View Full Version : Pele 3 - Wednesday 1
WalkleyRich 15-06-2005, 13:06 Anyone remember Santos playing The Owls at Hillsborough in 1971 or 1972. Pele played briefly, I only got a ticket because I was a pupil at Parkside Road, just next to the ground. This was, of course, before the School was surrounded by quite as much traffic as I saw on my last visit to Sheffield.
Ye decide not to go thought I would get chance to see him again but never did.
Highnote 15-06-2005, 14:56 I remember it too,am I right in thinking it should have played in the evening under floodlights, but was changed to the afternoon, the reason it sticks in my mind is because I did not go back to work in the afternoon!
Wednesday played Santos in the mid 1960's in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup I think.
Pele took a penalty and did a shuffle as he kicked it that was beyond belief beating Ron Springett who was no slouch in goal easily.
i remember how me and my dad felt sorry for Peles marker Peter Johnson who no matter how hard he tried couldn't get near him.

I was stood on the Kop watching that penalty, and as you say Ron Springett didn't know which way it was going.
Pele, alongside George Best are in my opinion the greatest footballers ever to have pulled on a pair of boots.

Intercities was what is now the UEFA cup. Santos was a friendly or a testimonial:heyhey:
Ps Still Rate ron Springett to be better than Gordon Banks
RiffRaff 16-06-2005, 21:16 The Brazilians were staying at the Grand Hotel at the time, and my dad happened to be staying at the same time.... Bless him, he managed to get me Pele's autograph...
Terrific..... until I later gave my autograph book to a lady who was a secretary at the Hillsborough ground. All I remember is that she was living at the Rutland Hotel on Glossop Road at the time, and took the book in order to get me the Wednesday squad signatures.....
Needless to say, I never saw it again....!
My dad had the match programe, signed by Pele, which is now in the hands of my brother...
I was at the match between Wednesday and Santos, I can't remember the exact year, something like 1970, it was a midweek afternoon kick-off and I managed to get out of work early to be there, I was a young apprentice turner at Guest & Chrimes in Rotherham at the time.
I've always been a big George Best fan but have to admit Pele surely is and was the greatest player ever.
I remember getting the day off school to see this match around 71. Can anyone remember Pele had a bandaged knee.
The friendly game against Santos was indeed played on a midweek afternoon (23 Feb 1972). This was due to a three day week being imposed by the then PM the late Edward Heath, mainly to save electricity. Seemed strange in a packed Hillsborough without the electronic scoreboard at the back of the old kop beaming down the score!
Call in at the Crown at Brightside. Bronco Layne ex Wednesday Centre Forward runs this pub and there are photos of him and pele on display.
It was an afternoon kick off due to the 3 day week. I think there were 45,000 there and was it 0-0? Tommy Craig has Pele's shirt. Knowing that Pele would be first off the pitch at the final whistle, he asked the ref to give him ( the original TC!) a nod just before he blew for full time. Craig moved over to near the tunnel and just waited for Pele to run into him! It was a friendly match, Santos did a mini-tour of the uk. It was also perhaps to do with the £100,000 they demanded in cash before kick off otherwise they wouldn't play. Hmmm.
My geography teacher at the time threatened me with the stick if I didn't turn up for school as he knew I was going. Walking down Penistone Road (hot pies inside!) guess who ran into me? Shame it wasn't the great man himself..... Tommy Craig...that is, it was my geography teacher. The only words he said were 'I'll say nothing if you say nothing'! Hope some of the above is right. Long Live the King!

Ive still got the Programme.
I was babysitting that evenong in the mid sixties for a Wednesday player called Billy Griffin who returned home after the match with Tony Kaye, Pete Swan AND Pele's shirt - which I was allowed to touch!!!!
canadablade 16-08-2005, 01:26 Even though i am a Blade i remember my Dad keeping me off school and taking me to that match..We sat in the Leppings Lane end and i remember Pele scoring a penalty..I thought the score was Santos 4 Pigs 2
Regards Canada Blade
Santos 4 Pigs 2???
I was at that match too and can assure you Santos were definitely NOT playing Sheffield United in that match.
They were playing Sheffield WEDNESDAY!! (the biggest supported team in Sheffield, the best ground Sheffield, the best manager in Sheffield (shortly to be proven) and the most successful winners of silverware in Sheffield.
PS,
A couple more defeats and you'll all be screaming for Warnock's head again ha ha ha.

