View Full Version : What are the Road Markings for?

I've seen road markings around various areas of Sheffield recently. These look like some kind of measurements chalked onto the roadside. I've seen them on Penistone road, Abbeydale road and a few other areas. Does anyone know what the intentions are behind these?

I think I saw some of these on Crookes Valley Road. They marked off about every 10 metres / yards. (It was 10 paces anyway!)

They've just fitted new street lamps down there, so maybe it's something to do with that...

Chopper VASCAR marks.

In other words they are for helecopters and portable VASCAR speed cameras.

And

Basically just a cop with a video camera and a stopwatch, either on foot or in a helicopter.

Sometimes when new tarmac is coming to mend holes, the Highways engineer sprays about with yellow paint to show where the patches should go.

Might that be it?

Seen quite a few of those around and about recelty so they could be those..

Fairly sure they are not VASCAR related, but I could be wrong..

If the markings are various colours they're to indicate the position underground of pipes and cables belonging to gas, electric, BT and water etc., and usually indicate a pending excavation by one of these services.

Isn't there a large sewer upgrade scheme about to start ?...lots of traffic disruption for a long time to come.

In that case Abbeydale Road should resemble the yellow brick road. It is a disgrace.

I lost 3 spokes and buckled a wheel when I hit a pothole (unavoidable because of overtaking traffic) on Wednesday. I'm going to try and get the money off the council for a new wheelset as I don't see why I should be out of pocket because they have failed in their duty to maintain the roads. It's lucky I managed to stay on the bike and not fall in front of a car!

Ahh... I feel better after that little rant!

The AA said that we are supposed to be customers of the highways agency, but we are made to feel like victims. Hardly surprising when less than 2% of all road tax revenue actually gets ploughed back into the roads.

Yes, and this has been made far worse by local authorities slashing highway maintenance budgets to pay for overspends in departments such as social services and education.

What's even worse is that these short-term accounting practices ultimately costs us much more. The deferring of road re-construction until a point beyond its planned life, i.e. when it starts to fail, often means the re-construction can cost nine times more. source (http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm200001/cmselect/cmenvtra/381/381m16.htm)

Zamo, I think that there is a regulation that allows something like 10mm of vertical in a pothole or road surface. Might be worth checking out - I have loads of sympathy on the bad roads.
