Another good home win that was as convincing as the result suggests but slightly disappointing.Charlton are a shambles and didn't make a game of it.

A few years ago we played them in the cup and they beat us comfortably. At the time i thought they were the role model for most clubs. There passing, movement and awareness was far better than us.Today we never got out of second gear and could and should have made it a rout.It just shows how things can change.

Getting back to the match Law's certainly knows where to find good players.Buxton,Potter and Grey all played well and looked at home.Buxton's been here a while and the loss of Simek isn't being noticed. In fact i think Buxtons better.
The midfield showed more and Potter was the best of the lot.If he can't get into the Wolves side they must have a good side.Grey kept himself involved, something plenty of wingers fail to do.He threatened plenty of times and his ball for Jeffers goal was inch perfect.I think we missed Watsons drive though.I'm sure he'd have made us up the tempo second half.

The man of the match though has to be Tudgay. His all round game is tremendous. He wins most headers, links up play and was just what Jeffers needed as a partner up front.Jeffers has looked better lately and a goal was bound to come from his play.He was unlucky first half with a couple of chances and took his goal very well from a tight angle.Hopefully more will follow.Class is perminant apparently so it's time he repaid Law's faith in him.Let's hope so.

At the back we looked solid.Beevers was more like his old self and Wood was as steady as ever.Spurr was caught out a couple of times but still wins his personal battle.

4-1 shouldn't be disappointing but Charlton didn't want to know.
Maybe it's a measure of how far we've come. The return of Sodje and Leon should add to the squad and make us look a stronger team.
Whether they can get back into the side is another thing.;)

MR BENN
17-01-2009, 20:17
Sodje will walk back into the team at the expense of Jeffers when he`s 100% fit. he gives us something different and defenders hate playing against him with his pace and power

Apparently he's been training with the first team for a couple of weeks now.Law's say's he'll play in a practice match this week.
I'm sure there'll be a place for him in the starting 11.He lifts the team with his presence alone.Today he'd have ran them ragged.Hopefully he'll be fit for the lane.
I know a few Blunts who'll have trouble sleeping worrying about him.

I must admit it was rather quiet. My lad managed to get some free tickets (before it starts we were gonna go anyway!) and the West stand lower was deathly quiet apart from myself and a few other regular attendees.

Its great getting the future generation in but we need to have prematch and halftime singalong sessions with the words on a big chalkboard!

Well the attendance figures say 28,766 and id say Charlton brought about 700, how any1 can say there was 28 thou at Hillsborough is lying, there was plenty more than that.
Some tax man is getting robbed somewhere, the kop south and north were jam packed there were not 12.000 spare seats in that ground.
Even the leppings lane lower was open so that would have added to the small attendance of charlton

I was on the away stand so could see all 3 home stands. Apart from the obvious gaps ie behind the poles on the Kop, every single seat was taken.

Were you there? No - so dont make a fool of yourself further talking about stuff you know nothing about.

Jeez - why does everything turn into an arguement?

we should be thankful we won, usually lose against teams we should beat. from what i've read it doesnt sound like charlton offered much anyway so 3 points will do. sounded like potter should of had another from the free kick but it wasnt judged to cross the line. with these new signings hopefully we can get a bit more consistency and push on to near the playoffs. think we only need another 5 wins maybe and we should be safe.
when i drove past the kop and south stand looked rammed so maybe your right about the attendance, i must admit i expected over 30k

It was the best display I've seen all season although Charlton were really poor. J.Johnson was man of the match in my opinon, tore the Charton defence apart. Jeffers worked so hard again and scored a from an unlikely angle. He's getting fitter, more confident and I'm now convinced he'll be our top striker for the run in.
Potter was brilliant also, great goal, close skill and vision. A real find. Sign him up!
As for the attendance, if there were 30k at the derby then 28,766 seems about right, the cop wasn't as full and the lane end was empty. I reckon both stats were quite a bit under the truth!
Maybe we can have an underground paper at the end of the season with the actual gates!

