Right them chaps.

Its now January (err slightly in, but seeing as I've not been back to work yet -with tomorrow being the first day...I can get away with announcing January has just started)

Its time to start the stashbustalong.

Feel free to post up amounts of wool used up, projects made, half finished projects finished and the like.

Shall we aim for a mile a month between us knitted up?

Good luck - and remember someone is always here if you feel like you might be falling off the wagon.

Would it be cheating if I donated my ball ends to son 1's term project which is making wool wrappings based on landscapes (we have just had a request from the teacher)? :suspect:

Is it being used up? Is it no longer in the house?

If so, I'd say its game :)

Well I aim to finish off my Toasty Slipover (stupid name) from RYC Winter gifts which seems to have taken a ridiculous amount of time for such a small project and 'Storm' from Kim Hargreaves' Heartfelt, no idea of the length of yarn involved but it's not a lot! Must knit harder!

Today I donated 243g of assorted ball ends to school and have promised 500g of scratchy wool to carriewarr for dog coats ... oh and I have just turned the heel of sock 2 in the Galaxy yarn now I have finally got it to swirl :D

Well done!!

So far I've knitted up 400m of DB Cathay and about 150m of DK acrylic. Pictures to follow when I've located a working camera.

I hope it's not too late to join the Stashbustalong, but I'm making some socks with leftover sock yarn. I've just posted about it on my blog (http://mcknitty.blogspot.com/2009/01/knitting-for-sanity.html) so scroll down if you want to see the progress.

What a fabulous way to stashbust! I would heartily recommend it as an approach!! :hihi:

Well, I have managed to work through 4 balls of Mirasol Miski in cream ( I LOVE Miski) to make a pair of long fingerless mitts and a very basic plain slouchy hat. If this works you can see them here:

and:

The angle of the hat is bizarre, I was hiding my face behind a pillow!

I've made a pair of mittens from one ball of Big Wool, and I've found a crochet pattern for some bookmarks to use up oddments of 4-ply cotton with.

Pictures will follow at some point.

So far I am a spectacular failure at this stashbusting business. Since agreeing to the stashbustalong I have bought the following

- Lots and lots of the 69p a ball stuff in Atkinsons sale (now half a purple fluffy jumper - what was I thinking! - and half a scarf, but there's plenty left)
- Some pink rowan baby aran in case I need to knit baby girl stuff (now a baby bolero).
- 6 more balls of pink baby aran, reason as above.
- 2 skeins of lovely colinette yarn for a birthday present (now a beautiful hat and mitts).
- 5 balls red chunky yarn because I need it for something and Jill only had a few balls left.
- 4 balls of soft lux because my sister-in-law wants a hat to go with her scarf and if I bought double what I needed I wouldn't have to pay the £1.50 postage.

And I have knitted up just one ball from my previously existing stash - a hat.

I'm hoping that by writing it all down and posting it on a public forum I'll shock and embarass myself into trying harder next time... is there a support group for failed stashbusters?

Mr&MrsRadish
14-01-2009, 15:52
I hope so, cryinglion, because i've done almost exactly the same, Atkinsons and Jill somehow finding a use for the money i wasn't going to spend on yarn, and an 18th birthday calling too. Yarnoholics anonymous!

 I too went to see Jill yesterday and came out with 12 balls of Stylecraft luxury merino. On the plus side though I have nearly finished the swirly galaxy socks - hurrah :D Im going to close the original thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=444219)as it seems silly having 2 threads talking about the same thing - hope thats OK.

I have to admit to a weakness. I have bought wool for an afghan. But I have crocheted some more squares so I have used a little. Whoops!!

If not buying yarn is the only thing we are useless at then good on us!

knitbird
16-01-2009, 20:06
Not buying yarn would be unnatural and wrong, but I've realised I buy lovely yarn and then tuck it away "for later"; which if I'm being honest with myself is a bit pointless.

I realised recently I've got enough yarn to make 14 jumpers or cardigans, two felted bags, two blankets, and so many pairs of socks that it makes me feel slightly ill. My ultimate aim at the end of this year is to have got the stash down by at least one box full - permanently. Feel free to tell me I've bitten off more then I can chew!

Mr&MrsRadish
18-01-2009, 17:26
I've actually parted with some yarn. I'm having a panic attack!!! I am selling 2 balls via ravelry. 2 whole balls! I'm sweating at the thought of doing it. The baskets will look so empty without it....aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhh hhhhh!

