Does anyone know of any nice places to go to Salsa of a week day evening. Have been going to Cubana on Saturday but I often go away on weekends and need a weekday distraction.

Thanks

I think the Burton Street Project are doing Salsa sessions one evening in the week. You could try them on 0114 233 2908 and ask for Iris.

Under The Boardwalk... Viva Cafe bar on Arundel Gate used to do them... I saw some adverts for somewhere when I was last in Cubana's on Trippett Lane, too

Hi

I am interested in taking up a new hobby in Salsa Dancing. I have noticed there is a Salsa meeting on Tuesday nights, unfortunately I am at college on Monday and Tuesday nights. I am also a complete beginner. Can anyone let me know if there is anymore Salsa classes in Sheffield and how much will it be too?

Thanx.

I believe they do a salsa night on Tuesdays at the Forum on Devonshire Green in Town.

Some of the regulars from here go to that, not sure if they do lessons though.

They do indeed - and I shall even be there tomorrow - Starting from this week there is also a slasa/latin evening in the Fez Club on Thursday evening from 9.00 onwards with lessons provided by the same people who do the Tuesday classes at the Forum :)

The tuesday classes at the Forum is run by some members of the University Salsa Society, so they are in fact pretty much the same people. As is Mas Adelante in the Fez Club.

However, Saturday and Sunday lessons at the University are over for this academic year, lessons there will start up again at the beginning of the next academic year in October.

For more information e-mail:

Does anyone know anywhere that does latin american dancing classes, preferably in the centre or S6/S10 areas of Sheffield? I'm more or less a beginner, having done a bit of salsa & merengue a couple of years ago but being a bit out of practice now!
If anyone else is thinking of starting classes like this and want to go together that'd be cool...I don't mind going on my own but it'd be nice not to be the only beginner!

It's not in S6 or S10 but they do Salsa dancing at the Forum on Division St down Town on a Tuesday night, some of the regulars from here go down nearly every week.

Alternatively, try the dance studio somewhere up Walkley (S6), they might do something like what you're after.

Take your pick ... there are loads of classes in Sheffield.

Tuesdays @ 7.30pm @ the forum on division street.

Thursdays @ 7.45pm @ the polish club on ecclesall road.

Saturday afternoons @ 1.30 (i think) @ cubana on trippet lane.

There are others on other nights ... infact I think there is salsa on every night of the week (and weekend) in sheffield.

DO give it a go though ... it's fun :-)

Am thinking about going to the Salsa thing at the Forum this week, but was wondering if anyone knows if it is OK to go without a partner? Do people go along on their own or am I going to be stood in the corner with no partner all night!?

There's quite a few people who read here that go to Salsa and have for a while...

It can be a bit nerve wracking going for the first time on your tod but if you're not too shy about talking to the different people you end up dancing with (and there will be many) during the lesson part then you should be fine when it comes to the actual social dancing later...

It's all good fun :)

There's all sorts of salsa classes in Sheffield but, if you're after the one most people on the forum know about then, Tuesday evening 7:30pm @ The Forum on Division St.

If you do a search on "Salsa" on here though you should find plenty of information.

I go mmost weeks, should be there tomorrow. Always go on my own, have a nodding acquaintance with a few people, but don't really know anyone that well.

If you just go along at the start (730) for the beginners lesson you'll meet people of your standard and (probably) have a great time.

Hi SarahBee,

It's perfectly OK to go to salsa alone, lots of people do, including me.

If you do go, you won't be stood alone all night. The lessons are structured so that you change partners and get to dance with different people.

I'd recommend it to anyone. Salsa is a lot of fun, and a great way to improve fitness and meet people.

Good luck !!

Might come along some time, but after my long illness lay off I seem to have grown another left foot again!

I need to get a few more lessons under my belt first.

Certainly do...

There is a small company called A Taste of Salsa run by a very friendly group of instructors, who organise various classes from total beginners right through to advanced. My friend and I have been attending their class on Monday night in the town centre for about a year now and we always have a brilliant time. It's a really mixed bunch too, age range 16-80 ish (we're both 22) and you don't need a partner cause everyone swaps round.

To find out more go to www.atasteofsalsa.co.uk where you can email the organisers Nisha and Michelle or get their phone numbers.

Also if you click on the link below it should take you to a feature on A Taste of Salsa published in The Star last November. If the link doesn't work go to The Star's website at www.sheffieldtoday.net and type 'salsa' into their news search engine. The article was called All the Right Moves....

Hi Moongarden.

There's quite a few places you can go in Sheffield ...

As JBee says ... www.atasteofsalsa.co.uk ... is a good place to look and has a section with info on local classes. There are also lessons / social dancing at the forum every Tuesday night (beginners lesson at 7.30). Maybe a good idea to try a few out a few places and see what works for you ... or even go to more than one class a week !!

Good Luck

[edit]

Oh, in Chesterfield, there's a class on Monday nights run by Lee Hunter, website here (www.absolutesalsa.co.uk) ...

Moongarden - I've been wanting to start going to a salsa class, and I was thinking of going to the Tuesday one at the Forum on Division Street. If you'd like, we could maybe join forces and go along together the first time - I don't know about you but I find it a bit daunting going along on my own and being the only beginner when other people know what they're doing!! Or maybe it's just me...
Anyway, if you want to then let me know, if not then that's cool, have fun with whatever class you decide to go to!

Hi Starr (and Moongarden),

There's already a salsa meet being organised, basically, a lot of salsa novices (from here) going to the forum on a Tuseday.

Feel free to join in (if you like) ...

Hi Carmina,

There's not much happening on Fridays on the Sheffield salsa scene ... but ...

There is a class on Thursday's at the polish club on Ecclesall road (just across from nonna's). Beginners class @ 7.30.

There are classs on Saturday afternoons at cubana on trippet lane. Beginners 1.30pm. Improvers 2.45pm. Advanced 4.00pm.

Both are pretty good, and if you can, I'd suggest you try them both. Good luck!

There's also the University of Sheffield Salsa Society lessons that are on a Saturday from 3pm till 5pm on the Foundry level in the student union..

Cost's only £2 to join and you get free session with it...

hi - my mates arent interested in salsa dancing at all - but i did it a few moons ago and really enjoyed it - can one turn up on his lonesome to do it - and partner up with soneone of the opposite sex?! not into the whole dancing with another man thing!

Yep single men are always welcome since there's nearly always more women then men.
Our beginners classes run on a 12 week cycle. This allows us to make sure that everyone in the class progresses as quickly as possible since we're not having to go over old stuff week in week out as new people come along.
We believe this method to be far superior to the normal drop in classes that near all other classes use.
Once a beginners class is 4 or more weeks in it wouldn't be really possible for some one to catch up.
Due to this week only take on new beginners every 12 or so weeks.
Our current beginners class is already 5 weeks in.
Our next class is scheduled to start beginning of Sept.
If you email me your contact details we'll ring a couple of weeks before the class is due to start.
You could also keep an eye on our website because we'll post details in the News section nearer to Sept.

We are in Walkley. It seems most classes are either uni term time, out in the sticks somewhere, or on the other side of the City.

Its really frustrating!

We're only a bus ride away :) Dead easy access from the bus routes into town.

two buses.. one to town, one out again. kinda annoying - too far to walk, too short to ride and no direct service.
