I'm fascinated by symbolism, and especially the use of "sacred" and ancient symbolism in modern times. I've been aware of several symbols being used on corporate and government/authority logos more than others and wondered if designers are taught that certain symbols are more effective to use.
The 5 pointed star has to be one of the most commonly recognised symbols. It is used on nation flags, corporate logos, on the emblems of government and authority etc.
What is so special about the 5 pointed star? Are you taught about this in design school? Why is it used so much? Is it used for superstitious reasons?
Another symbol I've noticed being used a lot is the "swish" that mimics the letter S, more commonly 3 swishes.
Another is the symbol of the sun, especially the sun rise. This is used on many corporate and government logos. In fact, the symbol of the sun's glory and the worshipping of light is used in nearly every advert I see on TV. Even Obama had the sunrise on his campaign emblem (although this is a common mythical symbol of revolutionaries - a "new dawn" etc.)
For the symbols we see are clearly more commonly used than others, is there any particular reason behind this selection? Do certain symbols have more of an effect on the subconscious mind?
