Earlier tonight I was doing some gardening, which went on for far longer than I would have wished and was deadly boring. My heart leapt however, when I spotted a butterfly/moth of a kind I have never clapped eyes on before. I was strimming at the time, but it managed to skip out of the way, so it must have good reflexes (I mention this as it may help identify the beast; some butterflies/moths could be very slow witted and easily dessicated by a strimmer, for all I know).

It was quite small, about two-thirds the size of a Cabbage White and had dark grey wings, complete with a few blotches in a lovely shade of red. I managed to get it on the end of my finger, where it sat quite happily twitching it's proboscis. Then it flew away.

I would like to know what kind of butterfly/moth it was. I felt sad when it had gone, because it was nice. I have since had two very large gin and tonics, however, and no longer feel quite so sad. Just wistful........

Could be a cinnabar moth LordSnooty.

Google 'British moths' and go to page 5 for a photo.

I have checked it out on Google, and it was indeed a Cinnabar Moth. Thanks Red, you're a gent.
