View Full Version : Cameras on Penistone Road

Had a search through the fifty-thousand-page speed camera thread but couldnt find any mention of these things.

There are two cameras positioned about halfway up a lamp post on Penistone Road, just past Monty's Lexus as you travel towards town.

It appears the cameras are positioned to look at each lane of oncoming traffic.

They dont look like any sort of camera I've seen on the road before. They only appeared over the last couple of days.

Any ideas?

Chuffin ell, I'm glad you have mentioned this cos I drive down there back from work everyday and only tend to slow down for the big yellow one further up.

Why is it 30mph on there anyway, surely 40 would be more suitable?.

Are they definitely speed cameras, or just ones which monitor the flow of traffic, etc? There's some similar sounding ones on the Wicker.

I will ask around as I'm off to work in a bit and someone is bound to know.

phew thats alright then. I got worried for a minute. I too only normally watch out for the big yellow one further down towards town side. I cant believe the speed limit is so slow on that road. Not one single person sticks to it. Not even grandad.

Traffic flow cameras eh? You know that for sure? I've never seen things that look like these before. In fact the only things that look similar are the cameras they have on the entrances to Meadowhall car park, so I supose it adds up.

Was just wondering what they are cos I'm nosey, nothing more!

Lets not turn this into a speed camera/speeding thread - any complaints about penistone road's 30 limit should probably be aimed in the general direction of this thread:

Although I'm sure that particular moan will have been more than covered somewhere in it's 847 posts :)

i was told the reason it is a 30 and not 40 speed on there is because it was set many years ago when there were more houses around there and the law has not been changed because no one objected. i think 30 is way to slow on a dual carrigeway

The mobile camera guys were being really sneaky tonight, hiding behind a bush on the 30 section of the A61, just before you get to the downhill 40mph dual carriage-way, that leads to the roundabout at the bottom of Hillsborough.

I thought they had to be clearly visible - they were once you were right on top of them...

Hey if you want to be really scared, the latest MCN (motorcycle news) has pictures of the latest digital CATS EYE MOUNTED GATSO CAMERAS.
That's right, there would be absolutely no warning or indication that you were anywhere near a camera, and they will measure your average speed over a certain distance.
The manufacturer is called Astucia, speeding could really start to be a thing of the past....:o

Well it does look like the police will soon have every corner coverd when it comes to speeding.
I wonder if the main pylons which overlook the motorways will also be used to check your speed, after all the give out the various warnings which are coming up such as workmen in the road or possible delays or dont drink and drive. etc etc.