It's probably a bit misleading for the regular Owls fans though - with you having been there with the crowds around 17k this season, it would've looked in comparison like it was full yesterday. Used to feel the same at the lane, you got the impression that is was virtually all full, and then the attendance would be given as 25k...

Maybe they're not allowed to include the free tickets in the attendance? Otherwise, if you're implying that the new Chairman has fiddled the gate figures to reduce the tax bill, that's not a great start to the 'new era' :) Sounds like some of the previous United chairmen then too!

Good point about the free tickets, if that is the case then there would have been about 32 33 thousand there which sounds a lot more like it.

However many were there, it was a crackin game!

Thought the team looked like more of a well...team. Loved the fact that Potter covered the defence and was always snapping and looking to get forward (summat Seany Mac hasn't quite mastered yet) and will get better with every game. Gray was outstanding: his brain and technique were complimented by the fact that he still has a good engine & was still bombing around even in injury time.

Tudgay was his usual effervescent self & was a constant threat. Special mention must really go to Jeffers though. He really is looking summat like now. Many people have been gettin on his back (and with some reason) but his link up play was second-to-none yesterday, he didn't lose the ball as he has been doing and looked jam-hot in the box.

All the rest played solidly particularly Dickie Wood [smirk]. Does anyone know what the crack with JJ is, btw?

I've had so many false dawns with Wednesday that i'm not gonna wax too lyrical but there is definitely a mood of change down there and although Charlton were pants-on-sticks, we still had to beat them and beat them well.

Big thanks to the crowd, the Straffatron, Lawsey & the lads.

I think a special mention also has to go out to my new missus, who sat through it all without moaning once and secretly quite enjoyed it. And her decision to wear my old away shirt to bed that same evening, despite it being at the bottom of my gym bag for several days, was nothing short of genius. [pulls sex face]

Up the Owls!

There was plenty of space on the kop and a few seats here and there on the South Stand. The main thing is it's got people who stopped going to go again, hopefully more often. The reduction in prices for the remainder of the season will also help.It has at the lane.
The best thing is we now have a feel good factor, decent team and a manager that can spot a player. We are far better now than when Law's arrived and we've sold players worth over £6m.If that's not a major achievement i don't know what is.

not since the hillsborough disaster it isn't , a man on the turnstiles got jailed for letting people in for nothing . since then grounds have to know and say exactly how many fans are in the ground .any club caught massaging the figures now would be closed down . anyway to do a fiddle like that the whole ticketing staff would have to be involved .

It's always hard to judge how many seats are filled when in the ground, it's only when you see the tv coverage and photos afterwards that you can see how many empty seats there where.

But, who cares, without this price incentive, we'd have another crowd of around 15,000, lets just hope we can keep some of these stayaway fans for the Birmingham match.

Did you go to the game ? They gave away a few thousand tickets to school kids, alot didn't take up the offer (some where probably blunts, parents couldn't accompany them, some probably had no interest) which resulted in less than two thousand occupying the lower west stand.

I was in the South Stand so can only comment on what I could actually see. The away end holds circa 7200 (I think) including the seating in the unused corner. There were around 750 in both the upper and lower, so that makes around 5700 empty seats.

The white seats on the North Stand at the side of the corner were completely empty and there were other empty seats, so lets say 1000. There were plenty of empty seats on the Kop, say 2000. Someone mentioned that they noticed some empty seats on the South Stand, say 300.

That accounts for 9000, and I am only guessing so I don't think that the 28700 was that far out.

the new people have at least instilled a bit of interest for the supporters and winning in front of 28000 can only encourage peole to attend to go again .
problem is at full price a father can't afford to pay for him and two kids , thats understandable anywhere , dave richards used to take schooltrips and scouts etc on tours round the ground , he always said they were the future season ticket holders . celtic do a really cheap deal for kids every game apart from rangers games , they leave the rangers game out for safety issues nothing else.
