As part of their Picture of Britain series, last night (Wednesday 8th June) the BBC ran a number of local programmes celebrating the country. Here in Stoke (a city most famous for a fat darts player, a fat pub singer made good, some pottery and a population who like to vote for far right parties - quite difficult to pack that into a light hearted magazine programme) we were treated to the poet Benjamin Zephaniah's recollection of growing up in Birmingham. And very enjoyable it was too.
Naturally, my thoughts drifted back to the city I call home. Who, I wondered, would the BBC call upon to wax lyrical about Sheffield. Michael Palin? Jarvis Cocker? Then it occured to me. There would be no such programme. At worse you all watched A Picture of Leeds and at best you probably got some fudge like A Picture of the North or A Picture of Yorkshire (made by BBC Leeds and with a suspiciously North and West Riding bias). I daren't ask which it was. No doubt there was A Picture of... made for Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle. I daren't ask and I daren't look at the BBC website to find out. There's one thing curmudgeons like me don't need, and that's having our suspicions confirmed.
Welcome to Sheffield: Stealth City. Invisible to all.
