I mean those huge steel plant containers squat at the top of Fargate, like tanks only harder to remove. Who's charmless idea were they? :gag: How much longer can they get away with it? What other space wasting eyesores are they planning?

They should be prosecuted....

are they the ones with mirrors sticking out of the sides? they're hideous, and, somehow just appeared one day! i like the idea of a statue of a famous sheffield person. what about crazy horse himself?

I like the idea of having some kind of a fountain ...

It may be extreme and a waste of bad veg, but replacing the tanks with a couple of medieval stocks, suitably occupied with tank commanders (ie. SCC planners) would pull in a regular crowd...thus regenerating city centre trade....

Love the comment about Jan Wilson.

Sheffield always just seems to agree on designs which are never very inspiring like those pointless containers mentioned.

Its like the new buildings that are shooting up around the city, non of them are particulary interesting to look at whereas cities like Leeds and Manchester choose designs that make statements which in return make the town centres more distinctive.

An example which comes to mind is the new building for Sheffield University next to the old Jessop's Hospital. Its rectangular and has some green glass panels! (Woohoo)

Sorry, but I just can't quite agree with that. I love the look of the winter gardens and the new bus interchange looks half decent, although past that I am struggling to think of a new building I like the look of.

Blademan I completely agree, the Winter Garden is an excellent addition to Sheffield but feel we need more inspiring designs like these.
The new MacDonald Hotel from the artist impressions I have seen looks interesting also but just a shame that it now blocks the view of the Winter Gardens when looking from the Peace Gardens.

Have just read from looking at the Living in Sheffield pages that there is a possiblity that the Cala Eclipse project on St Mary's Gate is to be cancelled. This would be a shame as from a design point of view was different for the city but the site was never ideal for residential development on one of the most congested roads in Sheffield.
An example of what I mean by the same old boring design is the proposed Hanover House development on what used to be Lancaster Europa/ Arctic Spa, opposite the site of Cala Eclipse. This in my opinion is just another uninteresting building that could be found in any town or city in the UK which in 10 years time will look dated with no one wanting to move there.
