View Full Version : Mel sterlands book
bladebloke 04-01-2009, 17:53 did any of you wendys get this book from santa. just wondered what you thought to it. just read this review from a leeds fan.
Save yourselves 18 quid lads, don't bother buying Mel Sterlands book. I went to the signing at Borders before christmas and had a chat with old 'Zico', he seemed like a decent bloke and we laughed about the good old days in Mr. Craigs and Sunset and Vine. Despite him being a wendy fan I coughed up my hard earned cash (well, the mother in laws pension. it was a xmas present) on Boozing,Betting and Brawling which fair play to him he signed. I'm no brain of Britain but I've just finished it in two 2 hour sittings, the 200 pages of large type drivel was like reading an old 'o' level english essay where you were just trying to fill pages and get to the end AND Melvin in the year we won the title we beat Villa 4-1 at Villa Park not 4-2 AND the replayed match against Stuttgart was at the Nou Camp NOT the San Siro. As a Leeds and Rangers fan I loved Mel when he played for them and i'll never forget his pile-driver against scum when 4 of us couldn't hold it in any longer and had to jump the fence out of the strettford paddock but 18 smash is a f****** joke. Also admitting that if anyone sends a photo for you to sign you don't bother and keep them in case they end up on ebay is a ***** trick, guess where your ******** book is going for £18 'buy it now'!!!! Saying that i've just told you all not to buy it so who's the **** me or him?
your views lads and lasses.

But aside from all that, what did he really think of the book :hihi::hihi::hihi:
bladebloke 05-01-2009, 12:27 does'nt seem that the wendy's were bothered about it either.
Ousetunes 05-01-2009, 12:33 He was in my local a few months back.
By golly, this chap is very rotund, he clearly likes a pint.
In fact, I thought he looked a bit like a Weeble.
But yes, he was a top player (and that's from a Blade).
Bladebloke ask yourself this; Would you ever act on a recommendation from a Leeds fan ? Presumably not!
I read the book a while ago.
Indeed there are a few factual inaccuracies in it, not least I suspect in a chapter relating to some post office property! But even the Sky Sports (prev. Rothmans) Year Book (regarded as the football bible) is not immune from factual errors.
I suspect the Leeds fan may have skipped over the chapters relating to Mel’s career before he went there, hence a four hour read sounds about right.
I found it an amusing and interesting read.
Admittedly, the chapters giving details of his injuries, are not recommended reading material whilst sitting in a hospital waiting room, awaiting the results of tests deciding whether a surgeon needs to stick a knife in you. I formed such an opinion some years ago, having erroneously chosen “First day of the Somme” to read whilst on such a venture.
Even non Wednesdayites should find the tales of his life as a race horse owner amusing, as well as the one where he personally was removed from the Hillsborough treatment table, in order to allow Terry Curran and Andy McCulloch’s lame greyhound to be treated on it, because it was due to run at Owlerton that night!
You may find the details of his relationship with the Blades in his family, and friendship with Simon Treacy an eye opener, in how well they get on
May I suggest that you ask him nicely if you can join Imre Varadi and him for a curry down London Road, if you have not had the experience already.
blunyts just a grumpy old man

i dont consider 48 as old. but i admit i can be a tad grumpy at times. united losing often leaves me staring in a grumpy mood into my pint 5 minutes after the final whistle in the railway on bramall lane. i get home in a grumpy mood several hours later with the mrs in a mood which makes me grumpier. the kids use the house as an hotel for them and their pals which also makes me grumpy. i grump at them for leaving tv's and other electrical items on unattended in their rooms. i'm grumpy on a cold monday morning when i have to get up and go to work to pay for these said items. i'm grumpy when the phone bill comes in at 200 quid a go from my little angels ringing mobiles despite being grumply told 10 times a day not to. but to use their mobiles i grumply bought them at 200 quid a go. so all in all yep your right i'm grumpy but when i sit down at the pc and read your input after a hard day. it puts the grumpyness to one side i smile and thank sweet jesus i'm not a ****.

