Im going into the final year of my degree this year and will be applying for a PGCE very shortly. But before I do that I would just like some info because I dont want any heartbreaking surprises at the last minute that will stop me from doing it, or even doing it then not being allowed to teach.
I used to be a bit of a tearaway in the past before I changed my ways, and decided to do something with my life, and there are still some things which haunt my past which Im hoping wont stop me from doing what I want to do, does anyone know if it will?
To cut a long story short ive got a criminal record in the following areas:
Deception
fraud
Counterfeiting
And various motoring offences
:(
I would think that it will come up on a CRB check (enhanced). I'm not sure what you can do about that.
Ohh Hang on
"When a pre-PGCE student has had a CRB disclosure obtained by the training institution they are to attend, they can undertake their pre-course placements in Schools/Colleges. They must provide written evidence of this disclosure, otherwise the School/College should contact the training institution concerned for written confirmation. Students who do not have this disclosure cannot take up their placements unless they are working under constant supervision."

Cheers thats a decent link
Im just wondering if my type of convictions will be a barrier. Im sure I heard somewhere that it wont be a barrier as the convictions are not convictions which have something to do with kids, eg paedophillia, child harm etc. But I cant be sure.

Those convictions were the type that were screened for in the old vetting procedure, called a 'List 99 check'. An enhanced disclosure will bring up any unspent convictions, cautions, or any relevant information held about you on the Police National Computer. I think (not certain) that prohibitive convictions now include any 'offences against the person', i.e. assault, actual bodily harm etc. so yours may not be a problem.
I think your best bet is to ring up the LEA and ask them. That way, you're anonymous, you get a firm answer, and you're not setting your heart on a career that may not be achievable. I hope it is and good luck
