For me it has to be CineWorld

The staff seem geniunely nice (not because they have to be) & polite, the place is always clean, I like the variety of time the films are shown unlike other cinemas & most importantly it is very pleasant & welcoming. Only other cinema that has matched up to this is the Showroom in the city centre but the only down side is the limitation of films they show & the times they are shown.

Meadowhall Cinema, it is not too bad a tad expensive. The rooms are not that big & how dark are the rooms before the film actually comes on, I know we all want to cut back because of the credit crunch but you could easily get lost in there it is that dark.

Odeon :rant::rant::rant: do not even get me started on that place.

Last time I went it was 75p for a film. At the Gaumont. Disgraceful prices, I won't go back.:hihi:

Yep. Queueing up outside, and the queue went up that alleyway at the side of it, so only the most eager viewers.. got rained on:hihi:.

It was the Classic I think. Don't think I ever went there. Just before my time.

I remember Wigfalls burning down though. (which is random:hihi::hihi:)

The Odeon on Leicester Square is my favourite, but I guess we're talking Sheffield, so Cineworld - its the only one I go to as I have an Unlimited card.

I have to say Cineworld as they pay my wages :)

Cineworld.

It's the little things. I rarely go to the others to be fair but I went to the odeon the other day and it's the little things. It's miles to a toilet. The Nachos taste rank. There is no cup holder. When the person in the seat in front of your lifts their seat it affects any belongings you've got in front of you. The back of the seat is small so there's really nowhere to put your coat.

To put a more positive note on it I like having a nearby toilet, nice nachos, somewhere to put my drink and my coat and to not accidentally catch the person in front, at the side of me every time i move. and i loved the film at the odeon!

I also think for a big place they do quite well on showing some lesser known films and we are also lucky to have the showroom as well. We are quite well off for cinema here in Sheff.

I remember the old Gaumont near the City Hall and the ABC on Angel Street (?) through a misty haze: huge screens, multi-levels and old school usherettes with ice-cream trays. I saw Ghostbusters at the Gaumont, and Footloose at the ABC.

My favourite Sheffield cinemas were the old Odeon on Burgess Street, closely followed by the UCI at Crystal Peaks. I use the Odeon in my neck of the woods these days.

UCI is now a larger Sainsburys Hecate. They moved downstairs and Sainsburys is now a Next!

I saw those two films at those two cinemas. Infact if memory serves me rightly, Footloose was the first film I was allowed to go and see at night in Sheffield with friends, a moment of passage! (Had to go to Rotherham as it was safer :loopy: before that)
Ghostbusters, - I'd fancied this lad for donkeys. We finally went out and he was rubbish at kissing so instead of going to meet him, I went with my mates to see Ghostbusters instead. Ah the fickleness of young love.

I prefer Cineworld, even though Odeon's cheaper.

Showroom is the best by far. Classy building inside and out showing original films.

Mine has got to be the ABC on Angel Street before it got demolished in 1987/1988. The cinemas these days have no character or atmosphere, the multiplexes are terrible, its just like visiting a mcdonalds with a cheap fake plasticky feel to it. The cineworld multiplex can only hold about about 700 people and am sure i read somewhere that it only has a 20ft screen. The ABC held over 1300, and its screen was a massive 60ft!!! I also read that the ABC sound system was capable of doing structural damage if turned up to its max (Christ knows what sound system they used) So i should say that all the cinemas these days have took a few steps back with screen size, seating size and tacky interiors.
I hope these type of cinemas come back, instead of the toy town ones we have now.

The Showroom.

Quirky films, particularly foreign ones, rather than the usual Yank "blockbusters".

Because of the above, minimal, if any kids messing about.

I used to love the Gaumont when I was a kid, and the Classic in Fitzalan Square. :)

From my youth The Gaumont, though I always used to look the listings of "adult films" on at Studio 5-6-7 and wondered if I'd pass for over 18 (I was 13 at the time!).

In modern times we tend to prefer the Showroom as there's less riff raff about playing with their mobiles, though it can be a bit snooty and the bar's full of the very shallow and superficial types I abhor.

I've always thought it would be fun to go to this place. (http://www.thekinemainthewoods.co.uk/) It's out in the wilds of Lincolnshire - anyone ever been?

Shame. It was always just a bog-standard multiplex with tiny little screens, but I had fond memories of it. Last film I saw there, I think, was the first Home Alone, so that must've been 1990ish. ETA: Oooh, no it wasn't. It was that Robin Williams monstrosity Hook!

i have to say that the showroom is my favourite.

i like the range of less mainstream films they show and the way they have themed mini-seasons (although it does mean i sometimes want to spend my monthly going out budget in a week!).

but if im totally honest, the best thing about the showroom is its size. at the risk of sounding like my mum, new cinemas are just tooooooo big and loud! i dont like walking in the dark to my seat, im paranoid about falling over in front of a packed cinema- no worries like that at the showroom.

i like the more intimate feeling of watching a film on a mid size screen at a sensible sound level, rather than the soulless stack them high policy and booming (occasionally deafening) levels of a multiplex screen.

i do go to the odeon in town too, mainly for convenience (dont want to get trams back home late at night) or depending what theyre showing...but if both cinemas were showing the same film and the same time for the same price, it would definitely still be the showroom for me.

For those of us from the Rotherham side of town, does anyone remember the man who used to pop up on his organ at the Scala?
http://www.kingsdr.demon.co.uk/rotherham/scala.htm#organ
I queued around the corner for Pete's dragon when i was a nipper here.

I was one of the few people who, when the video generation hit and everyone was going horror film crazy, who still went to the cinema. I have really fond memories of going to the canon cinema to see Top Gun, seeing all the Breakdance films there and some kids starting to breakdance at the front.
http://www.kingsdr.demon.co.uk/rotherham/empire.htm#location

And the adverts for Ki-ora "It's just for me and my dog."
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5LvLn9PWln8
And Crusader nuts "Hey Crusader, have you any nuts?" which always made me laugh!
Can't find it but someone has mentioned them here and remembers the same line.

The last film I saw at the old UCI was Dragonheart.

The movie wasn't bad, I just objected to paying £6.80 for the "privelidge" of seeing it! Especially when I'd just paid about 3 quid to sit on the Tram from Malin Bridge for nearly an hour to get there!

Perhaps if you'd shown them your tram ticket they'd have knocked 3 quid off the admission price.

I agree with you there. I went to see Madagascar II with my daughter and not only was it expensive it was like sitting in my own front room...very small indeed.

For me its cineworld everytime. An all round
