after about 25 years i've decided to take up knitting again. Due to mobility problems i spend a lot of time indoors and wanted something to do other than the computer or reading books. I wondered if anyone had any old patterns they didn't want or anything else i could use to get myself started again.

Hi there Bernie and welcome to the group. If you want to get ourself re-started very cheaply you often find needles and old patterns (and sometimes yarn) available in charity shops.
