View Full Version : Advice on starting school
clarez85 22-01-2009, 08:20 hi, my son is only 3 but when do u need to start thinking about applying for a school place? im guessing he'll be going sept 2010 as his birthdays in november.
i want to go and look round some as im not origionally from handsworh so dont know what the schools are like around here...does anyones children go to scool around handsworth/woodhouse and have a good recomendation.
thankyou!!
also hes at kidz@work nursery at moment so its not a feeder pre-school or anything
lubylou12 22-01-2009, 09:46 you need to apply asap hun, my son started nursery a few weeks ago and i had to apply then for big school but was told i should have done it ages ago, i out my girls name down when she was 1
I went to see the head of our local school who said we would receive a form for our local school in due course and we should submit it immediately, though it won't be until 6 months or so before they begin. She also said it wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference how early we put the girls names down for it, the forms distributed are the be all and end all.
Our girls are in the feeder nursery so they should be fine but for a highly subscribed village school it could be a case of last in first out for us.
So, I would say take some time to find out where you would like your child to go to school and ask to put their name down, then just sit back and wait until you get the official forms.
You don't need to put your childs name down at a the actual school you want them to attend unless they have their own admissions policy (which most schools don't anymore) You will receive notification when you need to register for school. I receive mine around November and he starts in September. You are able to choose 3 schools which you can do either by post or online.
You should get your forms around November 2009 and find out your chosen school March 2010.

If you want your child to go to St. Josephs then get his name down now. They are a nightmare to get into.
However, my eldest went to Athelstan and I didn't rate them at all so we moved her to Ballifield and I can't recommend them enough. It's a fantastic school, the nursery there is attached onto the school as well which is good for the little ones.
clarez85 22-01-2009, 14:19 oh thanks for replys, wheres ballifield?
It's on the same road as Handsworth Grange school. On the Ballifield estate. Across from the working mens club its the first on the right at the lights.
jellybellybean 22-01-2009, 16:27 I would reccomend going to have a look around the schools local to you. You may also want to consider moving your child to the feeder nursery (if the school has one) so that he gets to meet and form friendships with the children who's reception class he will be in.
Where abouts in Handsworth/Woodhouse do you live? Do you know which school is your catchment school?
clarez85 22-01-2009, 19:03 hi im just below asda roundabout....id guess catchment school would be athelston but iv heard bad reports from a few people. hes at pre-school now within his nursery
I paniced about applying for school for DD1, she starts this September and the Primary admissions sent out letters back in Oct, for us to go to our local school and collect application booklet/forms. think if she had been going to a school nursery then they would have given them out.
Had to fill in form with 3 chosen schools, I went to visit all the schools in area, read ofsted reports on net and finally decided on 3.
I had been to our 1st choice school and put her name down when we moved to area 2 years ago, but was told that it wouldn't make any difference as main application form was only way of applying for ANY state or church aided school. Also just because your child in the feeder nursery doesn't guarentee you a place in the school, it helps but no guarentees.
We find out at end of march which place she got.
jellybellybean 22-01-2009, 20:20 I know a few people who's children attend athelstan who are very happy there, but I suppose whatever school you choose there's always going to be people who's opinions differ. If I was you i'd probably go and look around athelstan and ballifield (these 2 are closest to you) and see what you think.
There's St Joseph's aswell on Handsworth top but with it being a catholic school i'm not sure how you go about applying and also the chance you'd have of your son being accepted (apologies here i'm just assuming your not catholic???)

I thought I'd got ages to go, but after looking at the link, I've realised I have to register my DD end of this year. Seems unreal, as she hasn't even started nursery yet and I've only just got my act together for that!
sumayyah 23-01-2009, 20:52 i got the notification in october as my child should apparently go to primary this september ( where did the time go ) ive still not filled it in thou as i had assumed she would stay where she is, shes in a nursery of a SN school

You still need to apply for a school place. Being in the nursery of a school doesn't mean you will get a place in reception. You must apply anyway. My sis in law made this mistake for her twins and left applying until the last minute and ended up having to send them to a different school than her 1st choice (where they'd attended nursery.)
sumayyah 24-01-2009, 14:55 shes in a special school i thought they had different rules?
if they make the choice to send her to another school im not sure where they will send her, the local primary im sure couldnt manage her

You only have until the 31st of January to get your application in, unfortunately being in the nursery joined to the primary school no longer means that you are gauranteed a place there. Get your form in quick or apply online
My son went to Brunswick primary school in woodhouse and my daughter is currently at the playschool there and will hopefully start school there some time next year

Oh sorry, I didn't realise she was in a special school. I don't know anything really about applying for special schools i'm afraid. I'd check with the office staff on Monday just incase. I'm sure you don't want to miss out on your first choice of school.
