I don't think there ever was a club in King street, I think you've got mixed up on location. You went down steps to the Daisy and the limit and to the underground, none of which were on king street. Most other places you went upstairs to!
Found this. Never heard of it, but it sounds like its in the same area as your search.

Edit to add, sorry this was dixon lane. The ladbrookes point threw mw. Perhaps not the one in that case!

No, that's not it.
what year/s are you thinking of?
King Street is the one opposite the old BHS, or the back of Primark now. (Heron frozen food on the corner)
Jayne
The only other downstairs bar I can think of was on High Street. Was it the Geisha Bar? About where Blacks is now.

Hmmm,I cannot recall any kinda downstairs club in that area, and i'm trying to cover the last 25years.

think rebels is what i was thinking of - didnt it used to be the penthouse before that ? and the revolution ?
What years would this have been Debbie?
The Geisha Bar was the former Crazy Daisy as I remember and subsequently became a Legends.
I can't remember a club at all on King Street and the only clubs I can think of where you went downstairs were the Daisy and the Underground on Charles Street.
astridproll 11-01-2009, 00:23 Might it have been Silks on Bank Street (formerly called Vaultz I think)? The pre-bar for Cairo Jax or Romeo & Juliets. That was in the same area and it was downstairs. Obviously Cairos/Romeos/Baileys/Corporation were all downstairs too :)
It was called Rebels and it was on Dixon lane always a good scrap in there weekends
melthebell 11-01-2009, 11:18 think rebels is what i was thinking of - didnt it used to be the penthouse before that ? and the revolution ?
yeah i believe it was the penthouse....but that was waaay before my time :P
Debbie22 11-01-2009, 13:12 hi all sorry old age has kicked in and it was on Dixon Lane not on King Street, but i still can't remember what the club was called??? i thought you went downstairs but you may have gone upstairs. I thought it was were the ladbrookes bookmakers is or was if it has gone now:loopy::help:
You did have to go upstairs to Rebels I can remember your shoes sticking to the dried blood on the stairs:gag:
iansheff 11-01-2009, 15:22 There was Penthouse on Dixon Lane, Baileys on Bank Street, Top Rank Arundel Gate then there was the Crazy Daisy up High Street, Tiffanys down the bottom of the moor, the Genevieve Charter row and what did they call the one near the Hofenbraus Penny something? Wasn't Rebels next to the skating rink on Queens Road?
Ballyfoy 11-01-2009, 15:24 It was called the Penny Farthing, then went on to be Scamps.
iansheff 11-01-2009, 15:27 Oh and TurnUps at Nether Edge
Ballyfoy 11-01-2009, 15:33 Yes, and fiveways out at Baslow roundabout ( now the moorlands) had to have a car to get out there though.... and also the one under the casino on Eccelsall road south, but that was only open on a Wednesday night ( I think) cant remember the name of that one, was it Shades?
iansheff 11-01-2009, 15:45 Yes it was called Shades
WallBuilder 11-01-2009, 16:15 Rebels entrance was on Dixon Lane through a set of wooden doors then a traipse up a long long flight of stairs.
I think the place originally started off as the Penthouse and then in between Penthouse and Rebelss it had a brief span as Dollars [I think]
Ballyfoy 11-01-2009, 18:15 The one that used to be next to the ice rink was Stars...think i must have spent too much of my youth in these places as I can remember most of them, and it only seems like yesterday.

That used to be samanthas the one on dixon lane was penthouse another
mis spent youth post:hihi:
The one on Charles St. that you used to go downstairs to was called 'Faces' in the eighties. The only other downstairs one's I remember are the Crazy Daisy on High St, Limit on West St, Pig & Whistle on Leopold St and the legendary 'Wap' (Wapentake) on Wellington St.
But it was hard to beat 'Rebels' at the top of Dixon Lane on Saturday Night. I believe the entrance doorway to the stairs leading up is still there beside the entrance to Ladbrokes which is the downstairs of the old 'Burtons' shop which used to be on the corner. Contrary to popular belief there never was much trouble actually in 'Rebels', it was only at turning-out time when all the ten-bob-millionaires from Josephines were on their way home that there was any trouble.
Had many a happy night in Reb's.

Mrs H Solo 12-01-2009, 13:17 It was called the Penny Farthing, then went on to be Scamps.
Oh yes - thats where I used to live.
In Uppers 12-01-2009, 14:52 Legends was on High Street and you used to go downstairs to that - bang opposite HMV now.

Oh yes I had forgotten it was Samanathas before Stars....Crazy daisy was my preferred venue, but really any of them mentioned on here bring back lovely memories, they were all good nights, as I remember...and they all shut at 2.00 at the latest.
blade1000rr 16-01-2009, 17:54 Gotcha now,thanks...

loopylass 16-01-2009, 22:44 Oh and TurnUps at Nether Edge
I remember TurnUps being on Commercial Street where the Chinese (all you can eat) Restaurant is now. Was the first night club I went into when I was 16.
shanes teeth 17-01-2009, 12:29 Shades was under the Greystones cinema before the casino was built.Wednesday night was student night .It was open other nights but I think it was more a soul/reggae type place at the weekends.I'm not going to do that"you could get pi**ed,get into Shades and have chips on the way home and still have change out of £2"thing,but you could get pis......................................etc etc.

I don't think Rebels was known for a 'good scrap at weekends'
I think that was more the trendy places :D
shanes teeth 17-01-2009, 16:04 Who can forget the Penthouse Shuffle-that strange gait you had to adopt as you tried to walk with your feet sticking to the floor as you tried to walk. And how come nobody ever got killed in that regular tumble down that long flight of steps on the way out.
jaynesworld 25-02-2009, 17:08 I'm pretty sure it was Romeo and Juliets on King St. The Crazy Daisy was on High St, just above the old Virgin Records and Rebels was on Dixon Lane.

Geddy Lee 26-02-2009, 11:46 Anyone remember the "Tramps" mens clothes shop on Kings Street from the 70s. You went downstairs to that, so whether that was a club before it was a clothes shop, I know not.

My wife worked on King Street in the 60's and 70's and can't remember any nightclub
bikerbob 28-02-2009, 13:51 Samanthers/Stars,was originally the Heartbeat. Many a great night dancing to motown.
Anyone remember the Gay paris' under the Marples. And no,it wasnt a Gay bar.
That was the first pub I got bladdered in,drinking pernod at the ripe old age of 17.
Never reached a nightclub that night, fell out of pub and a copper put me straight in a taxi.EEEeee!!!!!them wert days.
Yes, the club you are refering to on kings Street was called faces. As you went in through the door you either went:
1, very sharp left down the stairs to the bar and dance floor
2, Straight on the the cloakroom, toilets and second access to the down stair area
3, up the stairs on the right hand side to the wine bar.
Roy and Freddy were the bouncers and they were both top blokes who looked after us ****** up younguns without being too aggresive.
Roy still works on the door at the Ball on Mansfield road and I went to see him recently and he still looks exactly the same after all these years..
The shop called Tramps I think was either directly a the side of faces or was on the same spot. I used to get many of my clothes from there in the seventies..Great times
