View Full Version : Best beer garden in City Centre? designbunny 14-06-2005, 09:28 Where is the best beer garden in the city centre - in terms of space, good seating, good plants, looks great, something a bit unusual?? nick2 14-06-2005, 09:29 The Rutland near the (what was) pop music museum has a nice beer garden, and nice beer. I can't think of any others in town. samc 14-06-2005, 09:40 I was going to say the Rutland.....:( So I'll go for the Red Deer - just city centre I think. Swan_Vesta 14-06-2005, 09:43 BrB's has a cheeky little patio area out back ........ very nice to sit and chill out during the summer months as it's a proper sun trap. OwlsChick 14-06-2005, 11:08 id say the sheif up bramhall lane could do with a grass cut mind but its massive. got a park for little en's. loads ov picnic tables. its an alright pub inside aswell thats my suggestion anywayz but i warn you it is up bramhall lane. watch out for them flying pigs  designbunny 14-06-2005, 16:39 Ok, so not many pubs then. What about cafe's or restaurants - or even nice areas in the city centre like gardens, where people can go to have a picnic! I know the winter gardens + peace gardens ... is there anywhere hidden, like roof top cafe's or something? robbie 14-06-2005, 23:27 the terrace in Wetherspoons is really good. Meaks 14-06-2005, 23:40 Not much of a great boozer these days but the Yorkshire Grey beer garden aint too bad and quite big. The Roebuck has a nice patio as well next door. Just out of town is the Kelham Island Tavern who have a nice garden and the Riverside with a patio by the river. I would have said the same. Also BarS1 has a similar little courtyard out back and they sometimes do BBQ's out there. I love Ha Ha simply for it's position, (but all the building work this year makes it less comfortable). Perhaps Hanrahan's ??? Andy C 15-06-2005, 11:41 Delice de France on Chapel Walk has a small rooftop cafe.. benclements2 15-06-2005, 11:46 Originally posted by robbie the terrace in Wetherspoons is really good. But at the end of the day it's still wetherspoons. It's still a rubbish pub. It still takes half an hour to get served. And it's still full of cheapskates. holster100 15-06-2005, 14:12 I've said for a while Sheffield is absolutely rubbish for beer gardens. You go to other cities, and there's always loads of nice places you can chill outside. In Sheffield there's very very few. Wasn't it something to do with the council never granting licences for outside drinking? I seem to remember the coffee place/building society on the high street applying to have a few seats outside, but then getting refused by the council. You go to other cities, and there's always loads of nice places you can chill outside. I have to agree holster100. This is one reason why I like to go to places like York. In summer - and if I'm honest, more often than not in winter - you can sit outside places like Roman Bath, Ye Old Star Inn (with views of the Minster), Cross Keys, Exhibition (normally bedecked with flowers), Old White Swan (outside AND covered), infact, many, many pubs. Then there are the riverside retreats, the most famous being The King's Arms (the one you see when it floods), Bar 38, and Piano and Pitcher. Sheffield more of less boasts three decent city-located beer gardens: Rultand Arms, Hanrahans and the Riverside. And for the record, we're about 10 times the size of York! probedb 17-06-2005, 15:09 I find it amusing outside the Ha Ha bar as they only have a license outside for a certain area so when we moved our seats to get a bit of sun we had to move them back :) vicelords 17-06-2005, 17:27 [QUOTE]Originally posted by holster100 [B]I've said for a while Sheffield is absolutely rubbish for beer gardens. If you don't like going out in sheffield move or go somewhere else to drink Jon 18-06-2005, 20:45 When i worked at The Sportsman pub on Cambridge Street that beer garden was well used. This is before it turned into a rock pub. Kthebean 18-06-2005, 20:56 The rutland is definitely best, although the varsity and the west end have beer gardens that you might not know about. The forum beer garden looks like a swimming pool! robbie 18-06-2005, 21:02 The Red Deer has a nice very small Beer garden. The Rutland's is also nice. Crimson 19-06-2005, 10:27 The Rutland probably is the best, but the Fat Cat has got a great beer garden, though it's a little bit out of the way. As for picnic areas, have you tried the garden in front of the United Reform Chuch on Norfolk Street? Or if you want grass, there's a really nice lawn hidden away behind the Cathedral, on the left hand side. katiekat 19-06-2005, 13:34 has to be the Rutland PeterPan 19-06-2005, 15:00 crystals is pretty good, except th view of th car park, but gets sun allday and loads of seating pretty big althou lions liars is pretty mint aswellgets sun allday, just bit small applejuice 19-06-2005, 21:50 I say crystal too. on sat the atmosphere was amazing Serafina 20-06-2005, 15:28 I may be biased, but I am quite proud of our small and 'compact' garden at the Red Deer! It has flowers, a ladybird house, a pub cat and a few tables. I'd love to get a little fountain but I already have to pick fag ends out of the flowers, so it is perhaps not a good idea! hoegarden 20-06-2005, 19:53 where IS the rutland arms actually ? i know its city center - but where exactly??? robbie 20-06-2005, 20:03 go past the Showroom on your left from the roundabout and its on the corner as the road turns right up to Arundel Gate hoegarden 20-06-2005, 20:07 thanks robbie - cant understand how i missed it - specially seeing as i use the train so much?! Serafina - i absolutely agree with you. in fact red deer is such a lovely pub in general - great staff, food , garden and , for me, the best thing is thats its so cosy. rare in a sheffield pub these days... Paul2412 20-06-2005, 20:58 I think the best place is on ecclesall road, cant remember the name of the pub but its opposite champs! has pool tables and loads of seats outside... Other than that there is a place just abit further down from cavendish on the same side of the road that has a good one, not really the best with names... |
