What does a Mayor do ?

In the States the Mayor of a town has a LOT to say, he's/she's involved in the politics of the town, they have to last say in everything from speed bumps to pay raises.

I was wondering what kind of PULL they have in the UK, if any.

They meet with the councillors, but a lot of it is ceremonial, atlhough they are in charge of local authority politics in some way.

The mayor of London has a much more influential job.

In Sheffield the Mayor has a ceremonial role as an ambassador and basically acts as 'the face of Sheffield' at events etc.

The Mayor makes no political decisions although they chair the full meetings of Council. The convention is that they stay completley out of party politics during their year in office.

In fact Lord Mayors of Sheffield did'nt even vote in Council, up until Labour decided to use the Lord Mayors vote when the Council was hung (no group had a majority) a few years ago.
