View Full Version : Tilly's At The Vets :(

Tilly came in Sunday morning, hopping about on 3 legs.....her front left paw held up and she was (by the looks of it) in some pain.

On closer inspection - it looked like she'd got the claw of another cat stuck in her leg (well wrist if you want to be technical ;) ) - I did my best (after consulting Medusa) to try and sort out what the problem was but Tilly being Tilly......she decided to rearrange my right arm - I've got pretty scratch and bite patterns all over my wrist :hihi:

Yesterday she seemed a lot better, running around like a lunatic although the "foreign body" was still there - then last night she was doing the tripod routine of 3 leg standing and meowing to go out.

This morning I managed to get her into the vets in Eckington - he did his best to have a look at it but she wouldn't keep still and he said it might be penetrating the joint....so she's off to their surgery at Bolsover to be sedated, x-rayed, have whatever needs doing.....I'm just off to rob a bank to pay the vets bills - what do they do...pick a number and multiply it by "daft"?

No seriously - it's going to cost a lot of money - but I'd give my last penny for my Tilly - I'm going to get cat insurance from now on, monthly payments hit a lot less hard than an (estimated £160 bill!)

I'll keep you all informed - I'm keeping my fingers crossed, Tilly's keeping her paws crossed!

Sending you plasters and both of you a hug Mick.

Let's hope she's back to top form and out of pain soon (and that you heal without too much scarring!).

Big hugs to you both!! :) :) :)

Well thanks to all of you for your messages of concern and support :)

I've just been on to the vets (because I've been pacing about like a lunatic since I got back home)......apparently she doesn't have any foreign body in her front leg (wrist area)....it is a bite with an abscess.....even the vet double checked things because he was convinced she'd got a claw in there.....

Anyway, she's come round from the sedation - she's in a bad mood (took a lunge at the vet nurse!) and she's ok to be picked up at 4.30pm. She's apparently sleeping.

On my "injuries" - I'm off to the doctors for a jab (just to be on the safe side) hopefully he'll think the bites are healing up ok....I seriously don't like stiches or owt like that!

Tilly will be staying indoors for a few days - that'll annoy her....but until she's fighting fit, she's grounded! :hihi:

We may have to look at her changing her outside times.....she sleeps a good bit of the day and goes out at night....it's what she likes to do....but I know most cat fights take place at night......I'll scratch my beard and ponder this one!

Anyway, she's ok.....I can't wait to give her a snuggle and a scruffle - I've decided not to ram raid the bank....they've not got any chuffing money anyway! :hihi: - I'll just have to dip into the rainy day fund.

I know this is shutting the cat flap after the cat has scarpered.....but I've just signed up for Tesco Pet Insurance - £4.50 a month - if you've got a cat/dog and you've not got insurance......go and have a look.....£4.50 a month is a lot easier to swallow than the £160 they're screwing me for today!

The main thing is my baby is alright - she's sending meows and purrs (and a maaaaang for Vaz & Ripley) to everyone who's asked about her. Before anyone says it....yeah - I'm mad :loopy: - well mad about Tilly

Poor old Tilly! Living in our house, you get used to being constantly covered in scratches. It was a lot worse with the previous batch of seven kittens, who took pleasure in running up my legs together!

Only been bitten once though and not badly (just more scratches!), worth getting antibiotics if the bites are deep or you will end up with abcesses or the like - ask Olliekitten!

Glad to hear that she is ok now :). I had to pay nearly £500 in vets bills for one of my cats and he wasn't insured , and almost £2000 for one of my dogs but luckily then I was insured! It's worth getting insurance if you can afford it, even if it is just a cheap one, at least then it will go someway towards covering the costs.

I wish you luck when you have to bathe the abscess! You might find it less painful if you wrap her before you try.

Luckily, last time I got a bite (from dog), he managed to do it a few days before my tetanus jab ran out.

Glad to hear she's fine - it's always such a worry when you have to abandon them at the vets. I'm usually sitting with phone, finger poised, for at least 15 minutes before the time they say I can call them.

Well Tilly got home about 4.45pm - she was still very drowsy when I got there but started going crackers when she heard my voice (so she missed me almost as much as I missed her).

I got her home, she had a wobble around the place re-affirming that everything belonged to her, walking groggily from room to room, purring and trying to keep herself awake....then she went to the cupboard where I keep her pouch food and she started rubbing against the door....her appetite gladly hasn't gone away.

