women could never match men at darts as they cant drink as much ,so would no be able to compete . ok many women have Beer Bellys but how would they manage to play a darts match against a man when they would have to leave to cook the tea and watch the soaps.:P

Men tend to be better at certain spatial tasks, and are generally more accurate than women in target-directed motor skills, such as guiding or intercepting projectiles. (of course open to debate) *

Of course this doesn't mean every woman against every man. But if you mixed sports where the outcome is always based on individuals, then it would be unfair.

Mixed Tennis is an example. I've never seen mixed snooker or darts, other than in the pubs/halls.

I think you have to be physically challenged in terms of attractiveness to be a sucessful darts or snooker player.

Let the guys win on that one, I say.

Anastasia Dobromyslova-Martin was the womens BDO darts champion last year. She played Wayne Mardle before christmas, the PDC number 8 and only lost 5-4. Its fair to say she can hold her throw.

I don't know who James Wade is, but I have seen soccer am. Not intentionally mind, but only when around stinky boys who put it on.

I'm guessing Helen chamberlin is the attractive blonde, and James Wade is an attractive darts player (?)

Well I suppose there are always exceptions.

You win. :)

When comparing the abilities of a male over female, I can see one advantage i hold for males, I'm the best at doing absolutely nothing for long periods of time, no women can beat that.

James Wade is the PDC number 2 and Helen is that blond chick. He actually looks like a proper geek but doesnt have a beer gut.

One of the big factors is that they don't play.
When your in the pub, you see a lot more men playing snooker/pool. Its the same in snooker/pool clubs too.

Isnt a lot of it based on the evolutionary process?

For example women are generally better at communicating and being in touch with peoples feelings because traditionally they have spent their time at home taking care of the families.

Men have developed as said earlier better spatial skills through having to go out and hunt for food and then all the manual crafts they used to do to earn their family a crust.

There must be one olympic sport women are better at though?

Maybe because the establishment is run by men? Maybe it would be an affront to their masculinity to be seen to be beat by a female...men are VERY protective of their masculinity.

The other question you have to ask is...do women wish to compete with men? I would say yes...they do in almost all other spheres

How will they ever know if all they compete against is their own gender. If a woman runs against a woman all her sporting life, how would she ever know her potential?

I think its archery or shooting, there only one person who's achieved a 100% score in the event and it was a woman. When I remember her name I'll post it here

Some may say that men are superiour to women on a physical and mental basis rather than men and women being just plain different. That's why women have struggled for as long as you wish to go back.

And still struggling against this ideal btw.

Perhaps they are more concerned with being able to write legible sentences than playing darts and snooker? :hihi:

There are some sports where women will never be able to compete on a level playing field (so to speak) with men e.g. sports where success is dependant on greater general size and muscle mass. But there are others where it certainly is feasible, and only time will tell. The most notable example at the moment is probably horse racing, where female jockeys regularly compete against and beat males.

What people often overlook is that womens' sport is still in it's infancy. Women were not allowed to participate in track distances of more than 1,000m until 1967, because professional athletic associations thought they would be physically unable to cover longer distances, let alone run competitive times (even against other women). The support networks male athletes often take for granted (encouragement, financial support, competitive tournaments) are often simply not available for female athletes, meaning they are far more likely to have to hold down full-time jobs whilst training and competing, thus aren't able to devote the same amount of time to training as males. Never mind the (not inevitable but all too common) lack of support from family, schools etc which means they may have to support themselves emotionally as well as financially.

Both sexes have certain natural physiological advantages- for example men in muscle mass and lung capacity, women in flexibility, balance, proprioception and general co-ordination.

There are a number of sports where men and women could potentially genuinely compete against each other, but whether they ever will or not remains to be seen... :)

I would say the only Olympic sport where women compete on an equal footing (and are equally as successful) are the equestrian disciplines, and even then mainly eventing and dressage. Show-jumping still seems to be male dominated largely.
This is true of equestrian sports in the wider world as well, except of course for NH and flat racing.

How about inventing a Domestic Olympics for women, making competitive sports out of activities like cleaning the house, cooking your husband's tea and washing up?

You are kidding, aren't you? There are more female apprentices these days (hardly any conditionals though), and a few are starting to make a name (Amy Baker probably being the latest), but pro-female jocks/those who are only claiming 3lbs* are still finding it really difficult to get mounts. For example, they're often seen to be much weaker in a finish.

That's what makes Hayley Turner's achievement of 100 wins in a calendar year at a strike rate of about 16/17% so remarkable.

*apologies to those who have no idea about arcane horsey speak
