View Full Version : News: Tweenies to Switch on Christmas Lights! Nov 12
BBC TV characters the Tweenies (http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=tweenies) will be switching on Sheffield City's Christmas lights this year. Bella, Milo, Fizz and Jake and their dog Doodles, will also perform a set of songs from the smash-hit Tweenies Live! Show.
(Ed - :loopy: :P - the Tweenies of all people?!)
In addition to the Tweenies, the Hallam FM stage (located in the Peace Gardens) will also play host to a selection top bands, Father Christmas and the Lord Mayor. The event also marks the launch of late night shopping. Festive family fun at this year's event includes children's funfair rides, special market stalls, festive food, bands and carol singing.
The evening kicks off at 6.30pm on Wednesday 12 November.
Thanks Geoff. I know two little people who will think this is fantastic news. Needless to say I'll be there

...host to a selection top bands...Really!? Are they really going to be "top" bands? ;)
Anyone know who's turning on lights in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester for example?
Agent Dan 10-11-2003, 14:54 I take it this is supposed to be for the kids... even when I was a student I would have drawn the line at the tweenies!!! Awful concept - pure sales and marketing and no soul - we even studied their effect on kids at university (in Psycholgoy and marketing!!!)...
'Top' bands like...?
PaulTansley 10-11-2003, 15:01 Christmas is for kids so why not.
I,ll be there with my two little uns.

The Tweenies
What more do you want Oasis? Radiohead?
Probably a few numptys dressed in Tweenies outfits, they are probably switching on lights in several towns and cities on the same night;)
I heard (on the radio) a short list of who was turning on lights in various cities around England - unfortunately I can't remember a single one, but I do remember thinking we were the only city with a kids theme... that's not necessarily a bad thing, just an interesting point.
Agent Dan 10-11-2003, 15:16 I agree that christmas is supposed to be 'for the kids' but everyone gets forced to see all the christmas hype, so why not have a more adult party later on...?
I must admit, though, I am already a little sick/bored of christmas, what with the adverts and repeats of christmas specials on tv and decorations going up well before advent...
Martin_s 10-11-2003, 15:19 I helped organise Xmas lights a few years ago with the same person who does this each year... When we had Bob the Builder and the old 80's sheffield band Human League there to do the lights it was Bob who won out by about 99% outright applause and hysteria..
Never would have believed it, but the kids AND the parents were swamping poor old Bob and we ended up with a few police helping us to manage the mob...
So, no offense but the Xmas lights thing is most definitely for the kids... big and small alike...

Fair enough!! I'll try to steer clear of the stampede! :D

We get Brian Conley. Wanna swap? :)
More details here (http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/news/stories/Detail_LinkStory=70481.html) but they are a bit out of date.

Sickening it is...the only concession to the real reason for celebration a couple of carols very few kids will appreciate the significance of - especially on November the 12th.
In fact I'm surprised we're still allowed to sing carols in public, - guaranteed to offend someone's sense of political correctness.

Just "bumping" this up as it's tonight in case any didn't know :)
Tony Ruscoe 12-11-2003, 12:01 I heard on Hallam FM this morning that Phixx (http://www.phixx.info) are going to be there... (I presume this is one of the "top bands".)
That's right - they're the ones who lost "Pop Stars The Rivals"... not to be confused with "One True Voice" who are THE losers!
:loopy:
Thank's for the link - I hadn't heard of them before now!
What a handsome, talented bunch... :P
Quote from site: "Hold on Me - Out now...!"
What an original sounding song

They played at my school a few weeks ago. I think they are doing some sort of free schools tour.
I've got my avatar ready anyway.

Way ahead of you! Happy Easter everyone!
BAH HUMBUG!
this messed up the rush hour bus service when I was trying to get home from work, this kind of event should start later, and obviously with our Transport Executive being so useless absolutley no warning was made.
And so much for late night shopping, Phones4U was kicking all the customers out when I walked in at 5.45pm. Will have to go back on Saturday afternoon to get my mobile fixed!
Did anyone else take their kids last night? Silly question really, you couldn't bloody move!
We left things late (as usual!) and couldn't get anywhere near the stage. I ended up standing by some railing staring at a bush for 20 minutes, whilst my daughter, who was on my shoulders and could see over the bush, watched the show!
The things we do for our kids!
Well, If the kids enjoyed it then I'm sure it'll all seem worthwhile!
Ravenger 14-11-2003, 12:37 I agree about the lack of info. There was a company meal in town that evening, and didn't realise the bus routes were messed up because of the christmas lights thing. Good thing I went fairly early, otherwise I would have been late due to the bus route detours.

The Lord Mayor's switching on the lights in Leicester. Talk about lame. :loopy:
The Huddersfield Town Centre Manager, the hilariously named "Jacko", what a lad he must be, is turning on the lights in Huddersfield.
I really cant wait.
At least people have heard of the Tweenies, whatever they think of them
I wouldnt know "Jacko" from the ubiquitous Adam, and I shant know if they do a body swap and get some other faceless bloke to press the button instead.
But I think I would notice if the promised five colourful creatures were replaced with traffic wardens, for instance
To quote Life of Brian
"You lucky lucky bast*rds"
Is it just me, or are the Xmas Lights pathetic this year?
Half of them seem to be broken, and the ones that are working are nothing special.
*Twinkle* 22-11-2003, 20:38 Didn't see the switch on.... was at Disney on Ice!!!! :D
I heard from a friend who went, that the Tweenies were switching them on whilst the council workers were still putting them up at the bottom of the moor. Good Planning eh:loopy:

I see no aparrent difference between the illuminations of Matlock Bath and Sheffield Xmas lights.
Lickszz, your avatar is much better than mine :(
But really, our lights should be much better than those in Matlock Bath!