Here is my stashbusting update:

The Galaxy socks (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/3220425040/)are finally done :D I ended up knitting on 2.75mm needles and casting on 64 stitches to get the swirling - as these would have been too big I knitted them in a k3p1 rib which seems to work rather well.

The Dew (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/3220418902/) scarf (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/3220428652/) is finally done - hurrah! Like the scarf and the Rowan tapestry yarn is lovely too.

So what next - the final sleeve of my Jaden sweater or finish of the Brioche throw - ho hum choices choices.

So far this year I've knitted 14 (complete) balls of wool - and another one or two to add today (emergency birthday socks...who says I leave stuff to the last minute?!)

I have to say, it isn't exactly making much of a difference. This could turn out to be quite a long process....

Have knitted the cable beret, from the first Debbie Bliss mag for my neighbour, who is a complete super star, in some green aran that i bought about 1000 grams of. Got about 700 grams of it left now.

I have made myself a bedsock from some Wensleydale Aran I have had for a while. (its wool by the way, NOT cheese!). I have impressed myself because I started it on Sunday night and finished it on Monday night. I have my son to thank for that - he was poorly :gag: all night and I was sitting up with him and managed to knit to keep myself conscious. Semi-conscious is more like it. I suspect I made mistakes but I will not go looking for them. The second sock will probably take a lot longer...

Well I still haven't done any stashbusting on the original stash but I thought I'd update you on progress with the recently stashed yarn. Purple fluffy jumper, hat and scarf are gifts for, and modelled by, my sister. They've left a fair dent in the huge pile of 69p a ball Atkinson's sale bargains, my sis is pleased with them and they've certainly turned out better than I expected. The yarn for the jumper cost less than £3! I've also made a hat for my sister-in-law.

My advice is to buy a loom, it doesn't half shift yarn. I hope that this will be the year where I finally get to grips with the bags of left over sock yarn that make the yarn drawer look full. Everyone I know will be getting scarves for Christmas unless I graduate to cushion covers and perhaps blankets.

Now i've got my Rebel hat on i know but i am not prepared to give up the only thing that evokes feelings of euphoria, pride, mischief, self satisfaction and self worth for my abilities. NUTS to the credit crunch, i am going to buy as much yarn as humanly possible and i don't care what anybody thinks. Viva la minority!

I see this as your civic duty in helping keep the local yarn store alive and well  Remember the more yarn you have, the more insulation you have in the house so you are in fact being environmentally friendly  :suspect:

I have successfully bought more yarn than knitted this year. My works in progress have either been frogged or hibernated (which just means to be frogged in about 6 months when I'm fed up of looking at it and all hope of finishing it has departed), hence making more stash. Every skein has a project attached to it though and this makes me feel better.
I am using up my leftover sock yarn to make a blanket, estimated finish date somewhere in 2019. I am also making the Maja shawl from Knitty to use my 6 hanks of Black Hills, 3 hanks in and going strong. I am also committed to making the 2nd sock this year.

I have finally finished Jaden (http://www.flickr.com/photos/19810784@N08/3408675537/)- and it fits really well (photos on to follow once it has dried) :D My only real problem with this was that I had to redo the sleeve caps - the ones from the pattern did not fit the armsyce at all! My first attempt at crochet ever - had to do single crochet at crab stitch to stabilise the neckline and it works really well. All in all very pleased and I got it finished in time to wear for the wedding this weekend :D I now only have 2 projects on the needles - hurrah.

Only two! How is this possible? I've been lying to myself over how much I've got on the needles for months, somehow starting new things is so much more attractive than finishing what's already there. Well done with finishing Jaden - do we get the pics of you all dolled up at the wedding?

I've just bought a copule of pattern books that will help me use up yarn I already have, and started a zig-zag crochet throw with some of the lovely Peakwool £1 skeins. Bringing the start tonight as sewing in ends is so much easier when you can chatter at the same time!

Of course it was, otherwise, it would have been stash busting wouldn't it? Anyway having been away twice and to Alli Palli the stash has been growing just like a gingerbeer plant and is now frothing all around my room. Need to see exactly what I have and keep well away from Little Shops on corners and garages if I have any money in pockets.

No. Another stashbusting failure here. I've made lots of stuff but I have much more yarn now than I did when I started this stashbusting thing last year, including considerable amounts of laceweight and sock yarn. I'm never stashbusting again, it's totally counterproductive.

I didn't do any major stashbusting at all either, but I did keep my promise of buying huge amounts of yarn. Perhaps I should think about stashbusting this year. Neither did I finish my 100 project challenge, I only managed 71. Boo Hoo!
