It IS the highest form of wit, and that is NOT up for question.
Unfortunatly you need a sense of humour to appreciate it.
Without humour there would'nt be any sarcasm, and life would be very dull.:suspect:
well i thought that! i still need some proof in this matter to prove a point! if anyone can find any could you put a link up, please! :)

When I was young, I was told it was the lowest form of wit:confused:
LellyBee 14-06-2005, 09:03 I thought it was the lowest form of wit too
Same as swearing was supposed the be the lowest form of intelligence.
Not that it's ever stopped me ;) Sometimes a good old fashioned expletive fits my mood perfectly!

Bandylegs 14-06-2005, 09:04 Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, but therein lies the basis of all wit

Ousetunes 14-06-2005, 09:15 I've yet to post without my comments having an ironic sarcasm. Some would say I'm a negative thinker.
Not me, Sheffield City Council take that accolade.
Viz, The Heart of the City.
Obviously, listening to Morrissey and the Smiths for the past 20 years is going to have some effect!
Sarcasm?? On this Forum??!! Never!

While we're doing Wilde quotes, here's one for some of the Forummers:
It is only the intellectually lost who ever argue.

sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, highest form of humour.
seriously im not kidding!
Nah, it's lower than low in my opinion.
Any bog standard wannabe joker, can just turn around whats been said and make it into scarcasm. . yet a proper commedian will be able to give funnier angles, observations, foybles and interpretations based on his own interlectual opinions, thoughts and musings.
Although, I admit scarcasm can be useful on the odd occasion, however if it's used too often, becomes very boring, very predictable, very quickley....

So what about irony?
It's like goldy and bronsey. . . but made of iron. . .
it depends on the context of the sarcasm and who its coming from, in what attitude also.its can be pretty funny, but then unfunny also.
Sarcasm is best when the person on the recieving end takes a while to realise youre being sarcastic. I think subtlety is the key
Which of course, is when it tends to become ironic ;)
Sarcasm can be very funny, and a withering delivery can aid its effect. However, multi-layered irony, as used by the late journalist and bon viveur, Auberon Waugh is perhaps the highest form of wit. It is a deluxe version of sarcasm, containing 'traps' for the unwary pompous types it is aimed at, and usually more than one 'trap'. It relies upon a mastery of the written word that few possess, and has to be grammatically correct, and as elegant and cruel as a Leopard. Peter Cook could sometimes rise to this level, as can Alan Bennett on occasion.

Correct, I replied to a post by Dan Sumption in which he said, 'I was being sarcastic'. I began my post by saying something like, 'it's the highest form of wit, apparently'. This was meant sarcastically and I'm sure he 'got it'. Virtually everything I said at one point in my life was sarcastic, but I am much mellower now that I am old and nearing the grave.
