The South Sea at Broomhill is offering a free bowl of steaming hot soup and a roll to all its customers. Just buy a pint of lager, bitter or pop. This is available Monday to Friday from opening till closing while stocks last.
Coming soon is our fabulous carvery that will operate every day from midday. Priced at £3.95 Monday to Friday and £4.95 Saturday and Sunday, there will be a choice of 2 meats and 6 vegetables available. In addition there will be daily specials of Chilli, Lasagne, Mousaka etc.
Beer prices are just as good with Bitter at £1.80 and lager £2.00 or a bottle of house wine for £5.00 up to 6 o'clock Monday to Friday. Enjoy.
Ousetunes 14-01-2009, 10:50 What beers are on tap?
Good idea foodwise.
NB. Since relocating our business away from Barber Road, the only thing I miss about that place is going in the Hadfield. Hope all's working out well for you in the South Sea!
Will have to pop in and try the carvery soon, sounds good; and not seen you for a while either!

We have John Smiths Smooth and two cask ales. One is always Black Sheep and we rotate the other one. Standard lagers, Fosters and Carling.
Thanks for your support. The Hadfield was a great place until the rent went through the roof!!
eckingtonboy 14-01-2009, 13:53 Are you a pub co or free house?, shame pubs have to sell john smiths smooth its such an awfull drink!
food sounds good.. though
There are cask ales in South Sea? Last time I went in there were none (this was 6 months ago though).
exhausted 15-01-2009, 10:49 The South Sea has 2 cask ales available. Always Blacksheep and we rotate the second one regularly.

The South Sea is Leasehold. Not one of the big pub companies.
eckingtonboy 15-01-2009, 12:57 Leasehold from a pub co?
what made you choose blacksheep, why not a nice local micro:)?, are you a member of the Locale ale scheme
Wow... so that's the 2nd pub in Broomhill offerring free grub. There are advantages to the credit crunch (as long as you still have a job and can afford a pint)!

We lease The South Sea from a Pub Company called Trust Inns. They have about 900 pubs across the country, a relatively small amount compared to the likes of Punch and Enterprise.
We are members of Camra and thanks for telling us a bout the local ale scheme. We will be making inquiriesto see if it can work for us. We chose Blacksheep because it was the most popular one at another place I had and people seem to know the brand . We have also tried Bombadier, Adnams, Greenking IPA. WE are tied on beers from Trust and they had a limited range of cask beers in their portfolio hopefully this will change soon.
eckingtonboy 16-01-2009, 09:51 Agh ic, hope it works for you :)

It can be difficult to get local ale from the Pub Co's....most refuse to stock local ales on their standard beer list thinking customers prefer the better known National brands..
I am anxious that ALL quality local ales in each region SHOULD be available through the various Pub Co's to local pubs, because they tend to get pushed out of the Pub Co distribution schemes.......some local brewers cannot get their foot in the door with Pub Co's at all, so are totally reliant on free-houses and pubs with free lines to sell their local ales..Punch Taverns for example won't give us access to ANY local ales at the Dove unless they add them to their Finest cask special list, which does not happen very often...
..one day this monopoly will be ended!!!
eckingtonboy 16-01-2009, 13:50 depends if the pub co is a member of Siba DDS
bluecanary 17-01-2009, 15:57 Have you recently taken over the South Sea? Was in around 6 months ago (whilst waiting for a curry from Manzil's) and have to say it was dire (the pub, not the curry). No cask ale, and the place stank of damp. Needless to say, it was almost empty, apart from a wasted uni sports team in one corner.
Putting on a couple of real ales is definitely a move in the right direction,a nd you can't go wrong with free food! Good luck!

that is my take on the pub too. i've even read about the team(s) it sponsors giving it the swerve too?
maybe time to give it a second chance.
clawfingers 18-01-2009, 14:19 south sea gotta be the naffest pub eva....
Jesus, The south Seas is still open? Memories of seeing that place deserted 24/7 following the new management takeover and seemingly 'anti-student' policy from the new owners. Surprised it has managed to last this long.

its not bad nowadays, the grub is ten times better than i remember it ever been and the staff seemed more friendly and dare i say it, cleaner! they are turning the place around, like a lot of the pubs in that area they are improving, which has to be a good thing.
