View Full Version : Use of Morrisons carpark by tram users
For months I have been puzzled by the fact that whenever I shopped in Morrisons the shop was quite empty yet the car park was full.
Finally, I worked out that tram users were using the carpark and walking down to the Halfway tram terminus to avoid the Park and Ride charges.
This really peed me off, especially at Christmas when spending £????? and queing for an hour for a parking space before hand.
Seems that they have finally accepted that there is a problem and have installed some barriers at the entrances to the car park.
Are you one of those naughty people? Come on admit it. If you are it looks like you'll have to find somewhere else to park for free.
Any other places in Sheffield used for this purpose?
If the council want to get people to park and ride they should be providing free car parks for that purpose.
You can't really blame these people. I don't park there but I do look for cheap or free places to park. Its not really naughty either, unless there is actually a rule, anyway they might also shop there.
youwhatref 15-06-2005, 13:52 You'll get it around the Park & Rides, Nunnery Sq where they use the roads around Wybourn/Cricket Inn. Middlewood they use the local roads across from the Park & Ride and Halfway as you mentioned they try to use Morrisons or C Peaks.
If you look at the majority of the tram stops you'll find a large number of cars parked around the tram stop. They prefer to do thsi rather than paying at thae Park & Rides. Not worth it in my opinion for 50p, i'd prefer to pay it for the security.
Also a lot of the cars at Morrisons in Halfway are members of staff, who should only park around the outskirts of the carpark but never do!

Not naughty that people who are going to spend money in the shop can't find a parking space because of others who are parking for their own convenience, free of charge and not spending in store. Some people
Would you dream of just walking into a restaurant for a rest and a warm, without ordering, just because you had a meal there at some time in the past?

I don't mind paying if it's for something - like security
I bet Morrisons get less cars broken in to than the Park and Ride ;)

Wouldn't be so sure. Some unhelpful chap had a good go at levering the passenger-side door lock from my father's manky old wheels in the Morrisons car park just last week.
He's now getting it 'de-locked'. I swear he's a 53 y/o boy racer.
Ousetunes 15-06-2005, 14:13 Morrisons must be having a nationwide crackdown.
They've done a similar thing at their Acomb branch in York and left motorists who have left their cars there previously with absolutely nowhere else to park.
Unfortunately, if they own the land, then they can do what they like really.
No sympathy Ousetunes. Mr Strix gets the train.
If Morrison's have bought all that land to facilitate their customers spending money on their premises, you're damned lucky they aren't towing you off site in your absence.
Actually. Since Asda got bigger, they now have signs up limiting the use of their car park to (I think) 2 hours. How miffed would you be if you'd just spent 45 mins buying a digital camera (or something) and an hour and a half doing a monthly shop, only to come out and find a parking ticket (or clamp, or whatever)?
Ousetunes 15-06-2005, 14:33 Strix, just to be clear, I've never been to Morrisons in Acomb, York.
I'm referring to an article that recently appeared in The Yorkshire Evening Press. Naturally, this thread reminded me of that article.
I fully support the likes of supermarkets safeguarding parking spaces for their clients!
Sorry Ousetunes! I hadn't understood that from your firts post. I assumed you were disapproving of the situation ;)

Not at all Strix. Dont know about Morrisons figures but know the P&R figures
fox20thc 15-06-2005, 16:41 Well I saw someone in Tescos on infirmary road going around in uniform taking down numbers. I think they are imposing a maximum stay limit in the car park. If you are shopping you're not going to be parked there for 8 hours are you. Maybe they are going to start clamping them??
Don't drive so Its not an issue for me, apart from when Im stuck on a tram for 40 minutes from middlewood because of all the cars going into town.
Captain_Scarlet 15-06-2005, 18:16 pay park & ride or park for free ... tough choice
The signs in Tesco Infirmary Road car park have been up for while saying that there's a restricted waiting time. On my daily walk through there I always saw cars parked at the tram stop side of the car park all day. People will just use it as a park and ride until/if the owners get upset.
Same as the people parking in my road, but as I'm out all day I'm not fussed.
B & Q on Queens road is a nightmare on Sheffield United match days. I have told them inside and they know about it but don't seem to want to do anything . When I realised what was happening it was the end of the season, I have sent an e-mail to B & Q and complained about it, I hav'nt had a reply all we can do is wait until next season and see if they have altered things. Its got to be in their intrest to do something about it.
Fishpole 15-06-2005, 19:26 It'll be the same type that gets on the tram and reads or stares out the window to avoid paying too! So aside from the petrol to get there, it's practically a free journey!
My ISA is looking pretty good these days!
tom_a_west 16-06-2005, 02:21 birley lane tram stop which isnt that far away from halfway has a side road next to it that most of the people on my estate park on. there is also the same setup beside white lane tram stop.
alchemist 16-06-2005, 09:21 I sometimes meet the missus for a 6pm showing at the ugc in centertainment and while waiting for her tram to appear i have had the opportunity to see other trams come in and unload, its like watching a le mans start in the car park!! i reckon about 3 trams and the car park will be empty

Don't you think that if the only time you have to queue to get into and find a space in the morrisons car park is xmas, that it might actually be shoppers that are making it busy?
I've never had a problem parking in the morrisons car park, the only problem would be if you insist on parking with 40 m of the door.
I'll just add that we shop there once a fortnight, so i'm not exactly an infrequent visitor.

Which branch? I think Mo (who started this thread) was talking about Halfway.

I thought she's said Hillsborough.
My mistake, I just saw halfway and read hillsborough, duh.:gag:
Steerpike 16-06-2005, 10:54 What! I used this car park and don't shop at Morrisons I simply park up my car and go about my business, must I shop at a low budget supermarket to park in a public car park, it isn't an exclusive area. I will continue doing this!

It's not a 'public car park', it's Morrison's property
What ar eyou planning to do when they insall their new barriers?
Don_Kiddick 16-06-2005, 11:02 They do it outside ALDI on Meadowhall retail park too.
I stood waiting to be picked up there one morning & watched hundreds of suited professionals parking as close as possible to the supermarket then nipping round the back to the tram stop.
The first 4 rows very quickly filled up.
How selfish & inconsiderate on the shoppers who then have to park nearer to Pizza Hut & struggle with shopping, children etc!
jenhoppy 16-06-2005, 19:50 There is a bad problem similar to those mentioned in South Street that runs down the back of Parkhill Flats. My friend lives there and she can never get parked behind her flat till well after 7pm most nights, due to people who either walk to work in town or park up and jump on a train/tram to go to work. This is really annoying for the residents who have cars or visitors with cars.Match days are a nightmare too!So you dont get any spaces at the weekend when there is a match on.Hopefully when the redevelopment goes ahead they will think of integrating more car parks with a free permit to tenants scheme or something similar.
