hey guys :)

have been using firefox as a friend suggested it was much safer than IE.....but it really seems to struggle with loading certain pages than ie seems to.....and seems to 'get stuck', much more often.

any suggestions as to why....and how to improve?

As my secondary browser I have noticed that the latest version of Firefox, certainly on my computer struggles to load pages.

Try Opera, in my opinion a better browser than Firefox and probably a little more secure as well.

I wonder if it depends on the spec of the PC. On all of the machines I use it's significantly faster than IE, and only on very rare occasions is there a page written so badly that FF can't display it.

Not sure but the previous version was okay, my Firefox upgrades automatically every so often, which is a little bit of a pain, (I assume you can disable this feature somehow) If you want to access something quickly.
IE though is the slowest of the slow.

Firefox has got a bit slower recently, especially when you have lots of extensions installed.

It may be your spec. Firefox is like the proverbial off a shovel for me compared to IE. Everyone else I know in the real world who use it say so too.

I know that's not much help, but it's the best I can do!

Are there particular sites which regularly cause problems, or is it quite random?

You can disable the auto update functionality, I like it personally as it means it's patched as soon as possible when there's an issue.
On my desktop I'm using the 3.2 beta and it's seems pretty stable and quick.

Solomon try out the new Opera 10 Alpha, I've been testing it out and it is a bit faster than the current fully tested Opera (9.63).

http://www.opera.com/browser/next/

It mentions Facebook as one of the sites it was design in mind for, so it should work okay with Facebook.

As it's alpha it is still in Preview, i.e it's not been fully tested out yet so some users may encounter bugs which Opera rely on the user feedback to correct in the full version.

Another added new feature is that it now adds an online spell checker and HTML for intergrated e-mail.

PS Solomon, as it is in Preview Opera 10 doesn't appear to put a shortcut on your desktop after you install it, so to open this version access it via your Programs folder (C Drive).
You can then create a shortcut from the program folder (Right click menu over the Red O icon in Opera 10 Preview folder) and cut and paste it onto your desktop and renaming it Opera 10 (Right click menu).

Firefox is twice as fast as IE7 on my laptop so no idea why yours should be slower.

probably just a question of fiddling with the settings, but not sure how! do you?I4ve been using FF for several years, there are no settings that can be changed to speak of. FF is just faster... As the previous posters have said, it's likely due to your computer's specifications.

Ie talks to windows based servers quicker when first contacting a site but on subsequent views on a site then all browsers should get the data just as quickly and so the most important factors at work are the memory used and how quick the browser is at interpreting the data. Firefox tends to be quicker than I'd but need more memory so if that means your computer has to start using virtual memory things will really slow down in comparison to ie

They are already planning on making a firefox 4 browser which will be 2 x faster then firefox 3 after they rewrite the coding and its going to be 5 x faster than IE 6.

im currently running FF3 with IE8.

Also I sometimes use google chrome which is a good browser aswell uses same coding as IE

Complete rubbish

a) There is no method of measuring browser speed, so FF4 can not be made 2x faster then FF3 (they could say it's a target though), and there's no way they would compare with IE6, from 2001.

b) FF4 will not be a rewrite of FF3 (Windows 7 is not a rewrite of vista, IE8 isn't a rewrite of IE7, etc). There has been too much work put into the Gecko engine to throw it all away and start from scratch.

c) Google chrome is based on the webkit engine, not the trident engine used in IE

There are loads of settings to fiddle with if you stick 'about:config' in the address bar of FireFox.

Best read about what they do before you change them though ;)

More memory can't be a bad thing, particularly if you have lots of programs running at the same time.

Suggesting a computer might need 3Gb RAM just for a browser is madness. :)

My desktop is still (mostly) happy with 1Gb RAM.
