Hi, does anyone have any information on what's going on there because I read in the Sheffield Telegraph that there was a proposal for developing the site. Also, how would I get more information on it?

Well you could have searched this forum before you posted, but anyway how about :
- Contacting the Telegraph to enquire about their sources,
- Contacting the council or visting their web site to see if there is any info there
- Going to the Central Library and seeing what you can find out there.

Sheesh - what do they teach you on these Journalism courses?

I'd like to know too, living in that area.

Searching the forums doesn't give any information on what's happening there, nor does the council website, so don't know how that's going to help.

I heard that the land is owned by the NHS who were going to build a large hospital there. They ended up building the Hallamshire because it was nearer to the more affluant areas (so i'm told) so the whole plan was canned. Apparantly they still own it but no plans for another hospital so it'll be like this for a very long time.

Nearly right Imposter.

Back in the 70's Sheffield Health Authority was divided into three districts, North, Central & South.

The original plan was that each district would have its own big hospital, Northern General, Hallamshire & Norton.

However because the money was allocated on a population basis, central district had loads of services to run, many which served all the city (Jessops, Weston Park, Charles Clifford, Childrens) but relatively little money.

Hence central district was abolished ie swallowed up by southern district and the Hallamshire became the "district general hospital" for central and south Sheffield and plans for Norton shelved.

Searching the council website gives this:

http://libplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/planning/details.asp?Id=7827

A planning application for housing, hotel & business use.

As I live near this site, I went to visit the planning office earlier this year to view the plans for this development. It showed proposals for new houses, hotel and business units. Ive since heard rumours that any proposed building work has been put on hold, but dont know why, or if its true.

Like most things in Sheffield - its all hot air council drivel.

One or two things do actually happen and its usually NOT down to the council... like the Millennium Galleries etc - which only happened after the Sheffield Galleries were privatised.

The council likes to take credit. But the things they take credit for are actually nothing to do with them!!!

They are good at spending money on the odd presentation and that's about it.

Useless egotistic idiots.

I'll change my mind if the architects, developers and contractors can be convinced to work for Sheffield... there's a long way to go 'till that happens.

Hey Craig,

Would you be able to get hold of past visitor numbers or any sort of statistics from your Aunt about the now closed Norton Aerodrome site? It would be a great help to me, thanks in advance!

i have lived near the aerodrome for 15 years, a few years ago i got a knock n the door at 4-45am from the boys in blue asking if i knew where my car was, yes officer it is outside, no it's not he replied it is on the aerodrome, don't worry he says ou can go and get it, it is drivable, he actualy wanted me to walk about half a mile up the road at that time in the morning on my own to get my car i left it til 9am when my dad came with me, it was not drivable as they had broken all the electrics and tried to set fire to it, i think quite a few cars have been dumped on there when the stupid joyriders have finshd having there little bit of fun

Don't really get what you're on about.

Most things in Sheffield are developed by the private sector. The councils (statutory) responsibility is for planning. One can't exist without the other - it's called working in partnership.

My understanding on the site is this:
I thinks It's owned by the heritage trust (Don't quote me on that), they had plans to build affordable housing for priority workers such as nurses and teachers (One of Prescott's ideas from a few years back) but the environment agency have blocked this as the land is in the green belt area.... Even though planning was approved, and there are footprints of original building still there from the old site (Giving it brown field status). This makes it a brown field site in a green belt area and ending up in a situation where one government organisation is fighting against another. I gather you can't build on greenbelt until all available brown field sites have been used up but as this brown field is in a greenbelt it seems to be a stalemate.

Correct The Land Is Owned By English Parnerships This Is Definate Absoluty No Rubbish Without A Shadow Of A Doubt.

It Was Passed To Them From The Nhs . There Is A Debate / Consultation Regarding What Will Happen To Site However Owing To Planning Legislation It Is Believed That Any Buildings That Go On The Site Can Only Be The Same Size As Those Already On The Site .

Note : For Those Of You Who Are A Bit Out Of Date The Whole Of The Site Is In Sheffield It Is Not In Derbyshire (the Little Bit That Was Was Transfered In 1968)

The Above Information Comes From Attending A Number Of Meetings Where This As Been Discussed - Beware There Are Several Groups/ People Who Are Pedling Out Of Date Of Missleading Information .

It strikes me that this would be an ideal site for St Lukes Hospice to move on to. There is already a small hospital on part of the site and planning for this type of development would not be as controversial as required for housing.
Why dig up our public parks in the iterest of St Lukes when sites like Lightwood are available. IF THERE IS THE WILL TO USE THEM.