Yes, and so did, I for many years! Ron was without doubt Wednesday's greatest post-war keeper. We shall never see his like again!!
Banks did however finally win my vote as the countries number one after two brillaint World Cups.
Peter had a lot to live up to and whilst not being in Ron's class, was still a superb keeper. He was also a loyal servant of and a credit to the City of Sheffield. His passing at such a young age was extremely sad.
I remember both Springett's with gratitude and affection.
standonowl 09-02-2006, 12:38 there seems to be several diffences of opinion with regard to the scoreline in the 1972 game. i went....bunked off school (I had a bad cold) and heard the next day that half the class was missing !!!!.....I seem to remember score being Owls 0 Santos 2 and yes ...Pele's leg was bandaged up...he obviously wasn't fit and only played so as not to let people down (and also probably the financial implications)
Standonowl,
I believe your memory serves you correctly regarding the score. As for 'bunking off' [don't you remember, we actually called truant, 'wagging it'?], for some mysterious reason even Blades like my good self had colds and chest infections that day. I recall the great Pele's 'gammy leg' too.
Santos wouldn't play at Bramall Lane. They realised that the footballing wizardry of Currie, Woodward et al would prove too much for them.
Yep, the score was definately 2-0. I vaguely remember my school (Hallam Junior) giving everyone the day/afternoon off probably because of the football, but the power cuts and three day week may have played a significant part in it as well.
caramac55 10-02-2006, 06:08 Yep, I was there too, if I remember correctly we were given the afternoon off school, they must have known that most kids would be off ill:suspect: for that match, ps, I may not live in sheffield anymore but I am still an avid supporter of the owls.

The £100.000 was their match fee, they wanted and got it in cash. Wasnt this the second time they played Santos?. Or maybe memory is running wild.
patchalan 10-02-2006, 18:45 I was lucky enough to go to both of the games, we had the afternoon off when we lost 4-2,i can remember ron smiling to himself after the Pele penalty, even he applauded
CHAIRBOY 10-02-2006, 19:59 Wednesday's first game against Santos was an evening in 1962, a friendly, and the Brazilians won 4-2. Coutinho scored three, Pele with the memorable penalty kick and the Owls replied through Griffin and Layne. Att. 49,058.

fire-fairy 22-01-2009, 13:13 my husband took some old movie film of pele playing at hillsborough in 1972
cameras were not allowed inthe ground but my husband managed to get into the ground with camera about one and a half minuets of play was recorded,
Mrs H Solo 22-01-2009, 13:29 I remember getting the day off school to see this match around 71. Can anyone remember Pele had a bandaged knee.
Yes - we all got the afternoon off school it was the first time I had been to Hillsborough - it was a fantastic opportunity to see a real life legend in Sheffield on a school day afternoon.
Gravydownshi 22-03-2009, 22:16 was it not on a Monday night/afternoon? I remember out boss saying anyone having time off to see the match would be disciplined...needles to say I went..
I have the programme here & it was on monday the 22nd october 1962 kick-off 7-15pm.wednesdays team was(in the programme)Springett,Johnson,Megson,Eustace,Swan,Ka y,Finney,Dobson,Layne,Fantham&holliday.
Sontos team was.
Gilmar,Olavo,Dalmo,Zito,Mauro,Calvet,Dorval,Lima,C outinho,Pele,Pepe.
Was at that match in 72, me & a friend went & dragged along our boyfriends at the time along with their mates. Can vividly remember them reminding us constantly what a huge favour they were doing us (they were mad United fans & it pained them going to Hillsborough) Young Love :hihi:
My Dad walked me down from Milnrow Road on the Cross to the 62 match and also to one against Stoke City around about the same time. He wanted me to be able to say I'd seen Pele and Matthews when I grew up. Its now 47 years later and I do indeed tell about it and can even show the programmes. And I'm still a season ticket holder even though I moved to the Scottish Borders two years ago - the matches mean I have two good reasons to visit Sheffield; Wednesday and my Dad who turned 89 this month.

After the '62 match I waited outside the players' entrance hoping to get autographs. Pele was last out (with a stunner clad all in white on his arm) and was the only one to sign autographs, though he only signed two. The first one was on a photograph in a folded newspaper and the lad waved it in triumph. The second was in my autograph book (or so I thought). Alas the biro had packed in and all I got was an impression in the soft cartridge paper of my little book!
Pele was a fantastic draw and my consolation was that I had earlier secured the signature of the late great Derek Dougan after pestering him for a couple of hundred yards down Penistone Road. He was playing for Villa at the time and it was only a couple of years after he had broken mine and thousands of Wednesdayites' hearts with his double for Blackburn in a semi at Maine Road. I remember he was resplendent in a terrific belted herringbone overcoat.
Great memories.

Billy Griffin wore blue leather winkle pickers to match his blue Italian suit (off the field before any of you wags have a go). I remember him getting somewhat agitated outside the players' entrance at Hillsborough when a rather forthright lady declared she would not pay him in brass buttons!
