In the end I took him to the Walnut Club - which I know has had mixed reviews on here. BUT.... it was fab. perfect in fact. Yes I know the decor is somewhat erm pretentious, but the food was decent and the waiter was very friendly and overall it was quiet, discrete and yummy. AND open!
