View Full Version : Jamie Ward Signs!
blades74 19-01-2009, 10:41 Just heard Jamie Ward from Chesterfield has been signed by the Blades.
Anybody here who can shed some light on the player?
Think we still need a midfielder and another big guy for up front?!
nah- its a rumour but blackwell won;t sign him- hes not even as good as sharp.
Stockers 19-01-2009, 11:43 nah- its a rumour but blackwell won;t sign him- hes not even as good as sharp.
Its been confirmed on radio Sheffield apparently, we're in the process of agreeing terms with him now.
At 5'0 tall (sorry, short), a player with pace who scores the odd goal....not too excited myself and i don't think he'll offer us anything either Sharp or Webber can't.

The odd goal? Hasn't he got 16 already this season?

Look what league there in:huh:
bladebloke 19-01-2009, 13:01 not overjoyed myself. but let the lad put a shirt on before you start slagging him. brian deane came from doncaster rovers reserves.
hope he does'nt read this forum he'll be on a downer in confidence straight away.
Look what league there in:huh:
Its still more than the odd goal, which was my point.
If you are not willing to look at quality in lower leagues then you will be waiting a long time for signings because we haven't got the money to pay premier league wages.

Well ay but in a lower league, Billy Sharp

Not going to judge him before he's play in the championship, but Billy Sharpe scored 30+ in the lower league didnt he?
But hope he does well for us if we sign him.
NEKRO138 19-01-2009, 13:35 He's scored two more goals than Grant Holt this season. Oh dear.

alex3659 19-01-2009, 14:27 if ward turned a move down to barnsley he must have confidence in his own ability .
try to stay on thread lads , it's a good un.
Stockers 19-01-2009, 14:33 balckwells getting desperate now -hardly ambitious is it
Seen much or Ward recently have you? :loopy:
SteveBlade 19-01-2009, 14:48 Well id be happy if we sign him, he'll come fired up and wanting to play for us, and who knows he could be a gem. Yeah its a risk but its better than signing has beens..... for 2,3 mil who dont perform.
alex3659 19-01-2009, 14:49 Seen much or Ward recently have you? :loopy:
he's been here 45 mins and destroyed the thread , no input whatsoever .
try again , what do you all think about ward , anyone know anything .

going from Beattie to league 2 striker seems to be a backward step -thats the point
SteveBlade 19-01-2009, 14:55 going from Beattie to league 2 striker seems to be a backward step -thats the point
When Beattie left everyone was going crazy, thinking that we wouldnt manage to score with Hendo, Webber and Billy and people wanted us to sign an amazing striker to replace him.... Weve played a few games since Beatties gone now and weve been decent, weve been scoring goals and been playing better football, so the need for an amazing striker doesnt seem much of an issue anymore, but we do need another striker as we are quite short up front - wala, Jamie Ward

I think its going to be very tough to bring in a direct replacement for BT, he's worth £3m and earns £40k a week, no one is expecting BT's replacement to be drafted in.

well you went for Lita ,just seems a bit of a come down from him
NERVY-OWL 19-01-2009, 15:53 you never know he could turn out ok but i'm thinking he'll turn out to be another sharp. apparently qpr have bid £1.3 for lita, if he goes there i'd be seriously wondering why he would turn utd down over them
SteveBlade 19-01-2009, 15:55 He stated that he wanted to stay down south, some players are like that i suppose :P

QPR are a rich club and probably offer bigger wages and london is a bigger attraction .
leviathan13 19-01-2009, 15:59 As has been said before, give the lad a chance.
Jesus! It's hard being a Blade sometimes, we all know that, but have a bit of optimism:
There's a week and a half to go in the transfer window
We lost our top goalscorer, yet don't really seem to be missing him - which I didn't think we would anyway
Granted, I don't know anything about Ward, but having a go at him before he even kicks a ball for us isn't going to help. No matter which league or team a player comes from, once they pull that shirt on they're a Blade and should be supported at the start. I agree that Sharpe hasn't pulled any trees up since coming back, but he's still managed to win us a game or two which, if he hadn't been on the pitch, there's no guarantee we would have won
We've not been playing amazing football, and it's been a grind at times, yet we're still in the top four of one of the toughest divisions around
So yes, to some, buying Ward is not "ambitious" and some will see it as a backwards step; but until he's kicked a ball for us, we know nothing about what he will do for us. Plenty of Prem teams have looked to the lower leagues - Nugent, Walcott, even our own Kyle Naughton is the interest of a few Prem teams, and look at the academy player that Chelsea bought for £1m - as it's not always about what the player can do now, but what they can do with a little coaching at the higher levels. This kid is still fairly young, and might be the bit of enthusiasm and youth we need up front to add to the experience we already have there.
Rocklegend 19-01-2009, 16:00 Some of the goals Ward has got this season were pretty good goals-from outside the box.Whether they were against crap opposition or not they were still good finishes.IIRC a lot of Billy's goals for Scunthorpe were tap ins and poachers goals.Ward looks a different proposition.
NERVY-OWL 19-01-2009, 16:02 you could say doyle was signed from a lower league, look at him:thumbsup:
the lads got loads of pace which as been sadly missing for united for while 1 running 1 nodding =goals goals goals

1 confused:confused::confused:
NERVY-OWL 19-01-2009, 17:14 no guarantees a proven player will get the goals anyway. big gamble by blackwell though, if the goals dry up the fans will go mad at him for signing an un proven striker. obviously if ward does get the goals to get you promoted blackwell will be hailed a genious. if he can get some in the championship i still cant see hoim doing it in prem though, so utd will need to invest in the summer, if they go up of course
Its still more than the odd goal, which was my point.

