View Full Version : Tribute to Sass from CRB
Hi
Spoke to Mick tonight, from CRB, and he informed me there is a accoustic tribue to Sass on Friday 1st July at Cha Chaz.
Should be a really good night.
By the way i'm posting this message drunk, so if i'm wrong...please correct me and forgive me!!
Cheers
Rob
They announced the tribute on July 1st in The Nelson last night and the details you have posted are correct as I heard them.
I will miss this as I will be away on holiday :( Really wanted to attend too. I will spare a thought on the night for the big fella, I missed out on going to the CRB last night, did anybody go and how was the mood there?

The mood was quite down but a lot of CRB regulars wearing their CRB t-shirts. I think everyone enjoyed themselve.

The Acoustic night is going ahead for definite on Friday 1st July At Cha Cha's (next to the Mad Greek restaurant)
We're still collaring some of Sheffields finest to play (there's no escape!) so details to follow. These are all Sass' friends and his favourites so details will follow soon
Sass got leave of absense from the hospital for the last two nights in the CRB, It meant a lot to him to be there. Although he didn't get to realise the dream for a CRB 2 we can best honour his memory by keeping the music scene in Sheffield alive.
His comments on the government/councils plans to kill off live music are largely unprintable but in polite parlance he equated live music with freedom of speech
So........Rock n' Roll over?
NAAAAH!
MuteWitness 13-06-2005, 10:22 is the meet outside the CRB at 7 still going ahead - Andrea mentioned it to me but she was a bit pi**ed

Not heard about this...what is happening ?
MuteWitness 13-06-2005, 10:58 well from what i was told we were meeting at 7 in the CRB carpark to light some candles and have a little drink first.
Dj_Shadowman 13-06-2005, 10:59 I assume that that is planned for the tribute night ?
MuteWitness 13-06-2005, 11:09 sorry i read the date wrong thats actually ment to be this friday!
we certainly were'nt anything approaching sober but idea was to meet up at the old CRB this friday 17th around 7pm onwards and show our respect to Sass at the place we always thought of as 2nd home - as well as the 'official' night at cha cha's on 1st July - Hope to see you all there
If anyone would like to volunteer to write a piece in Beer Matters magazine please PM me - It would be much better written by someone who knew him well and went to the CRB regularly.
I would be gratefull to anyone who can update me on this sad news:(

fox20thc 15-06-2005, 12:19 Who will be going? I have a feeling it may be a tight squeeze in the bar on 1st July.
Classic Rock 15-06-2005, 12:45 From Sarah CRB
So far we've got Eoin Tether from Dead By Friday, Chris And Sue(SOOOOOO!) from Silver Wheel and Treebeard and Bona from Extreme Maggot Infestation to play and a few others unconfirmed yet
Suspect it will be a squeeze
fox20thc 15-06-2005, 12:55 It should be a good night, hope to see a few old faces down there

