Yeah, should a good gig and I'm sure they'll feel compelled to give that little bit extra after last time.

Were you there when they cancelled the last one?

im going too - was there when they cancelled last time - was pretty gutted as the rescheduled gig was when i was supposed to be on holiday.
After hearing the 4 acoustic tracks I decided I just had to change my holiday to make sure I do see them so that was what I did!

We're going too! The first lot sold out so quickly so I was made up to get a second chance. Got the tickets off someone who couldn't make the new date.

What did you think then? Nightswimming was always going to be the highlight!

Though could you hear that bloke shouting obscenities between every song regarding the last gig being cancelled? There's a word for people like him....

Great gig - loved Rockville & Nightswimming - I think they made up for the cancelled show in my book!

Yeah, excellent gig. They really gave it 100%!

Was a great set, with a really nice collection of their best tunes.

I thought they might do something like that, a lot of their other recent gigs have featured a lot more from their new album, but I think they felt they owed us one after last time.

I was there and thought it rocked quite frankly! Loved them kicking off with the Monster tunes really got it going right from the start. Also mas chuffed that they played stuff from 'New Adventures'. In case you're interested the set list went something like this:

I took your name
Whatīs the frequency, Kenneth ?
Animal
The one I love
The Outsider
Drive
Leave
Bad Day
Me in Honey
Everybody hurts
Electron Blue
Electrolite
Leaving New York
Orange Crush
Final Straw
Walk Unafraid
Losing my Religion

Imitation of Life
The Great Beyond
Perfect Circle
(Donīt go back to) Rockville
Nightswimming
Iīm gonna DJ
Man on the Moon

Just wish I was standing instead of seated. Was very jealous looking down to the pit at the front.

Fantastic concert. Was also seated but would have loved to be in the pit at the front!

Particularly loved Nightswimming and Electron Blue. Michael Stipe is just amazing - the things he can do with his body!

More than made up for the cancelled concert.

Richard's music was okay, but not being too critical; it wasn't really stadium music was it? More suited to smaller clubs (in which it's great!)

The Hammond organ style backing, really needs to be dropped though, felt like I was on Blackpool Pier (never a good thing...)

206 d7 (on my own) pretty much on the other side of the arena. I tried to blag my way into the standing bit, but the security were having non of it :(

Did you enjoy it?

I was there and had a fantastic time right at the front (although a camping stool would have come in handy for 10 minutes or so). Aching legs today after much dancing. My highlight was probably Losing My Religion.

You not from Sheffield then?? :|

I went basically to see Hawley, this man is Sheffield through and through and bloody genius.

REM's sound was rubbish, they should shoot their sound man.

Coles Corner is part of Sheffield folklore. You'll find it at the end of Fargate, adjacent to the Anglican Cathedral and Telegraph House. Now occupied by a nondescript office block and a branch of the HSBC, it was once home to the original Cole Brothers store before it moved to Barker's Pool and was a place where Sheffield's friends and lovers would meet in years gone by.

I was there last night purely for Hawley and I wasn't disappointed. REM have never really done it for me and I left halfway through for a pint, a cigarette and the supreme pleasure of watching the security guards forcefully ejecting a ticketless punter. It was certainly more interesting than REM anyway.

Of course, all musical taste is subjective. You either get it or you don't. Hawley's music is pretty much unique at the moment and this year, at long last, could finally see him make the move from the critically acclaimed cult figure he is at the moment into something far more substantial. Several big names have lauded Hawley and name checked him on numerous occasions, like REM's Mike Mills, Coldplay's Chris Martin and Radiohead's Thom Yorke. His sound is different, certainly beautiful but from a bygone age and recalls the likes of Roy Orbison, Scott Walker, Lee Hazlewood and the blues music he was brought up on. When Hawley sings "I'm on nights, we need the money, I'm half alive but I'm thinking of you" he raises the mundane to a level of profundity and paints the lives of ordinary Sheffielders on a widescreen scale. He evokes vivid imagery of those unsung generations who slaved in hard, dangerous and thankless jobs and had nothing in the world except love. It's timeless and it's beautiful.

Richard Hawley is almost elevated to the level of Sheffield royalty. I'm sure he has Henderson's Relish flowing through his veins. I hope that he finally gets the recognition he so sorely deserves. Sheffield has always done things differently, has never sheepishly followed a musical trend and has sometimes suffered for it at the hands of an ignorant musical press that has to be led bleeting to the next big thing.

Michael, Peter & Mike were fantastic...thank you...I'm afraid my locale "fanbase" were less than great...YOU B'ST'RDS!!the people directy behind me only came to 'life' during "everybody hurts"(the most cliiche'd REM song ever), Losing my religon, Man on the moon'etc. I stood up for the WHOLE OF THE ENCORE, (if you were in my block there YES, I WAS THE FAT, 20 STONE BLOKE, but I don't care (STICK TO YOUR CRAPPY DIDO, WHOEVER GIGS), THIS IS REM not the 4 Selectiive SONGS YOU KNOW BY REM,

To Michael, Peter & Mike, I LOVED your set...I love Sheffied, and maybe (please, maybe) REM rule, but the Audience at the Arena last night DO NOT!

Agreed. We were in front standing where the atmosphere was pretty lively but looking around the arena I couldn't believe how many people in the seated areas stayed sat down. It was like being at the cinema!

Still, excellent gig!

I was moderately pleased by the show, though I'm not the biggest REM fan out there. Like U2, they have loads of painfully average songs yet still sell by the bucket load.

Was interesting hearing large segments of the crowd boo when Stipe mentioned touring in Turkey...

Still, decent performance though.

probably hit my point exactly, REM are more than the whole media friendly 'Out of time', Automatic for the people' Ford Mondeo driving public, It's OK, but it catagorically ruined the experience for me when 'laddo' behind me deemed it necessary to chat, no, SHOUT to his partner/4 piece group at every song (less Everybody hurts/Losing my religion/man on the moon) & have the nerve to comment on ME enjoying current tracks such as 'Electron Blue' 'Leave' etc (I could go on)...Sorry Sheffied...(I'm sure that my gig "counterparts" were not from this fine city, but I am Totally Disappointed

I'm glad someone else has mentioned the sound, it was appalling.

Hawley was fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed his set, and can't wait for the meteoric rise he's set to get.

Did anyone read Hawley's "Coles Corner" album sleeve notes?

A few posts from here were used, seemingly as inspiration, and the site was acknowledged on the last page.
