View Full Version : 2 computers from one broadband connection and
hi, im wondering if i can have two pcs from one 1mb bt broadband connection?
also can anyone tell me what i would need and how much this would cost (roughly)
thanks :)
Yes, you need a router, depending on what Broadband you have, either an ADSL modem router, or a cable router, both are max £70ish and then 2 network cards if you dont already have them, unless you want to go wireless then you need a wireless router, and some wireless adapters.
Have a look on www.ebuyer.com for what you need :)

depends how u wnat to do it.
bt or who ever can supply a modem to connect to 2 pc's but usually the monthly amount is £20+.otherwise have broadband installed & buy a modem router set up, pc world have a dlink with remote usb dongle that allows loads of pcs for £79.
installation is not as easy as the book says but mine were up & running in 45 minutes .
u can the have cheapest broadband * still run 2 pcs.
(i have 2 pc's plus a laptop connected to 1mb)
Couple on ebuyer (have a shop around, and be warey of PC World, I.E make sure you know what you want before you go, they tend to have a habit of just guessing what you want and selling you the wrong thing at an extreme price)

SpiderPete 13-06-2005, 17:04 We have 2 pc`s running through a Voyager 205 router from BT.... although I would be interested to hear what people think or a wireless router...... what are the advantages of one ? <excuse me I am a bit thick on this topic>
We are experiencing problems at the moment where we keep getting cut off and then re-connects, have to pluck up enough courage to spend ages on BT`s helpdesk phone line, as I am sure they will blame everything except themselves. :(
Don't listen to technical support, they're dumb morons who could know more technically support you than I could sprout wings and fly to the sodding moon :loopy:
Sadly I find that to be the case for most of the major ISPs though, AOL's techies are complete retards, and they don't speak any English, and no I don't have anything against Indians apart from the fact that being deaf, I can't understand their annoyingly baffling accents.
drolnhoj 13-06-2005, 17:46 You do not even really need a router. if you have two network cards in the PC that connects to the internet then you can connect a second PC to the first via a simple crossed over cable between the network card in the 2nd PC and the spare network card in the 1st PC. If you have Windows XP it explains how to do it in the help pages. It even shows diagrams of the connections. Crossed over cables and the spare network card can be purchased from most computer stores.

So do we; when we had ADSL, we had a Belkin router with built-in modem, 2x PCI WLAN cards, and a PCMCIA card for the lappy. Now we have NTL, we just bought a Netgear router, and set-that up.

True, the only downside is that the PC with the internet connection on it has to be on for the others to be able to access the net, and ICS is pretty pap really.