For anyone who wishes to join the bikers on the funeral run please meet at the Classic Rock Bar- Ecclesall Rd between 12.30 and 1pm on Thursday the 30th of June. To arrive at the John Fairest funeral home, Penistone Rd for 2.30pm when the hearse will set off for Grenoside Crematorium, North Chapel
Huge thanks to everyone taking part in the run, I know how much Sass would appreciate it. He was immensely proud to have taken part in the run for Pete Wilde, even if parts of his bike did fall off on the way!
After the funeral Cha Cha's are putting on a spread so if you want to raise a glass and fall over in Sass' memory please meet there
it was a great night last friday outside the CRB
lots of bikes,people,candles and vodka
written tributes all over the walls
worth a look if the rain hasnt washed them off
DaBouncer 23-06-2005, 12:57 Just wanted to point out to those who knew him (I only met him twice) that there is a tribute to Sass from The Classic Rock Bar on Page 10 of today's Star.
R.I.P Sass.... I didn't know you well but damn you could cook :D
Classic Rock 23-06-2005, 14:44 Sarah CRB (still hi-jackin Buffy's name)
Thanks DaBouncer, had to talk to Martin Dawes bout Sass the other day. How the hell do you describe Sass with words? You had to meet him to get the full on experience, unfortunately there weren't too many anecdotes I could tell him that were suitable for a family paper......
Don't think many people got to see him dressed as a 6' 6" nun intoning the 'Ace of Spades' in the style of the Lords prayer "...and don't forget the jo-o-ker"
Or sat on Clives scooter in the bar asking for 20p so he could have another ride
And as for the time he and phil chopped up six cloves of garlic into an oil burner and left it on a beam in the bar while they went to another pub......
Someone smashed a pool cue across his chest once in the tux, he just looked down at them and said in a deeply resigned voice 'Don't do that'
They're some of the cleaner memories
If anyone else has a kodak moment of the big guy, c'mon...share!
I saw the article in the "Star" and really truly wished i had known this guy. He seemed so nice and genuine.
DaBouncer 23-06-2005, 15:43 Viking, I'm a big fella myself (6ft 3) and Sass even though he was only 3 inch taller seemed to tower above me.
Didn't get to speak to him a whole lot myself, just a "Nice to meet to mate", "top grub this" & "quality bar mate", but you easily got the impression of how genuin and throughly nice bloke he was.
If the funeral is being held at the same place I'm thinking of (according to the star) then it's a great place for the send off. It's a spectacular chapel with some amazing views and extremely peaceful.
There will be a LOT of people who miss Sass, of that I have no doubt.
I met Sass a few times but not properly. I used to love the classic rock bar although we moved away from the estate behind it making it more difficult to just 'go for a quicky'. I remember getting quite drunk in there one night and rolling on to Corp only to bump into Sass. My and my equally drunk friend accosted him and tried to convince him to sell us his CRB t-shirt there and then. He was very nice and pointed out that he didn't intend to be topless in the corp (sensible) but would give us a discount next time we came in.
Never made it back and now we never will.
R.I.P
I will be thinking about Sass and the CRB crew on Thursday.
Will be there on friday in cha chas
DaBouncer 27-06-2005, 07:43 Mods might want to merge this thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45934) with this one

I only just found out about Sass an hour ago. All I can say is sorry...
I'll be there Thursday.
Paul.

littleboo 29-06-2005, 16:39 Sass, what can I say....... he was one of the good ones.
I used to live next door to him over 10 years ago, didn't see him loads after we moved out, but when I did he always had time and a smile for me.
He will be missed
xx
Fianna_Myke 01-07-2005, 00:12 Helluva send off today. Nicked a pillion for the cortege.

Yep, I bet there will be some sore heads today!! Did not go, only had a few conversations with the big man but will be at CRB for the tribute tonight.
MuteWitness 01-07-2005, 09:42 there was loads of bikes, mine included, massive turnout
Plain Talker 01-07-2005, 15:50 i attended, both the crematorium, and at Cha-cha's after. both venues overflowing with folks wanting to say "Cheers, Sass"! amazing!
it was an incredibly moving service, and the song that was played; god! Its lyrics had me in floods...
There's a good write-up in tonight's star, about it, and some pictures.
PT
Classic Rock 01-07-2005, 15:57 The song played was by Tim McGraw and is called 'Live like you were dying'. It will be played a few more times at Cha Chas on Saturday nights over the forthcoming weeks no doubt. It proved very popular.
He said, I was in my early 40's
with alot of life before me
when a moment came that stopped me on a dime
I spent most of the next days
Lookin' at the x-Rays
Talkin' 'bout the option
and talkin' bout sweet time
I asked him when it sank in
that this might really be the real end
How's it hit you
when you get that kinda news, man whatcha do?
CHORUS
-------
He said, I went skydivin'
I went rocky mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Foo Man Chu
and I love deeper
and spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness, I'd been denyin'
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying
-------
he said I was finally the husband
that most the time I wasn't
and I became a friend
a friend would like to have
and all of the sudden going fishing
wasn't such an imposition
and I went three times that year I lost my dad
well, I finally read the good book
and I took a good hard look
at what I'd do if I could do it all again
CHORUS
like tomorrow was a gift
and you got eternity
to think about
what to do with it
what could you do with it
what can I do with it
and what would I do with it
skydivin', I went rocky mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Foo Man Chu
and I love deeper
and spoke sweeter
and I watch an eagle as it was flying,
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying
Live like you were dyin'
Live like you were dyin'
Live like you were dyin'
Live like you were dyin'
noisyandy 04-07-2005, 14:13 It was the acoustic guitar number that got me. I've never cried at a funeral (dunno why) but that brought a huge lump to my throat. A great send-off for a true legend, such a huge crowd showed just how popular and important he was to so many people. I was there representing fcdoguk because we were all hugely grateful for him and Buffy being so supportive of the band.
Let's all support the hunt for CRB mk2. Keep yer eyes peeled for suitable venues!
