View Full Version : Suggestions for future camp meets.
We have a camp meet coming up as many of you will know, the thread is being swamped with suggestions and it's starting to look a little disorganised and off putting for anyone that wants to come along as a first timer.
Can we please put any site recomendations or ideas about how we want future meets to be run here, so it doesn't put anybody off the one we already have planned:thumbsup::thumbsup:
melthebell 14-01-2009, 19:10 plenty of camp sites around here :)
couple of good uns near scarborough, then theres whitby, runswick bay, hinderwell, staithes
good for the walkers group too with the clevelend way :)
Agent Orange 14-01-2009, 19:12 I fancy something down in the New Forest... not sure what campsites they have down there, but it would be great if we could get a meet sorted for the summer. Maybe a 4 dayer. Hire a minibus and we are sorted

I was going to suggest a minibus for some meets, fewer and fewer of us have transport it would seem and it makes trips out during the day simpler too:thumbsup:
*Peaches* 14-01-2009, 19:15 Could I come and stay in a hotel :hihi: I don't *do* tents
Jabberwocky 14-01-2009, 19:18 Top O Bardon hill!

sumayyah 14-01-2009, 19:20 i love to camp, have a tent and all the gear but sadly it comes with a 3 and a half year old so will probebly give your meet ups a miss
EdnaKrabappe 14-01-2009, 19:23 I'd like to go to the Lake District at some point this year. Used to go quite a bit and not been for ages! Ambleside is lovely.

As that's probably called a Pony and we really don't want you to bring the forum name into disrepute, will a beer do? I'm buying? :)
waxonwaxoff 14-01-2009, 19:24 bobby bees in hummanby near brid. I love that site.

I think there are some with kids or am I wrong?
If not post a family meet. We might join you with our 4.
Could I come and stay in a hotel :hihi: I don't *do* tents
I went to the Robin Hood's bay meet last April and stayed in a lovely B & B - I don't "do" tents either!! :hihi:
Agent Orange 14-01-2009, 19:56 Oh my... lots to answer lol.
Mojo: the minibus thing is a great idea. As you say, it would make organising and trips more convenient and would probably be cheaper for the longer distance journeys :)
Peaches: we often, in most cases, camp near pockets of civilisation never too far from a b&b/hotel.
Cloudy: no idea what you mean :suspect: If you are buying then I'm drinking :hihi:
Sumayyah: as mentioned by shiesh, kids are welcome. She has brought her brood to the last two forum camp meets so we are definitely kid friendly. Same applies to you wax, more than welcome to come and bring the brood
Jabberwocky 14-01-2009, 19:58 Where's the fun in that then?
The fun will be in seeing you wimpy city folk trying to survive a night... an HOUR up that hill! :D

EdnaKrabappe 14-01-2009, 20:46 A bit ahead of myself but Stockton fringe festival? Free festival and there is a campsite within walking distance. Wanted to go last year but noone wanted to play. :(
As a relatively new one would love to come with 13 year old (she does not know yet but can sell it as a Ndubz concert ) Anywhere would be fine aslong as we can get there by public transport...

A few of the sites I know have public transport for at least three quarters of the journey and I'm sure arrangements can be made to collect you from the nearest bus stop can be made. If we run this with minibuses as suggested earlier then it really won't be an issue anyway.
The more interest we can get in this the better:thumbsup:
Thats ace !!! we will be at bustop tomorrow.. oh forgot what time of year are you planning this -not that is matters as are holidaying at home this year.

Mojo or Agent Orange will correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect that this thread is purely to collate ideas about sites and meets. The actual camping meet threads will be started seperately and individually.

Absolutely, but it's also a good place to inquire about the logistics of getting there if you are interested in coming along.
Also it's the place to ask any questions about how the meets are run and what to expect in general from them.
At present the meet threads themselves are in the evenings out section as we don't really have any where else to put them, so keep your eyes peeled:thumbsup:
arachnophobe 14-01-2009, 23:28 The minibus idea is a good one- I would deffo be up for contributing if there were a few of us without transport .
stupid question but where can I find evening out section?

me too as I cant drive but can read a mean map or alternatively tell left from right!
sTaGeWaLkEr 14-01-2009, 23:58 All I would say guys (and I realise I may be Mr Unpopular here) is that we should perhaps try and keep this thread free of 1-2-1 chatter as much as is possible.
If we don't, there's a likelihood that it will get quite clogged pretty quickly, and no-one enjoys wading through pages of pointless 1-2-1 chat to get to the info they want. There are four million other threads on the forum if 'off-topic' is your bag.
Let's try and keep it to discuss future camp meets and sites - as per the thread title. Hopefully we'll have a camping and caravanning group soon, so it would probably make sense not to be putting all your eggs into this particular basket. :)
If you make it down South, I might even come. New Forest is lovely! But when it gets to bed time I'll be sneaking off to the hotel down the road.....
One think I have been mulling over for a laugh would be a back packing camp meet for a long weekend, with a minibus back up driver for those that might need it.
I think it would be fun and we might be able to coax some of the walking group along too.
Any thoughts?
sTaGeWaLkEr 15-01-2009, 00:08 Is anyone a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club?
I hear they're pretty clued up on good sites...
I'm probably going to join at some point but wondered if anyone already was and if so, what do you think of it?
hitch_1980 15-01-2009, 00:10 Actually the one to one chat can be great fun to read, if a bit odd sometimes :) ......my suggestion is pick a campsite near a beach, that way the opportunities to have fun are endless :) ooooorrrr how about shalets that houses about 20 or more people in bunk beds?