Some fans think we are in competition with Man City for players and make critical comments without seeing a player the guy is going cheaper because he is out of contract in the summer, he is worth a punt.

330k not bad!
Decent signing imo!
:confused::confused:
I hope it is not a permanent condition?
NERVY-OWL 19-01-2009, 17:26 only time will tell. at least he is a young player but lower league players are obviously a gamble.
nikki-red 19-01-2009, 17:34 Weve bought him as a development player for the future not to replace anyone or necessarily to go straight into 1st team.£330k 3 and a half year contract.
Robbie Loving 19-01-2009, 17:38 We will see how this signing goes, he's a blade now so I will behind him
I actually think this is a decent signing for the money. I hope he can make the step up and that he is given a chance.
I think it's a massive gamble he's only scored 29 goals in two years at Chesterfield.
There's a massive, massive gap between the Championship and League Two.
At his three previous clubs he only scored 10 goals which includes 9 goals in one season at Torquay United.
I would have thought that Blackwell would have looked further afield what about Uniteds contacts in South America etc.
Looks like a panic buy to me?

he tried to tempt Pele ,but realised he would be playing with players older thasn him-ie Speed and Ugo

Thats one way to spin his goals... but another way to look at it is that he has scored 39 goals in 100 games which is not a bad return at all, especially as he has been playing some of those games in midfield. He is also only 22 and I doubt that he was bought to go stright into the first team, so hardly a panic buy.

why is 330,000 a massive gamble. he's a gamble yes but so are 90% of players. we'll give him a go see if it pays off and if not sell him back to the lower leagues or you for round about the same price in a couple of years. cant see any panic there.
bladebloke 19-01-2009, 18:02 1 confused:confused::confused:

we dont want your cast offs -you normally sign the ones we release:D

A bit misleading as at these three clubs he played no games at Villa and only 9 games at stockport scoring one goal and got 9 goals in his season at Torquay.
bladebloke 19-01-2009, 18:06 When Beattie left everyone was going crazy,
not everyone steve. i said the other strikers will now get a chance as central striker's not playing wide to set beattie up. big ball up to beattie was getting tedious and predictable.

To be fair, though, I bet Laws wishes he had £330,000 to spend.
Weve bought him as a development player for the future not to replace anyone or to go straight into 1st team.£330k 3 and a half year contract.
You're joking he was Chesterfield's first choice!
Barnsley offerd 400,000 which was accepted but they couldn't agree personal terms.
He promised to score 20 goals this season for Chesterfield and has scored 12 so far.
He's not signed for United to sit on the bench or make up the numbers as a squad player.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/chesterfield/7584182.stm
He refused to sign a new contract in December so it was inevitable he would leave.

It is a gamble but we'll have to listen to what Blackwell has to say.
I'm not even going to respond to that last bit.

well now your saying what i've said. a gamble yes but not a massive one. and certainly not a panic buy.

he'll do as he's told. end of.
there you go its nailed on he'll score at bdbl

swervin going for charlton tkts friday. drop me your season tkt and readies in pal.
Seems a good signing at a good price for United - most likely to provide a challenge to Danny and Billy for the place alongside Hendo, and if he does well enough to nail down that place, then great. We've been in desperate need of pace up front for a while (although Webber is returning to better form), so it's a worthwhile gamble.
Much better than blowing £2m on some Premier reject who's just after another payday and is in the comfort zone, we need hungry and ambitious players. At least he won't have the pressure of a high fee hanging over him (like Sharp has).
I assume he'll already be cup-tied, so probably be on the bench against Donny, with the chance to come on and make an impact late on...
alex3659 19-01-2009, 22:37 I wonder if ward is cup tied .
The Manager 19-01-2009, 23:36 Ward or Beattie who would blades like more ?:hihi:
Ive a feeling blades wheels are going to fall off towards the ends of the season :P:P

even if they make the play offs -one out of ,reading ,wolves or birmingham will also be in the playoffs and the blunts are not in their league
blades74 20-01-2009, 06:01 Neither are midweek!
Would rather be where we are wouldn't you?
even if they make the play offs -one out of ,reading ,wolves or birmingham will also be in the playoffs and the blunts are not in their league
Would this be the birmingham who were very lucky to score a last minute goal to win against us or the wolves side who's manager admitted after the game against them that we deserved to win?
If this kid has pace then he will be a welcome addition to the squad- id throw him in against charlton on saturday :D
blades74 20-01-2009, 11:31 If this kid has pace then he will be a welcome addition to the squad- id throw him in against charlton on saturday :D

good question- might have a look.

I'd prefer to have Beattie at Stoke, Ward learning the trade of the Championship by being a bit of a fringe player for a while and leaving the striker positions to Henderson and Webber at the moment.
Stockers 20-01-2009, 11:39 even if they make the play offs -one out of ,reading ,wolves or birmingham will also be in the playoffs and the blunts are not in their league
I've got a feeling Reading (who looked head and shoulders above anyone else in this league at the Lane) and Brum will go up.
Wolves i feel with slip away....the play offs are a lottery but you've gotta be in it to win it.
At least we have some wheels to fall off
Billy B

He's definately Cup tied.
