Lol, firstly that's a little wrong, but fair enough you're troubleshooting. Secondly, dumb on their part. The majority of people with unprotected WiFi connections doesn't seem to amaze me.

Anyhow, your problem. Let's suppose everything is alright on Virgin's end - the line is fully operational.

Your PC (I'm guessing a version of Vista?) connects to a WiFi signal in the area, but not the NETGEAR's.

Question: Is the NETGEAR fully connected physically?

Make sure all the cables are where they should be before everything else. And use the CAT5E cable (Ethernet) to connect you to the internet before attempting to use the WiFi. Why? Because if the connection is fine physically it should be fine on the radio waves. Also, the router will be on factory settings too which means no security, and you can only set that up via configuring over the ethernet cable. Do you really want someone to use your connection like you have your neighbours?...

A lady had a similar problem she found that disabling the routers WIFI protection allowed her to connect you could try this first then take it from there trying to get the protection working if thats the fault.

if you go back into your router setup page then look for the wireless password this will then hopefully allow you on - if not then we need to change the type of security its using - not all wireless card support all type of encryption

i have connected via an unsecured network that someone has left open lol but dont understand why i can not connect to my own connection i put the password in but it still says pending

It maybe due to the type of encryption your router is using - try using a different type in the router settings. WEP / WPA etc

Its likely that the computer needs updating, connect it directly to your router using a cable first, and run the updater, I know that the EEE 701's had issues with WPA2 and WPA/PSK WiFi encryption, which is resolved after updating, this is why you can A) connect to an unsecured network, and why B) it asks for your password, but won't accept it.
