My niece just called me panicking.

As you know she rescued a 2yr old westie last week and had it microchipped. The microchip had to be done twice as the first time it wasnt in properly. This caused the dog severe pain and distress. The 2nd time the vet stuck the needle in she had it was in properly.

Tonight my niece was stroking her and noticed it was half sticking out of her skin!!!!! She touched it but Sally yelped.:(
Maybe she shouldnt have phoned the vets cos it wasnt exactly a major emergency but she did because she was panicking, anyway the vet said pull it out and re-visit in the morning to check the wound and have it re-done!!

My niece quickly pulled it out (Sally yelped) and then my niece bathed the 'hole' it had left on her back in water with a tiny bit of salt in it. Although this might seem minor my niece was crying on the phone. She has dogs and cats already who are all microchipped and she has never had this happen before so she is upset at having to put sally through pain :(. She is quite squirmish so to see it sticking out of her skin with blood really upset her.

She doesnt know whether to have her -redone tomorrow or not. What also concerns my niece is that the micro chip seemed quite far down her back. Although the vet said it was ok.

Anyone had this happen before? Would you have it redone tomorrow or wait a few weeks? or not have it re-done at all?

Thanks

If sally has been bathed and groomed since having the chip in this may have caused it to work it's way out. I think they aren't supposed to be bathed for 48hrs after chipping to give the nick time to heal.

I would contact someone like Gemima on here she does chipping and is very competant when it comes to doing this kind of thing. I don't like vets doing them, they don't get enough practise compared to people like the RSPCA and local groomers.

Hi Adz,

She took her back today and had it re-done. She didnt know they weren't supposed to be groomed after :( She took her the same day, but we did tell the vet and she never said anything :( Oh well, she is back now, lets hope this one stays in!

a micro chip shouldn't do that even if groomed as should be well under the skin.

If the microchip is inserted properly (which is deep into the subcutaneous muscle) then it should never come back out of the skin! It obviously wasnt inserted correctly and was just under the skin. It is a good thing that it has come out, because if it had remained under the skin and not in the muscle then it could have travelled anywhere in the body and would not have been detected.

Edited to add that the chip (once in the muscle) is vunerable for the first seven days, so grooming, bathing can dislodge it and cause it to shift within the muscle. After the seven days it is usually fine as the muscle contracts and holds onto the chip

I can remember taking one of the rain dogs for the day i told rain i would bath her and she told me not to as she had only just had her chip in that day and all the stimulation etc. and water could cause the chip to dislodge.

I remember when I had my dog microchipped at an event,My dog had to be chipped for a second time because the chip got stuck inside the needle but the person who did it woz great very reassuring and gave lots of aftercare advice and even a information sheet should i have any problems.

Depending on how badly matted he is, it might be necessary to take him to the vet, so he can be sedated and all the mats shaved off. This happened with one of my hairy, rescue cats - the mats were so thick it would have been impossible (to say nothing of really painful) to comb them out.