She had a few hours sleep (she stole my office chair and I've been sat on a painful spare chair I've got.....yeah I know she's spoilt ) - she then had a bit more food and now she's back on the office chair asleep. Tomorrow the fun starts with her medication (one is a syringe based thingy that can be mixed with her food, the other is tablets....so we'll see if she's going to take them without having a mardy :hihi:)

I nipped to the doctors, got a jab and some anti biotics and he checked the bite that'd tore the soft part of my hand....he said it should be ok - but I'm to keep an eye on it.

Lastly I just wanted to say thank you to you guys....Tilly's not just my pet cat, she's a friend, a companion and I hate to see her in pain. Your words on here and the messages by PM have been lovely.....and the reassurance on the phone Medusa gave me was brilliant.

Many people say Tilly is very lucky to have me as an owner - I disagree.....I'm lucky to have her - she's my amazing bundle of hyperactive fur and I love her to bits

I bet you were at Eckington vets when my daughter was there with her dog . £500 for scans xrays tablets etc. Now shes been told its got stage 4 Lymphoma (same as her husband) they are now both on steroids and chemo. How that for bad luck, I cant believe it. The chemo for dog will cost another £500.But as hard up as they are shes worth it...and I shall help them with it

You still manage to raise a chuckle, telling a bad luck story, Dynamick. You really should write a book! :)

I'm glad you're both OK, despite being sorely out of pocket too. Best of luck with the pills!

I second that - and hope Mick has some strong, leather gauntlets at the ready.

Alternatively, Mick, have you checked whether the pills have to be given whole or if you could crush them and put them in some food? When one of my cats had thyroid problems, I had terrible problems giving him the pills - not so much that he scratched and bit, but more that he just got so damned distressed about the whole thing.

I asked the vet and he said I could crush them and put them in his food. I got a pill crusher from Holland and Barratt and put the crushed pill in just a tiny bit of gravy from his cat food and it went down a treat.

Mick's seen me get a big worming pill down Tilly's throat without getting savaged (so he knows that it can be done) but unfortunately Tilly has a brain and knows that Mick is fair game for being shredded in the line of duty!

Cats know who they can try it on with and who is going to give them the pill no matter how hard they struggle so they may as well just let them get on with it ;)

I managed to get chatting with the vet nurse yesterday (she was sporting a little plaster on her arm courtesy of Tilly......she said "we've got a cat at the main practice - is an absolute sod with tablets.....stick it inside a bit of dairylea or other cheese - she'll take it straight away....."

Well I did gave her the syringe medication (which goes into her food if needed...apparently it tastes of honey!).....and the tablet she wasn't going to play ball - so I cut a bit of a dairlea triangle - stuck the tablet inside and smoothed the cheese over it......IT WORKED

Oh and Tilly is in great form today - she wanted to go out last night - meowing her head off all night..... - she's staying in today....and if she's ok tomorrow we're going to try her going out in the daytime instead of night (see if that stops her picking fights!)

She's just had a nice plate of felix pouch food (it's on offer at morrisons and it smells nice actually!).....she's purring as usual!

She's happy....I'm happy.....which is nice :)

I haven't heard of the cheese solution before, I'll bear it in mind for the next time George needs tablets.

So glad she's doing well and I hope your wounds are healing, too!

Oh Tilly is doing great - currently asleep on top of the wardrobe inside my sports bag (she's got a thing about rucksacks and sportsbags....she prefers them over cat beds and sheepskins!).....

I had a good look at her wound earlier - it looks nice and clean and she's not hobbling - infact she's running around like a silly sod as usual - it is quite a hole in her leg though - I think the culprit is a big white cat called Boris....he and Tilly have been seen together by a neighbour - she'll scrap with any cat and doesn't take any notice of size.

I've started letting her out more in the day and keeping her in during the night (she's meowing to go out...but after a while she gets bored and snuggles down at the side of me on the bed.)

She's taking her tablets, she's eating as much as she usually does....and she's getting spoilt even more than usual.

My wounds are ok - I do tend to heal up fast, the jab at the doctors was a pain in the arse....literally! :hihi:

Thanks for asking after her and me - all the messages have been lovely to read over the last few days - I know there are a lot of people who love animals on here - and I know Tilly has a legacy with her kittens....she's one amazing cat :)

Just been reading your thread and was about to suggest this as it works for our cat who is also called Tilly (that's what made me have a look at your thread!). You can also try hiding them in a bit of cheddar (leave it out of the fridge for a while so it gets pliable and the smell gets stronger, then push the tablet in!). I was wondering what your Tilly looked like - ours is black and white and wandered into our lives as a stray - and have just looked at your photos. She is a *gorgeous* cat, no wonder you love her so much!
