No idea-they are so cruel. What do you need it for?

Please don't buy one of these horrendous objects. They're cruel, unnecessary and can cause more problems than they solve.

The Kennel Club has been campaigning to get them banned - this is why. (http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=1236)

they are illegal in this country for a start so you will not get one

if they're illegal, how come the RSPCA is campaigning to get them banned

Lisejacko - why do you think you need one of these things? They are like any other training aid - they need very careful supervision and instruction from a professional dog trainer or you could find you create more problems than you think you're solving

did you want the type which is activated when crossing an invisible perimeter or one that goes off when you push a button?

i always thought they was, and so they should be i dont know where they sell them in the uk and have never seen them for sale on the open market only abroad along with the spike collars that dig in the neck to control personally i think people that use themshould wear one thereselves

it depends on what they're going to be used for and how

I know a pub dog who wore one of the type triggered by stepping over a predefined perimeter. The previous landlord's dog had died on the nearby railway line

I know which I find more acceptable

Nobody's campaigning to remove electric fences from cattle fields are they?

You can get the collars which burst a shot of air out or a citronella smell. These are much more pet friendly.

says who?

citronella is supposed to be harmless, but it makes my skin burn and itch massively

Dogs' noses are incredibly sensitive. I'd rather give my beagle an electric shock than spray him in citronella :suspect:

Well then that would be your decision wouldnt it. In my opinion and from research they are 'better' than the electric shock ones.

I wonder how many people would fit one of these to their kids necks when they are misbehaving!... but on a dog its acceptable...

beam me up!

I personally believe that you don't need this kind of collar if you work on the original problem , I have been given bark collars in the past but have never used them just tried tostop Badger from Barking and that works for me.

But how long before it was classed as child cruelty ?

So many issues are man created, I believe there is no such thing as a bad dog only bad owners, and dealing with the behavioural problem dogs that come into rescue, I stand by that.

If you have to resort to inflicting pain on a dog to control it, it only creates fear, which most of the time causes aggression.

Fear aggression is the top most cause of cases we see within breeds.

Shock collars might be a deterent - short term, but if the trigger has not been addressed correctly, then the problem will remain.

Administering discomfort / pain is not the way forward to train a dog... far from it.

How many dogs are whacked with a newspaper? then a child walks in with a comic, the dog think he's going to get smacked, and goes on the attack..bites, and thats how its start, trigger set up.

Dog gets handed into rescue because its " Aggressive" *sigh

and dogs are handed into rescue because they are 'difficult' too

There are many ways to 'train' dogs, and there are many arguments against many of those methods

Like I said, I'll stay open minded

I don't condone running out and buying a shock collar without knowing EXACTLY what you're going to do with it, and have consulted an professional (and I don't mean the salesman) in its EFFECTIVE use, but there ARE instances where they have a place - as I mentioned above by specific example

some dogs are handed into to rescue as people arn't committed to them and can't deal with problem as they want an easy life!

You'll hear no argument from me there.. I have been doing it 20 years, and its getting worse for all rescues, just so very sad :(

Please don't buy a shock collar. Can't understand why anyone would. Nor would I ever recommend citronella.

Possibly a spray collar with water for really bad problems but I'd be wary of using those too.

You get far less reliable results with punishment than you do patience and positive reinforcement.

I believe e-collars were banned recently in Wales and hopefully the rest of the United Kingdom will follow suit soon.

There has been quite a lot of controversy over citronella in recent years. It has been banned as an ingredient in equine fly repellant because of it's carcinogenic properties. Quite surprising that citronella collars are still sold in that case isn't it?

where's the OP got to? :suspect:

Perhaps they got the answer or info they wanted to know, why a suspicious face?

The collars that blow out just air are really good. Not like a massive power shock, just a gentle blow so perhaps the OP could look into these :)

The suspicious face is probably because we get a fair few people registering new names and posting threads like these just to wind up the rest of the group...

Hmm...