They wouldn't allow a group such as ours they tend to be over priced and are far from the best sites around.
hitch_1980 15-01-2009, 00:11 Then people who hate tents can come if its a shalet kind of building
arachnophobe 15-01-2009, 00:14 They wouldn't allow a group such as ours they tend to be over priced and are far from the best sites around.
Not for the likes of us then? :(
Not for the likes of us then? :(
A lot of the caravan club sites are small members only sites now the ones that aren't rarely allow groups as they have regular members with permanent pitches that want peace and quiet.
Quite a few have less than a dozen pitches.
arachnophobe 15-01-2009, 00:16 me too as I cant drive but can read a mean map or alternatively tell left from right!
I think there are quite a few non-drivers who normally get lifts so it may be arranged!
hitch_1980 15-01-2009, 00:17 I expect road signs also may help :)
how about a nice warm comfy hotel meet instead .? much better than pretending to be Swampy and his scruffy mates in tents. a bit of luxury goes a long way.

aww, petal you're missing the point. We camp because we love camping. If you want a hotel meet then arrange one, this is for the campers among us.;)
Oh and if this is a lame attempt at getting me and Slickwitch into a sleazy hotel for the night you'll have to try harder!:hihi:

Struggle?! In all our trips we have only experienced two people who struggled with their tents. We are professional campers, we are :P

Where's the fun in that? I had years of that whilst I was serving so anything that reminds me of a barrack block, I will be staying clear of.
Another suggestion.... North Wales.
*Peaches* 15-01-2009, 08:54 Distance with having no transport is my main issue
Agent Orange 15-01-2009, 08:56 Distance with having no transport is my main issue
All will be sorted, future meets of a certain distance will be serviced by a minibus, or least that is what we are planning. Hire a 12 seater for the weekend, split the cost of hire and fuel between the occupants and it's sorted.
*Peaches* 15-01-2009, 08:59 Great! I'd best start saving then :hihi:

I'm a member, Mojo is right, in that for group camping like ours have been, they'd throw us off after an hour.. they arent big on noise, tend to enforce curfews, etc..
However, it does let you access a number of exclusive sites.. I usually stay on a couple up in Scotland, and for a quiet get away they are great.. Ive not found them to be any more or less expensive than any other site..
Agent Orange 15-01-2009, 09:49 Another suggestion would be to find a decent site that allows fires. I know we have looked into this before, but I would love for us to be able to sit around a decent fire in an evening. Anyone know of any sites that allows fires?
steelhead31 15-01-2009, 10:27 Im pretty sure this site does at Buxton, http://www.knotlowfarm.co.uk/ .. though only with a firebucket, which If I remember, they can provide anyway.. could give them a call and find out though..

bobby bees in hummanby have firebaskets to hire. Every night he comes round on his truck with fire baskets and wood to see who wants one.

Okie dokie. Rather than being beneficial for the group, maybe it's something I can look at for myself then.
Cheers for that guys.
My sister used a site at Fraisthorpe which is a few steps away from the sea. It's a really nice quiet spot - although I don't know what the pub facilities are like.

Mardy bum:P Haddock and moi enjoyed a few camping trips together, and with friends, last year-it was fun, and if I can manage to erect a tent, anyone can!
The word "erect" makes me giggle though, I still haven't got over that:hihi:
sumayyah 15-01-2009, 12:41 golden sands caravan park ( near ripley/alfreton - junction 28 m1 )has plenty of space for camping and we had fires on there too
they also have electrical hook up points
( im annoying i know but can only go to sites with electric hook up due to my wee girls medical equipment )
oh and they have a hot tub you can rent for a tenner an hour, wonder how many forummers it will hold :)
melthebell 15-01-2009, 18:59 heh cant believe this has been moved to going out IN SHEFFIELD, as the whole points for sheffielders to go somewhere else NOT IN SHEFFIELD :P

SpiderPete 18-02-2009, 12:43 Would be nice if we went camping around 13th and 14th June, its my birthday weekend and we could get a bit drunk, for a change. :)
Agent Orange 18-02-2009, 13:10 Lots of good suggestions here, but not many sites mentioned. Anyhow, I am proposing we have a meet down in the New Forest mid to late summer. Again, we can hire a van and enjoy a 3 or 4 dayer there with a couple of trips to the south coast thrown in. Depending on the number, we could get everyone in the van along with equipment. Would be a damn site cheaper than going down in individual cars etc.

