View Full Version : RSPCA to prosecute owners who put their dogs in clothes
Not strictly true...
IF they are overheating. The RSPCA have warned that they will prosecute owners who put their dogs in clothes causing them to overheat.
Hopefully it'll come as a warning in time for the warmer weather and combat some of the idiots who want to dress their dogs up in fashion hoodies despite some of them being long haired and most waaaaay too warm!
I put a coat on Eddy in this cold weather, and if it's raining - as he has arthritis (and he's been known to wear a jumper) and Takara's had a t-shirt as an anxiety wrap but never if they're too warm!
Let's hope less dogs will suffer this summer.
Captain_Scarlet 15-01-2009, 19:57 That and it's easy to have your dog look rather ridiculous...
sarahjane 15-01-2009, 20:09 I was in BHS at Meadowhall at Xmas and nearly passed out when I saw they were selling denim mini skirts for dogs! I'm sorry if I offend anyone on here but what sort of idiot would put a mini skirt on a dog??
Ridiculous!!
Speaking of ridiculous, Poppy has just eaten yet another shoe!!!!! lol!
Mojo our king Charles spaniel wears her jumpers everyday as she has no undercoat and is cold in the weather we have had recently, She doesn't wear them in warm weather. The vet actually said to me after she had had alot of tests that we needed to make sure in winter she was warm enough because of her thin coat.
I wouldn't put her in a mini skirt but she has 2 hoodies and 2 jumpers and a coat for very cold days.
Like I said, for practical purposes I agree totally, my two have them...
But I know someone, for example with an overweight long haired dog and he wears knitted jumpers in the middle of the summer!!
I don't have a problem with fashion hoodies and other such clothes for cold weather when dogs need it - but too many dogs don't need them and suffer when their owners decide they'd look cute :(
sarahjane 15-01-2009, 20:31 I agree completely and if a dog is cold why shouldn't it wear a jumper or coat. If Poppy was too cold she would be straight in one.
I just think like most things, people go too far.
We put Duffle in Parkas stripy hoodie this morning and she refused to move completely, just stood there looking disgusted, she was not pleased at all.
sarahjane 15-01-2009, 20:36 Lol, perhaps she didn't like the style!
Haha bless her! I can just see her now!
I also agree. I have a long haired dog. I put him in a waterproof coat on one of the coldest days we had and i think he appreciated it but if it is any warmer it makes him pant and is just not necessary.
However they both where jumpers when we camp as at night even in the summer it gets chilly in the tent. I agree with clothes for practical purposes not for dress up dogs are not toys or children or fashion accessories.
To be honest i am a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the clothes, i like functional although Tilly did have a bright pink fleece with sheep on lol.
One of the children I look after brought Mojo leg warmers lol
pets@home 15-01-2009, 21:08 its nice to know they are putting their resources to good use

i cant despise dog clothes, mine wear fleece coats and waterproofs all with wacky patterns but hounds get soooooo cold, and my girls run off in very thin fleece jumpers in winter. but otherwise thats it. annax
Lynz&Rox 16-01-2009, 08:44 My dog only wears his waterproof coat when its cold at night and he goes on his walk before bed. Its just like a horse rug because he wont have anything that his legs go through, like a tshirt or jumper. Id never put him in a mini skirt, 1 because hes a boy! but also because its not practical for the dog! Jumpers and hoodies are good for dogs that feel the cold.
beansforyou 16-01-2009, 09:30 Good news.
My dog wears clothing because she's tiny and it's cold outside, but she won't be in warm weather.
Do they prosecute people for overfeeding their dogs?
Aye, Zach's been so much more active in the cold now he's got his t-shirt to wear. It's really made so much difference.
Now you come to mention it, I do remember seeing dogs in summer wearing thick coats. Bizarre really. As for fashion items, well dogs are just another accessory to some people.
beansforyou...
They do try, really they do. I remember the story of an 11stone chocolate labrador who's owners were taken to court for overfeeding him so much he could barely walk but the courts ruled they could have the dog back and there was nothing the RSPCA could do.
Appalling really, people go on about the RSPCA not doing their job, but I heard another story today about when the RSPCA took a dog from it's owner who was abusing it and left it at kennels.
Kennel staff left the kennels unattended for some reason that was beyond their control (don't know the exact details) and the owner broke in and took the dog back.
The police couldn't do anything because he owned the dog. Disgusting.
breaking and entering springs to mind
Much of the criticism the RSPCA receive is to do with their incompetence in the courtroom, it has little to do with them not doing their job. If they are to remain a prominent force in animal welfare they need to get it together or risk losing credibility.
Lotti;
I heard another story today about when the RSPCA took a dog from it's owner who was abusing it and left it at kennels.
Why if the dog was being abused was it deposited at a kennels?
sorry, that was put wrong!
The RSPCA took the dog and put it in kennels after removing it from the owner who was abusing it.
It's been a long day...

