View Full Version : Sheffield Pub Tour
Snakey_B 15-01-2009, 19:27 Me and a few friends have started to do a bit of a pub tour of sheffield, once a week we go out one night to 2-3 pubs in a area in which weve never had a drink before. But were coming to a bit of a standstill as we dont know a massive amount on where all the pubs are(were from just outside sheffield ,donfield) So anybody know a decent website in which lists pubs by area with a map option ?? The little blue book - Real Ale in Sheffield - I think it was called (AndyC will know) is what you need.
Very useful and only about 4 quid. Divides city up by areas and lists every pub (real ale or not), with photos and maps. Slightly outdated now (about 4 years?) but still fairly reliable - the good pubs are still good pubs by and large. Maybe out of print though?
Galbraith 16-01-2009, 08:39 Good lists Andy C!
Just a note about the Crookes/moor area. Masons is currently closed, but hopefully not for too long.
Confusingly the Hallamshire Hotel, top of Lidgate Lane, Crookes, is actually the 'Mad House'. The Hallamshire House on School Road is not. The amount of confusion this causes....
How about a University list? Springfield, West End, Harley, Uni arms, Star & Garter. Not all necessarily great pubs, but a compact little area which could lead to Walkley, Broomhill or the Red Deer/Red House/Fagans/Dog&Partridge/Three Tuns/Three Cranes(still open?) area?

I think this is pretty dated now. A lot of pubs which did not stock real ale 4 years ago have woken up to the HUGE increase in real Ale sales over the last couple of years, and so many real ale outlets will not be listed. It wont list either of my pubs I would guess

It was out of date as soon as it came out.
But it lists all pubs whether they sell/sold real ale or not and tells you where they are. The ones without real ale don't get much coverage, but they are at least listed (and many now sell real ale - eg the York!). So if you're going to, say Broomhill, and don't know the area, it is still useful as a local pub guide. But yes an updated version would be nice. Trouble is the rate of pub closures will make this difficult I would think.
By the way, the OP didn't mention real ale, or indeed any sort of ale at all, so maybe they're not bothered about cask beer, just the pubs.
Snakey_B 17-01-2009, 09:17 Thankyou very much Andy! I was also thinking up norton leas ,sportsman ,mount view prince of wale and then cross (cant reamember but its down the same road as prince). The talbot arms isnt open anymore ,its closed. Last day was last friday ive been informed.....
Snakey_B 18-01-2009, 19:43 Where can i pick up this little blue book ? Ive has a look on ebay ,waterstones website and also searched on googlebut found nothing......
Also wheres the princess royal pub mentioned after the old grindstone ? And the pubs mentioned on the walkey tour are they all on that main walkey road (the one on which you pass the star and garter pub.....)
Galbraith 19-01-2009, 10:10 The Princess Royal is on Slinn Street in Crookes. Slinn Street runs between Western Road and Heavygate Road. It's a nice friendly local, not far from either the Cobden View or Heavygate. Or for that matter the Punchbowl, which is not included on the Crookes list...
Walkley - only the Rose and Freedom are on South Road - the main road which passes Star & Garter and changes it's name every 50 yards. Bolsover Street, Winter Street, Crookes Valley Road, Barber Road, Commonside, South Road - any I missed? The Springvale and Hadfield are also on that road between Star & Garter and Rose House. And the Dram Shop, best offy for miles...
The other pubs in the Walkley list aren't far from the main drag. Also the Crown and the Palm aren't included in that list.

The book is called 'A Real Ale Guide to Sheffield'. It's a bit out of date now but still reasonably useful. You can order it online at www.camra.org.uk/shop you will need to click on the link for 'Beer and Pub guides'.
We are looking at publishing a new edition next year and will be looking for volunteers to survey pubs at some point soon...

I think the list above will be just those that are currently known to sell real ale. It's not a complete list of every pub in every area of Sheff.

The Dove & Rainbow always served real ale so will be in the guide but has much improved since the Goldenfleece takeover, elsewhere in the city centre we now have real ale available at RSVP, Bungalows & Bears, Forum, Old House, Nelson and Varsity. Muse has become Dogma, Circle has opened and closed, The 192 club has become the University Arms pub etc etc.

I think the little blue book must be out of print now. One of the serious ale pubs may have a copy you could look at to do a bit of research over a pint. It was an exhausitive list, but more of a historical document now.
Fair enough, I was just trying to help out the OP. They never mentioned Real Ale at all, just pubs in an area to have a drink at.

I know - I made the same point above, and was just making it again here with this example.
Galbraith 19-01-2009, 13:59 Right-o.
(and a bit more cos the post is too short otherwise)
hey all - and sorry Snakey for hijacking your thread - but you have inspired me to do what I did in York and start a FB group with all th places to drink in and around Sheffield.
please feel free to update - so people can get good info about bars and drinking places.

You seem to have missed the Devonshire Cat, which is my favourite place for beer in the town centre. A good range of real ale and one of best ranges of Belgian beer in Sheffield imo.
Good job on those lists BTW, I'll have to look up some of the pubs I've not heard of before.