Depending on the time of year you don't need much more than a tent, a roll mat and a sleeping bag plus whatever you'd normally need for a weekend.
Loo roll and wet wipes always come in handy, but usually between us we can cater for anything else you'd need for a first time trip rather than you forking out money for the gear. The early and late season meets require a little bit more, but if you fancy coming along on one of those we can let you know what you'll need.
Try it and see what you think:)

Oh right , thought about say a kettle gas hob etc. Ive often wondered about camping holidays, even say in blackpool but only really ever been in guest house, caravan etc. thanks for help.:)
Grim Reaper 18-02-2009, 19:33 Would it be possible to have camp meet that is adults only, in the same way as pub meets are?
I ask this as I was going to attend one last year but I didn't as I found out that there would be kids present.
I take my kids away a couple of times a year but as I'm a single parent I occasionally need some space.
I would prefer a meet where I can be away from kids, mine or not. As a responsible adult, I do not wish to completely inhibit my behaviour because someone else's children are in the immediate group.
Thanks

If your planning on heading out alone a small stove and a kettle are a must, if you come with the group there a few dotted round already...
... I CAN'T go without coffee first thing.:hihi::hihi:

Can understand your circumstances, me personally it wouldnt bother me with the kids, it can be fun with them sometimes:hihi:

I understand too but you really don't have to worry about your behaviour ....as a parent of the kids that attended last years meets... I actually was probably the most badly behaved !! :o
The kids spent most of the time off playing or watching DVD's they're not constantly under your feet but if you choose not to come along for that reason then fine ...but I would recommend you try it though rather than miss out !!

Hopefully we can organise enough meets to encompass open to all and adult only meets this year, I think catering for different groups will be valuable to making this a success.
Personally I'm quite happy either way and will just have to attend them all:D
Bring on the vodka:thumbsup:
czechroman 18-02-2009, 20:20 Everyone likes different types of holidays. Me personally id like to go with kids there, it can be fun i think and they can make the holiday sort of. However i dont have any kids so maybe if i did i wouldnt be saying that!:hihi:

Age group - well I am 40+ and go on as many as I can, age is just a number :)
Agent Orange 19-02-2009, 13:32 To all you camping peeps. Just endured Wilkos and discovered some snazzy and useful equipment which is very reasonably priced. Might be worth looking into if you want some bits and bobs before the big outing.

A whole manner of things ranging from tents (wouldnt touch em as they would probably fall to pieces), sleeping bags, air beds and pumps, self inflating air beds, camp chairs, picnic tables, lanterns, head torch type things, cooking stoves, pots and pans and all the rest of it.

only laid on an air bed once and i was rolling off it:hihi:, wouldnt use them again, sleeping bags yes. Theres some 'tunnel' type tents on ebay that look ok, whether they are is another matter.

I am not a fan of air beds, you only need a inflating mat and a sleeping bag ontop of that, or you can buy both combined together, which I have and its very warm.
Decathlon at the bottom of the moor is a great place for camping stuff, although I might have a walk into wilkinsons.
Tents, if its for 1 person, always buy one which is for 2/3 people, you will have alot more room in it. :)

Thats a big one, if its just for 1 person then this is better, it takes 5 mins to put up, peg down etc etc.

Its a different story putting it back together again, but thats the fun of camping.

Oh yeah just saw that 1 and thought itd be spacious. That 1 you show says comfortable for 2 so thatd probs be ideal:)
EdnaKrabappe 20-02-2009, 11:21 To all you camping peeps. Just endured Wilkos and discovered some snazzy and useful equipment which is very reasonably priced. Might be worth looking into if you want some bits and bobs before the big outing.
I called in the Rotherham one yesterday and got a few bits. I needed an airbed pump. Stoves and butane were quite cheap... might finally invest in one although i like the going out for meals aspect.
Also I bought one of those solar posts for £3, thought it might be handy for going back to my tent late at night and avoiding the guide ropes.
steelhead31 20-02-2009, 11:26 Id really love to try camping, dont have any gear or anything, is it just a case bring a tent?:D:)
If you fancy trying the camping before purchasing a load of gear, I have pretty much a complete spare set, including one of the aforementioned pop-up tents, I could bring along for you to try..
sTaGeWaLkEr 20-02-2009, 11:55 I've also got a double blow up bed type thing if you need to try it before you buy one.

Check at Jet garages, I got a tyre pump that fits in the car cig lighter for about a fiver with some petrol, and it's got different nozzles for bike tyres, etc. It's tops for airbeds!

Cheers Feargal. I got one of those from Wilkinsons but it was £6.99 so yours is a saving! :)
