View Full Version : Speed humps on the ring road!
metalman 10-06-2005, 17:39 Since I last went along there, two sets of speed humps have sprung up along Owler Lane between the junction with Firth Park Road (by the shops) and the little roundabout where Page Hall Road joins on. Does this make Sheffield unique in having speed humps on its ring road, or can anyone think of anywhere else that does?
As far as I'm aware, Owler Lane isn't designated as a Ring Road.
metalman 11-06-2005, 08:18 I could be wrong, but I thought it was, or certainly used to be - I'm sure there used to be green R signs along that way out to Meadowhall. Is there a map anywhere showing where Sheffield's official ring road is then?
metalman 11-06-2005, 08:28 I'm not the only one if you read Greybeard's post on this thread:

blademan 11-06-2005, 11:00 That's nothing, they've put a speed bump on my road and I live on a dead end!
I sometimes wonder what goes through their minds when they come up with ideas like these.

What goes through their minds is the request from residents for speed bumps and the result of consultation, usually at public meetings.
If speed bumps are placed down a road and then the residents turn around and say they don't want them. Will they be removed?
I think it was Wordsworth avenue that had speed bumps many years ago and then they got rid of them and now they have speed bumps again.

The Outer Ring Road is the A6102 - broadly Herries Road, Owler Lane, Greenland Road, Prince of Wales Road, Ridgeway Road, Bochum Parkway. Greenhill Parkway is sometime thought of as a sort-of extension of the ring road.

youwhatref 12-06-2005, 10:19 How can Owler lane be classed as a ring road? I always though ring roads were the main arterys throughout any centre or town.
Owler Lane is a smallish road generally with many parked cars parked on double yellow lines outside the row of shops/takeways.
metalman 12-06-2005, 11:17 That was part of my point!
How can Sheffield be classed as one of the major cities of the North when you look at Manchester (orbital motorway) and Leeds (good ring road which is a dual carriageway most of the way round) and all we can offer is... Owler Lane, complete with speed humps. Sheffield, city on the move; the irony is not lost on me.
I think geography might have a tiny bit to do with it - like it would be virtually impossible to build an outer ring road / orbital motorway round the west of Sheffield.
You seem to forget Manchester is virtually flat, and Leeds not far off.
Does the volume of traffic along Owler Bar warrant a dual carriageway - where would the traffic be going from / to?
youwhatref 12-06-2005, 11:57 I think it does warrant a d/c Longcol. I dont think the infrastucture around it would permit though, although many homes along Owler lane are run down.
Most of the traffic would be from the Attercliffe/Meadowhall/M1 end on it's way to the NGH or Hillsborough way.
However without a d/c i feel metalman has a fair point in that a ring road shouldn't really have speed humps. They have quite a few crossings in that area and should really concentrate on stopping those parking on double yellow lines.

Fellow Sheffielders
I suspect that the decision to have speed bumps on Owler Lane is to protect parents and children walking across the road to the school just 10 metres away, rather than being a plot to annoy drivers. See the Owler lane road safety improvements (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36984) thread for more info.
youwhatref makes a good point regarding drivers that stop on double-yellow lines and disrupt the flow of traffic within the entire Fir Vale and Page Hall area, which has been mentioned before on the Fir Vale Masterplan (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20456) thread.
Things are slowly starting to happen. The council has put huge plant pots outside some shops at the Page Hall / Firth Park junction. They look pretty, and they'll prevent vehicles from parking on the pavement. I would like to think these measures will stop the problem, rather than simply move it on elsewhere, but we'll wait and see.
There are also plans to demolish the entire row of shops at the Fir Vale junction and move them further back, allowing an extra access lane for shoppers, with a possible car park behind.
I can't for the life of me see how the new measures are going to help ease congestion in the area, unless (like previous posters have said) something is done about the constant illegal parking at the bottom of Herries Road/Barnsley Road. On Friday evening rush-hour, there were 5 cars/vans all parked on double yellows. However, they all had their hazards flashing, so thats ok :suspect:.
The new traffic calming measures further down Owler Lane have caused traffic to be much heavier and slower, not because of the speed bumps, but due to the idiotically placed islands, and widening of kerbs. Anytime there's a right turner, traffic stops completely, and you get the odd driver mounting the kerb to get past - not so safe for those at the bus stops!
PS - Abdul, isn't there already an access road behind those shops? Or has it been shut due to building works?

Oh no! That's Skinnerthorpe Road, one of the roads that may (hopefully) be demolished.
It's probably the worst road in the area for congestion, especially after they closed off the end by Fir Vale school!
Ah, thanks for the info Abdul... I only ever drive through the area (see I'm causing all the probs!). I'm going to have a look into the whole Masterplan thing now!

My apologies, Metalman. It appears that Owler Lane is designated as a ring road.
You live and learn!
