It's terrible. My mum told me about it earlier. I've never dared to leave my dogs tied up outside shops as I'd never forgive myself if anything happened to them. The poor lady must be distraught, my sympathy goes out to her.

i work at wilkinsons at hillsborough, and the other week someone tied their dog up outside and it broke free, luckily for the owner it decided to come into the shop rather than go onto busy bradfield rd where it would have certainly caused an accident,we had to hold on to it and put a tanoy call out for the owner to come forward.

How sick

I hope the police take it seriously, first stop cruelty to animals, next stop humans. :(

"Police said her injuries were consistent with a high fall"

*Could* have been an accident while he was walking her.

(thats what I'm telling myself anyway :()

It's so awful, poor old lady she must be distraught. I would NEVER leave Evie outside a shop, I worry about her getting stolen.

This is one reason why I wouldn't leave Molly tied up outside anywhere. I couldn't deal with someone nicking her. There are security leads that you can buy if you need to tie them up somewhere and leave them- I remember Lotti telling me about them.

(Another reason I wouldn't leave her outside a shop is that she'd bark and howl for the entire time that I was in the shop, which everyone else around her may find rather hard to deal with!)

That's what I can't help wondering, too.

Before I will think the man was "evil," my mind goes to thinking perhaps he suffers from a mental illness, and had no bad intentions.

there was a day and age when we could leave our dogs outside shops in safety

I leave Brude sat under a stay command, and preferably where I can still see him

I leave D outside the shops if I'm just nipping in, it takes me about 5 mins to tie all the knots in the lead so he could not lunge at any passing dogs and he wears his muzzle too. I know it would take someone a while to untie all the knots, as it take me ages to undo him  He sits beautifully looking out for me to come back :)

They've arrested someone. Thankfully they do appear to be taking it seriously: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/7853483.stm

There is a collection for the elderly couple whose dog it was on another forum I visit in order for them to have a cremation and memorial for their dog, any excess money is going to an animal charity of their choice.

That's amazing news

I hope his capture gets more publicity than the original story too - in the hope it puts others off any stupid ideas of something similar

This is what worries me about the current reporting in the media on the subject of dogs - it stirs up enough malice for people to think it's okay to treat people's pets badly

My thoughts exactly! I've never left our dog tied up anywhere without me.