Michael_W 07-01-2009, 22:07 Well what a pointless thread, sorry bladebloke but trying to make up for your lost time on here with drivel like this makes you look obsessed and bitter. You post a negative review from a Leeds fan on Mel Sterlands book and ask for opinions without giving your own, why ?
Mel was a good player, born and bred in Sheffield, made a living out of the game without amassing a fortune. Like many professional footballers he writes a book to make a few quid, nothing wrong with that, it will never be a best seller or a classic, but a light entertaining read for anyone interested.
So if Tony Currie wrote a book and I had not read it, but came across a negative review from some anonymous person would I care ? NO and I certainly would not feel the need to post about it on here :suspect:

calm down micky love... why reply to a pointless thread... me thinks you is the obsessed one.
i'm asking for opinions cos i was thinking of buying it our lass's step dad for his birthday next month as he is a pig. came across the leeds lads review so asked on here for other opinions. think i'll play safe and stick a tenner in his card instead. is that ok with you micky love.

Mean bugger. Buy him the book.
You should get a discount on it by now somewhere if you shop around :)
I'm sure he'll let you read it when he has finished it.
(But, as I have previously posted the best book I've ever bought for a tenner, was "Keeper of Dreams" by Ronald Reng, a slightly dated by now but still fascinating insight into German goalkeeper Lars Leese's season in the premiership with Barnsley, and his acceptance by the local townfolk, something not given to Georgi Hristov).

A dark day in our club's history indeed.
Has he read Keith Farnsworth's book on Derek Dooley (the early chapters of which are still painful for me to read, as my old man (deceased) played in the same YMCA team as the great man when they were both in their youth.)
Alternatively, you may wish to get him
When the Whistle Blows: The Story of the Footballers' Battalion in the Great War

to remind him what everyone else was doing, whilst United were lifting up the FA Cup !
Back to the original post; Mel's book is not a classis but well worth a read for entertainment value and a good honest view of life at club level ( if perhaps not a different venture).

oright mate. my dad was captain of a side dooley played in in his early days in pitsmoor. might be the same side your dad played in. my old man told me he picked the side and once left dooley out. dooley called him a bas*ard and walked out. years later 77/78 i was a lottery agent for united. i gave my mum and dad my tkts for the christmas dinner as i was a bit of a punk so thought chicken in a basket was'nt the done thing. anyway i digress. dooley recognised my dad and went straight over to him to shake his hand and apologised to him. says they had a good old natter about football in pitsmoor in the 50's leaving my mum to her gin and chicken.

It wasn't your Dad seeking revenge, that put Matt Sheppard up to sacking him that Christmas then, was it? :)
I'll dig out the book, and look at names of Pitsmoor teams he played for, to see if any ring a bell, but as far as I am aware my father only knew him as part of the YMCA team ( based in Fargate) under a previous Sheffield legend named Pop Bennett , who was a father figure to many young lads in those wartime years. They played their matches at Crimicar Lane. There are some threads in the history & expat section relating to such)
Many I time I stood in the Hillsborough development office as a kid when Derek Dooley was still in charge of that, listening them chatting. Wish I'd used a tape recorder.
Have a good weekend.... but not too good.

;)
My only advise to you.
Get us much information out of your Dad, whilst he is still alive and communicative.
(Because you can't afterwards, and you will probably find there are a lot of things you would have liked to have asked him about.)
Going to Ipswich expecting to get nowt... ...apart from a few decent pints of Adnams !
Anything obtained between 15:00 and 16:55 , is a bonus.
That way we don't come home disappointed.
And, getting back to the subject of the original post; Derek Dooley and Mel Sterland, although born 35 years apart are very much of the same ilk.
Hundred percent commited, good honest local lads who made the grade and good; both whose careers were sadly cut short by injury, and who should have achieved much more in the game.
Wouldn't have seen them falling over at the slightest touch, like thos eover paid premier league wufters in Fulham shirts last Saturday.
