I am starting at Sheffiel Hallam Uni in September. I have looked around the uni and city but where are the supermarkets and clubs?

Is the construction management degree any good?

Will you be in halls or have yo picked somewhere to live?

Try www.yell.com for the supermarkets
Or if you have a postcode, www.upmysteet.co.uk will give you a wealth of info in your local area.

Sorry - can't fill you in on the clubs - I'm an ageing rocker :( (who should get out more)

To Vampy

i will be studying a 4 year degree in construction management. what are you going to study? i am going into hall for year one where will you be staying?

i love all kinds of music mostly r and b and dance when clubin. i like up to date clubs just somthing funky with a good vibe and fit lads. pubs wise when out for a big night somewhere with good music and a busy atmosphere.

Hey you two, I'm a third year student @ SHU (on placement atm).

Can't say I'm impressed with yet more students getting conned into moving in halls ! there really is nothing better than a house !

Clubs in Sheffield are pretty famous and easy to find, supermarket too.

Perhaps if you told WHERE you're living we can actually tell what you need as Sheffield beeing so big there is plenty of choice.

i have to say i disagree CS. imo in your 1st year theres nothing better than halls. A house for your 2nd year yes, but not the 1st. Being in halls lets you meet a wider rnge of people, which is what you want for your 1st year. Then when you know everyone you need to know, a house for the 2nd year makes sense.

Or you could just do what I did and get your own house off the council. I love it, have got my own space, can have people round when i want, and can have no one round when i want, and its much cheaper, for such a larger space to myself.

Definitely agree with this, get yourself into Uni halls of residence or the equivalent private sector halls.

I've just finished my first year (stayed in halls just around the corner from Leadmill Point).

As you might have guessed from the name, its just round the corner from the Leadmill but I don't think that'd really be your kinda club. Round the other corner (3 min walk) is GatecrasherOne - probably more your thing. In the way of pubs/bars West St and Division St are best (5 mins walk, 10 min crawl ;) ) There's a pub just across the road called the Royal Standars. They do quizzes and things, and do have some drinks offers, but its a pretty average pub really!

Hope that helps, PM me if you want to know more.

Great where are the nearest supermarkets/shops etc.??

sheff_minx
23-06-2005, 09:33
Waitrose is the biggest supermarket close by but its expensive. There's a Sainsbury's Central up on the Moor (5/10 mins walk), and other things like Somerfield on the main shopping street. Other than that, there's also a 24hr Spar and a Jackson's 2 mins walk in either direction.

Will you be bringing a car to uni? If so, there's a 24hr Asda and a big Morrisons on the Parkway (5 min drive).

Roz

ps. I envy you living in Leadmill Point - they look really stunning from the outside!

laa_86
23-06-2005, 13:13
i can't drive and even if i could i can't afford a car but suppose i could always get the bus or something. I can't wait to get to leadmill point its really nice but damn expensive just ove £3200 and i still don't know how much im getting off the LEA

sheff_minx
23-06-2005, 13:24
A few buses run right in front of Leadmill Point, but the main interchange is only like 2 mins away and buses go to all over the country from there!!

To live in Liberty Works this year has cost me a teeny fraction under £3000, and i only got £3070.43 from the LEA (I don't know how much difference the 43p made!!) PLUS had to pay my fees (£1100)

Nope the maths doesnt work out and I'm in a lot of debt because of it!! But I don't worry about it - there's plenty of jobs going and there will ALWAYS be someone in more debt than you ;) but seriously, you can get hardship loans from the uni if you're in serious trouble and I've found that the bank will do their best to help you out - they extended my overdraft for a month when I got into trouble at Christmas until I got my next loan through.

Just have fun :)

Feeling clueless is the fun part! Everyone who you're going to meet in halls will be just as clueless as you so you wont be alone, and looking for the supermarket together is like a team building excercise!

Takes me back to when I was starting at what was Sheffield Poly back then in September 1977 (oops, showing my age!) I remember the Leadmill - great discos on Sat nights. I lived in Ballard and Broomgrove Halls plus Norfolk Park Student Flats. I guess they're pretty ancient now... Good luck at Hallam Uni!

