Im not an expert with birds or fish but here are a few possibilities to start you off!
1) Probably to simulate the wild and give better excercise for feet
2) Im sure they use cuttlefish for this
3) Sorry I don't know!
4) I think it may be tumours but I'm not 100% sure

With regards to rats, they can suffer from a range of ailments, one of the most common is referred to as a myco flare up: http://www.rmca.org/Articles/myco.htm
Flare ups of myco can be reduced by using suitable bedding (ie not sawdust, straw as they're both too dusty and sharp), cardboard bedding or vetbed are recommended.
Female rats are also prone to mammory tumours (especially poorly bred pet shops rats), these can be removed by a vet who is familiar with small animal operations and the rat is otherwise in good health.
Rats are also prone to PTs - pituitary tumours. The symptoms of these vary but it's a very gradual loss off the use of their hands, sometimes a change in personality and ultimately death. They shouldn't be confused with strokes which are sudden and tend to affect one side of the body. Rats can make very good recovery from strokes with the use of steriods and antibiotics.
Rats can also get ear infections causing head tilts (treatable with antibiotics) and other ailments, I can't list them all here, plus thankfully there are some I've never seen. ;)
Hope that helps. If you want more information, check out http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/

depends what bird it is but parrots ie greys need calcium supplements they get it through a product called calcivet, palm oil also as they cant absorb it through food, also perches its good to have sand perches as it keeps there claws down .natural wood is best also but not all wood apple tree branches are good believe it or not parrots get sore feet from standing on incorrect perches.

sorry also birds need spraying with a fine mist of water a few times a week to keep the dust down they produce ie greys macaws cockatoos amazons etc this also encourages them to preen there selves
