just phone sky and tell then you want to cancell your subscription as your box its dead and you cant afford to buy new one and keep the subscription, they will offer you a discount, just say NO you want to cancell they will give it to you for free
Intermittent recording failures are normal operation for the Sky+ boxes I've had. The thing that can make the biggest difference to it turning off randomly is keeping it cool. The best way to do that is have nothing at all on top of it and no other electrical device e.g. amplifier underneath it. And certainly not have it in a confined space like an enclosed equipment cabinet in a TV stand.
If it's adequately vented and still goes on the blink, I'd give Sky a call and do the threatening to cancel thing.
Just remember that they may call your bluff... I've worked for Sky before, in a technical team (not cancellations) and had a fair few customers complain when I've actually cancelled the account (because that's what they'd asked for!) instead of giving them something free.
edited to add: I didn't work with the TV side of things, so I don't know about that... have you rung up? a forced software download to the box may fix it without requiring a service call...

If you go to services then sky+ setup then scroll down to where it says auto stand by and if its on press your right arrow on sky remote and it should turn it off then go down to save new settings.
