Shell are running a promotion at the minute whereby if you fill up with Shell Optimax you receive a pack of 6 Dream Car trading cards. Collect all 24 different cards and you can win 1 of 6 of the dream cars which are up for grabs.

I've managed to get hold of 23 of the 24 and just need the Lotus Exige Performance 2d card.

If anyone gets this card and wants to part ways with it, (for cash if needs be!!) I would be most grateful. :D

Get filling up people, Optimax is great for your car! :hihi:

Out of curiosity rather than to start an argument (which inevitably it probably will), but why is Optimax 'better' for your cars than ordinary unleaded?

Extra "ingredients" are put into the petrol, which do stuff. Sorry I cant be more technically specific, but im sure that someone else will post with the specific details.

Its a bit like water in certain areas where some water gets treated with things like fluoride and other stuff etc.

Yeah, but is the extra cost justified in terms of performance and engine life? I am dubious as to wether it is.

Just about all petrol companies have these magic ingrediants that clean the engine. Some companies just use it more for advertising than others.

What you basically get is a bit of RedX added the the fuel.

These ingrediants aren't always a good idea.
My first motor was a mark one astra (about 12 year old when I had it). Decided to treat it to some proper oil (Castrol GTX). GTX has a detergent that takes any crap in the system, converts it to a foam which is then thrown out through the weakest escape route (in my case the air filter).
It just looked like the stuff you get when the head gasket goes. Asked a mate whos dad runs a scrap yard to look out for another cheap motor or an engine. His dad told him that I had just changed the oil etc (which the mate didn't know about).
Happens that the chemicals took the remains of the previous oil (Asda super strenght :) ) as been muck and spat it out.
Dropped the GTX and replaced with the Asda stuff and it ran fine again.

While we're on the subject of 'premium' fuels, I've been told that the BP equivalent has a 'best before' date, and can make things worse if you put a tankful in and don't use it within a couple of months.

The main thing with Optimax is that it has a higher RON (Research Octane Number) of 98 opposed to that of standard unleaded which is 95 RON.

Particularly useful if you've got an older classic car thats designed to run on higher octane fuels.

There is petrol out there with a higher RON rating than Optimax now, I will be trying it out soon to see if it makes a difference to my R series.

Optimax fuel will make a difference if you have a performace car, the higher octaine is not just a gimmick. Not much point in putting it in your 1.4 10year old Skoda mind, unless your feeling flush!

As for the cards, I think you may find that the Lotus is the one everyone needs!! Good luck tho, if you have many others duplicates can I have a few??

Indeed, there were only 40 of the Lotus ones printed... so basically that one card alone is worth £60,000 and I can't imagine anyone would part with it.

lol - the "for money if necessary" made me smile. I was thinking that it would require something like 30k to make someone part with the card that is at a guess the rare one.

I think anyone would be foolish to accept 30k for one, as you can buy the other 23 on ebay for £20 and then claim a 60k car.

well, i'd have done my research before I sold it for any amount.

Didn't you get the choice of cars from the set of 24? In which case surely everyone will choose the most expensive. Even if they don't want it they can then sell it and buy the car that they did want, plus have the difference in cash.

Indeed, but full marks to npatchett, worth a try.

As there were only 40 of the Lotus cards, it makes you wonder how many of them were thrown in the bin, or will sit in someones glovebox or cupboard for years.

Oh yes it certainly does. I run a high performance car and I can certainly see the difference. Additionally, the 10% lower fuel consumption more than covers the difference in outlay.

I think from what I hear from my fellow car enthusiasts a certain supermarket chain down south is trialling 100RON fuel... Mitsubishi Evo drivers... your day has come!!

99-100 RON and it is Tesco I believe.