I'm not criticising your choice of words Lotti but i understood that if an animal was being abused the RSPCA would make efforts to educate an owner and if that failed, then they would confiscate it and put under their own care not place it in kennels.
I don't know which kennels these were... this is what I was told of the story, I don't have the full details.
Perhaps it was RSPCA kennels?
oceamics 17-01-2009, 17:38 I know most people on here defend the RSPCA and I think that most of the time that is the case, but on a few occasions that I have reported anything to them I have found them less than helpful and sometimes are too willing to pass jobs off .
when i got my teacup chihuahua puupy i looked on the net for a coat for him for winter and i was shocked at some of the clothes i came across!!! dressing gowns, suits, bridle wear, swim wear!!!!!!!!!! and these were uk sites not american!!! :loopy:
angellic 17-01-2009, 20:42 Its a joke theres many reasons why a dog could wear a coat outside including rotties who have natural waterpoof coat stilll suffer with their joints in cold weather
angellic 17-01-2009, 20:46 teacup chihuahua = a dodgy breeder selling arunt at more than den half price

and how quickly they've jumped on the dangerous dogs bandwagon now wheels are finally in motion
angellic, if you read the post, it says for dogs that are suffering as a result!
They're not going to pull someone up about a rottie wearing a coat if it needs it.
And I'm not sure why the need to belittle j118nne's post about having a teacup chi, ok you may not disagree with it, but she didn't ask for opinions on her choice of dog!!

thank u lotti!!
i have a chinese crested hairless and she does have to have coats for the cold winter months but i dont go to the extreme of "doggy clothes", just something to do the job is good enough, in summer she has to have sun lotion on as her skin would burn. I am afraid this breed is a top candidate for dressing up as most pictures of them on the internet will show.
I made Brude a 'coat' for halloween, but it was made out of one of Mr Strix's old railway vests and a pair of shell type joggers, and was intended to make him visible whilst at Fright Night so nobody would stand on him. Okay, the hi-vis stripes from the vest became spiders on his coat, but the whole thing was for a practical use
btw - I had to put it on him several times during 'construction', and would you believe he sulked when I took it off him

ahhhhh strix what a lovely boy, and love the outfit he looks proud to be wearing it hehehe
i have to put a coat on my mini chi cause i treat him like a dog n not a carry toy n he comes to the stables with me n its chilly, but he hates wearing it!!!
[QUOTE=Strix;4575924]and would you believe he sulked when I took it off him
..er......no
I have a huge problem with dog clothes, not coats, as coats serve a purpose particularly with old/arthritic dogs getting wet and cold during the winter. My problem with clothes is that most of them are not designed with the dogs comfort in mind, Goggles, hats, shoes, tuxedos and flying jackets are not protective wear and to put them on in the summer is ridiculous. I cringe when I see dogs dressed up as children and I refuse to sell such items in my shop on principle (even though I would be laughing all the way to the bank if I did sell them)
and would you believe he sulked when I took it off him
..er......no
you should read some older threads and get a better idea of how unbelievable this houndlet is then :P
there are only two other pets on this group (that I know of) that fall into the same category as this Gromit clone - Jess's horse, Rhia, and Lotti's dally, Takara. Did you read Jess's post on Rhia climbing through an electric fence?
ahhhhh strix what a lovely boy, and love the outfit he looks proud to be wearing it heheheHe's got his head down and a face on in that shot coz he doesn't like me taking pics from behind him. If the camera comes out, he likes to be square in the middle of the pic showing his ears off
Ghostrider 25-01-2009, 02:42 Putting dogs in clothes that are not for safety purposes...sad, very sad..
