I have just been on a web site and I saw a picture I fancied capturing....after I right clicked a dialogue box opened and said 'delete drive C' click OK...

I closed the box....:suspect:

Could this be a sick joke - or could it have wiped my C drive....if I'd clicked ok:help:

Gosh - you do have to be careful !!
Has anyone else encountered this???

If it had really been nasty it would have gone right ahead no matter where you clicked ;)

Well I closed the box using control + W then deleted all cookies and temp internet files then I ran my AVG virus software then I rebooted and all seemed ok....phew!!

I certainly woke me up though...if my kids had done it I know they would've just clicked 'ok' !

I don't back my computer up - I mean how to you get 43GB of info on 700mb discs???

Has anyone else encountered this??? It's more likely to be a custom right clic script.

everytime you right clic a box with the message the web site creator appears..

I have that on mine, but it don't say 'Delete C drive' it says 'no right clic, copyright blah blah' and is the most anoying thing I've managed to find to add on my site :D :D

I think it's rather cute - after all, you were trying to steal someone's copyrighted material!

:)

Treat yourself to a second hard drive. About £50 for 120Gb.

It'd be a fake, windows cannot format c when in operation, so you'd have got an error and it would have stopped there.

If it was a delete *.* and not format c, then that could be different. However highly unlikely to be possible.

95% its a hoax.

But they're oh so easy to get around. I haven't found one site yet that has the js to pop up an error message, that pops it up on FireFox without actually allowing you to then choose 'save image as'.

Even in IE you just hold the left button down and right click and the box disappears... :-"

I find that 'Alt' + 'Prt Sc' usually does the trick. Okay, so you need to crop the rubbish off the sides, but it works without too much trouble

There's a lovely screensaver that can be installed on a "friends"* pc so that it looks like their PC is going through a reformat in DOS mode... Think it's on systeminternals.com or some such..

... but I digress... such a pop up shouldn't be able to reformat your hard drive BUT I wouldn't put it past the point where someone could code something for an exploit that would schedule something like that. Nothing like that exists at the moment though and it's not exactly productive... Stealing your ID, cc numbers, etc.. is a much better use of such crackers skills... :suspect:

Overall, best to ask.. :)

There's also a lovely BSOD screensaver too - :D

:)

P.S: In a rather productive lesson, some of us managed to wind a teacher up, by doing a screenshot of the desktop, having the start bar hidden and had the screenshot as the desktop - we had her stumped for ages; so much so, she had to ring the techie who saw through it as soon as he walked in. :hihi:
