This used to happen quite a lot to me when I lived in Liverpool. The pedestrians of that city have no road sense at all, and many times I nearly drove into a dozy fool who walked (or quite often ran) straight onto a busy road without looking.
One time, I had to perform an emeregncy stop to prevent my car from running a little girl over (she was aged about 10) so I blasted the horn for several seconds, got out of my car and shouted at her, after which she apologised and then burst into tears.
Yes, I felt like a Big Man that day ;)
There is a new craze called something like "Happy Chicken" or something equally stupid I would imagine. They film each other on camera phones getting as close to cars/trains without getting hit. What wrong with playing football in a park like kids used to?

these kids are waiting for the car to get near though and running across the road and back again. infact not even running just skipping across !,! its a game to them. the girl that you missed was probably just being unaware of the road.

In that case, I'd stop the car when safe to do so, then chase after the little bleeders

Yeah it is the latest craze....like happy slapping but with their lives at stake (including others...how long before someone swerves and hits a car travelling the opposite way or even an innocent pedestrian!
There was a large article in the Sunday papers about it at the weekend which feature the train incident (http://www.big-boys.com/articles/hitbytrain.html) which is scary for any parent to watch let alone anyone else!!
I cannot understand the lack of fear these kids seem to have!
It's depressing what these poor excuses for children are doing these days.... happy slapping, 'happy chicken'... it's only a matter of time before they start filming each other pushing strangers in front of oncoming cars.
The thing is it will end in deaths...because they are posting these films on the internet in 'Jackass' style so other youths are going to extreme lengths to shock even more...it is not like being the most fearless in the school playground it is quite literally in the world!!
The internet has a large part to play in this....the sites who encourage youngsters to upload footage ought to be closed down....it is becoming...'extreme you've been framed' and yes I agree with you RichD it will ultimately end up with complete strangers being involved/put at risk...
Run them over... that will teach them

Except railway trespass
http://www.trackoff.org/legal.html says:
TRESPASS
Most people believe trespass to be a minor misdemeanour. In fact, outside of the railway environment, trespass is largely a civil rather than a criminal offence. Within the railway environment Parliament has decided, with very good reason, that trespassing on or near railway lines is a criminal offence.
The penalty for an act of criminal trespass on the railways is a maximum fine of £1,000
To the public, trespass doesn't sound very serious. In the environment of the railway trespassers expose themselves, rail staff and passengers to serious danger with, all too often, tragic consequences.
DragonofAna 19-08-2005, 00:14 I know times change but this game of chicken was around when I was a kid and we are talking over a couple of decades here. It aint great. Its dangerous. That was the whole point - a bit like bonfire leaping.
As adults we can see how crazy these activities are. There are worse - or were worse in those days.
Cars are faster now - though not by much, and many is the time I was hit by a car as a kiddie, but I was lucky.
Do not know why we did it then. Do not know why they do it now. But it is not something new. Nor is it likely to go away.
