What specs are your PC mate and what have you got inside the case?

Make sure you got your jumpers setup right on the hdd.

Make sure you aint dislodged your GFX card/CPU Cooler during the install.

just to clarify the hdd is connected through a usb to ide cable so its not connecting directly to my motherboard.
this is powered independently.
hdd is set to slave.apparently it is preformatted to ntfs - should suit my xp.

Whatever your Operating System (~98 to XP) as you plug the USB cable into the back of the PC it should be detected as a removable mass storage device.

what I would recommend you do is install the HD inside as if it was staying there, make sure it's partitionned good, the FAT is all good. Then once you know it's working (booting up Windows and all, copying data onto it), then go forward with the special installation.
I would try all 3 appropriate Jumper settings (Cable Select, Master, Slave, NOT alternate capacity) then test the new setup.

Are you trying this on a USB2 port? I have a couple of external USB IDE connectors and one of them (a drive caddy) loses the USB connection at random intervals. This only happens on USB2 though.

I have a different usb-ide adaptor (from www.directusbstore.co.uk) and that works perfectly.

My external kits tell me to set the HDD to 'master'.

Deos the external hard disk have a power adaptor?

IMPORTANT: CHANGE THE JUMPER TO MASTER.

If its a hitachi it is a 'deathstar' previously IBM, not a reliable disk! Send it back!

No so, only the 75gxp's were deathstars, but the whole brand got tagged with this, and the newer hitachi disks are pretty good. :)

Although maxtor seem to be letting their standards drop, I've had 3 fail in the past 6 months

i used to work in a returns department at Tekheads, maxtors have quickly dropped off my "favourites" list. the amount we had back...

Seagate and WD are the leaders at the minute.

Hitachi, since the 75's have been fine.
