I was wondering if people in the group on SF ever plan to do any of these? I am relatively new to walking etc but I am a relatively fit person and fancy doing one or both of these this year.

Any comments appreciated.

Hi Paul. There are plans to do the 3 Yorkshire Peaks around April/May time. The other Group leader Neoteric is sorting it out, and will no doubt be starting a thread once he's canvassed regulars in the Group for opinions/interest.

Cool, thanks for the quick reply. I really should come along to a meet really.

You'll be made very welcome if you manage to either get on a walk, or attend a social meet Paul. We're a very democratic group, and ideas are welcomed from everybody who comes on the walks who wants to give some input.
If you check out the January diary you'll be able to see what's happening this month, and choose whatever suits you.

We did the 3 Yorkshire Peaks back in May over a weekend - photos here (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/saulmcintyre/YorkshireDales3Peaks#) - and we all had a fantastic weekend. I think neoteric is planning on doing all 3 in 12 hours which will be for the brave only. Hope to see you on a walk soon

Taxman you made a spelling mistake, barmy doesn't have a 'v' in it. :hihi:

I was going to do it last year, but illness got the better of me. I hope to tackle it this year without a doubt.

So when is the best time to tackle it then? I assume june onwards?

You assume right. Summer would be the best time to do it as the weather should be on your side and you also have the added bonus of having more hours of daylight to play with.

For security, and common sense reasons, I think the plan amongst the SF Walking Group regulars is to arrange to do this challenge`off-forum`, which means making the arrangements privately at the regular meets or on walks.

Thanks scoobz that's correct, I’ve already had quite a few people state their interest in this and will continue to plan details of this challenge whilst out on our regular walks or via email, so if anyone else is interested but is not a regular group walker then best thing is to come on one one of our walks and discuss it. I know that this sort of thing is not everyones "cup of tea" but a number of regulars have said that although they are not up for the full course they will come along to offer help and support maybe just doing 1 peak and helping with pace making, carrying food and water and hopefully cheering (carrying) us over the finish line.

Anyone considering this should not underestimate the task, it's a gruelling 25 mile moorland walk with 3 significant mountains en route and everyone should be fully prepared, fully equipped, carry suitable maps for the area and a fully detailed up-to-date route guide, this walk needs to - and will - be done responsibly and treated with respect.

The walk will probably be sometime in late May early June.

As I didnt get around to this before, I would like to tackle it this time. I will be attending on Sunday and hope to become a regular amongst the group. How I have missed those morning walks.

Hi guys, I am not a member of the group but I did the 3 peaks last June.

My report is here - I suggest it is required reading for anyone thinking about the 3 peaks

Have a look at posts #11 & 12 on this thread Snow Don for an idea of what's happening. To bring you further up to date, the 3 Peaks Challenge will be on the agenda at this months meeting on the 19th if you want to come along and have some input. No thread started yet for the meet, but basic details are in the February diary thread.
Oh, and no you haven't met Paul - none of us have!

Hi, you won't have met up with me on any walks as this is all new to me!

I'm supposed to be going up to the lakes Saturday to do Helvellyn, I can't wait. I just hope that the guys I am with can all get there and we can summit ok and get back down!

The meeting on the 19th sounds like I should come along. I'd like to meet you all and get more of an appreciation for the walk etc. Where is it going to be?

Hi paul28uk,
I do hope you have all the right snow equipment, if you are to tackle Helvellyn this coming weekend. Technically it's not too difficult but you need the right equipment at this time of year. Good luck.

Apparently the weather is ok, but should it not be accessable it's no great loss. tbh I just want to be out and about this weekend. Thanks for the heads up though.

Good luck and don't be complacent, 2 people died walking in the Lake District today. Re the meeting on the 19th, basic details are in the February 2009 diary thread. There will be a seperate thread started for the meet in the next few days.

You might want to keep an eye on this (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/loutdoor/mountainsafety/lakedistrict.html).

I've done both a few times. The National is good but a little too intense - the Yorkshire is better as it's much more leisurely. Usually end up staying in The Crown in Horton for a few Old Peculiar or Theakstons XB!

Did the National starting at Ben Nevis at 3pm. Thanks to quiet roads and a quick car, managed to get to the bottom of Snowdon in 21hr 52mins. Also done it in 24 hours in a minibus, although I found out afterwards that if you're travelling between the mountains in a minibus you should start the clock from the top of Ben Nevis to allow for the slower travelling times. Still satisfying to beat the 24 hour mark though!
