They have reclaimed an offensive word for themselves. Similarly, some gay guys describe themselves as queer, which is another reclaimed offensive word. The subtle difference is that whereas gay people can choose to describe themselves with any words they choose, generally speaking, such words are usually used in a derogatory or offensive way by other people, e.g., the post by floyd77. My main reason for starting the thread (apart from boredom) was to test the theory that 90% of people are stright and 10% gay. I also deliberately included a couple of other options. I think the latest poll results show that a large majority are hetrosexual although not as high as 90%. But the truth is, you KNOW who the gay people are on the thread, you have an idea in your head of who's going to reply and what percentage they make up, and therefore is it really necessary? Is your poll really going to be as acurate as something you've read, that was obviously carried out by statisticians on a bigger scale than yours? There's a world of difference between that, and your mates calling you one. That is the point that RedRobbo is making about the word being reclaimed.