To all those starting in September and feeling clueless - don't worry! We've all been there, and give it a few days and you start to figure things out, a few weeks and you wonder how you were ever so scared and clueless!

Give it a year and you don't wanna go back home. I love Sheffield so much I've been here all summer and I've properly moved out of home... think my parents are feeling it and wish me back (why on earth?!) but Sheffield's just so great

I'm at Hallam in September, been itching to go back to uni for years...

It depends what you're looking for clubbing-wise. Sheffield has lots of generic run of the mill nights like any other city, but also has a few underground nights that cater for detroit/acid techno, house, rn'b, electronica, indie, metal etc.

Sheffield is really easy to get around, and it's actually fairly difficult to get lost.

I lived in nether edge in my first year ( I long time ago now!) It should take you about 30 mins to walk to uni or 10 mins on the bus (22).

It a bit of a pain to get to at night but you can get a bus to abbeydale road then walk into nether edge. I met tons of other students in the area and often the most fun I had was going drinking around their places.

The 3 pubs I used to go to in the area are the Broadfield (quite a young and loud pub) on abbeydale road. Brincliffe oaks (good for pub food) and the Byron, both are just down the road from the post office in nether edge.

Job wise you are quite limited in nether edge, but there is a tesco down abbeydale road or call centres in the town centre, for your bog standard student jobs.

Hope this helps!

Hello those who are moving into leadmill point. I used to live there in my first year at uni, it was nice, small room but everything else seemed fine. Gets very noisy at night when people start to come back from the clubs.

Oh by the way, the walls are very thin! so i wouldnt tick your flatmates off! if u get what i mean!

Very close to hallam uni 5 mins walk so very handy and a crawl away from The Leadmill which was very very very handy!

Hey, I'm doing English Studies, just going into my second year though now. I have a few of my first year books left if you want to get 'em cheap aswel!

If you want any info etc. just let me know but I had a brilliant time last year and managed to get a 2:1 without doing too much work... *ahem* but as a sensible older student this approach is not advised ;)

Kingdom on the Wednesday possibly (you can get them from the union and a few other bars in town).

The others don't really do tickets, you just queue! I think you can get tickets for Mondays and Thursdays at Gatecrasher but nobody I know has ever bothered! Events at the union don't do tickets.

(I might be wrong though so feel free to correct me)

does liberty works have the bar up and running downstairs yet? When they took over 3 years ago from another company they advertised a bar downstairs so i paid loads to live there cos of the bar (alcohol and makin new friends) Yet they never opened it sayin they got turned down 4a licence (or some feeble excuse)

Just be aware!

sheff_minx

No bar. And they aint guna get it up and running either because they can't get a license. They won't even open it up as a communal area, yet we got an absolute bollocking if we hung around in the courtyard :loopy:

I moved out of there in July. It was terrible - the staff treated us like absolute s***. And I got charged a stupid amount of money from my bond because one of my flatmates didn't rinse down the shower after I had moved out :loopy:

One of the English Lecturers has started training at Jiu Jitsu (at Sheffield Uni at the moment, but soon at Hallam hopefully). So i'd recommend joining the club to get browny points (and because it's great fun and we go out drinking lots).

Most of them are OK, but there are one or two who should be sectioned for being totally insane!!

I've sold off all of my first year books now, but a little hint for you - you don't need to buy Chris Hopkins' book in semester 1, or any of the language books in semester 2 (except for The Frameworks of English by Kim Ballard). Chris Hopkins is a tutor on the course and must make a mint in royalties from that book. he'll tell you to read a chapter or so of it a week but it is pointless, difficult to read, and nobody I know ever touched it!!

My tips would be to read what you can, but don't fret if you don't understand it or if you really don't have time - there are loads of resources on the net which go through the books chapter by chapter and explain what's going on. Not that I am condoning slacking off or anything... Just have fun - that's what the first year is there for!
