View Full Version : Babies and Medised...would you?

Hmmm...my little one is now 16 weeks old - it goes so fast! - and he has a nasty cold that has him all bunged up. He's snuffly and rattly and snot-ridden, and it is affecting his sleep, all the coughing, etc. (he has no fever and is happy in himself, so I would rather not drag him to the doctor and expose him to flu and norovirus, etc unless it gets worse). I am spreading Snufflebabe on nearby bits of fabric and using a humidifier to help relieve the symptoms.
To complicate matters, he has started teething in earnest today...red cheeks, drool, crankiness...

I only discovered Medised recently, after getting it for my 3 year old, and it says it will help children from 3 months by clearing up snot, etc. and giving pain relief. My possibly rather paranoid worry is: the stuff that helps clear the snot makes them drowsy, and I am worried it will stop him coughing when necessary and he might choke.
Am I being completely freakish about this? I'm having a really poo, emotional day, and can't tell if it's a rational concern or a tired, overwrought one.

Any experience? Thank you!

coughing is a reflex he has no control over so he will be ok. Medised is great, we reccomend it at the pharmacy as it helps them sleep. we advise only to use it in the night rather than the day.

Thanks for that, Savbaby. It makes sense that coughing would be an involuntary reflex...I have a cough at the mo, and could no more hold it in than stop blinking. My poor little mooch, I just took the bottle up but he's just fallen aleep after an hour of screaming, so it'll have to wait for if he wakes up with it in the night.

I thought I was being a little odd, but today has been a difficult one. Thanks, again

Thanks, guys. I wish I'd known about Medised when Cosywolf was younger. I feel like I've missed out on a very useful tool for my parent toolkit all this time...

Aggggghhhhh!

MEDISED! If I'd have only known 3 weeks ago! :hihi:

Must remember that one!

Lewis now has two teeth since that dreaded cold!

Unfortunately Medised didn't work for us - it didn't make either of mine drowsey ...quite the opposite and very hyper. Piriton had the same effect when they had chickenpox  It does work really well for most people though.

Medised doesn't make Scarlett sleep either, nor does calpol anymore.

Also I have to add that although the bottle of Medised says it can be used from 3 months recently regulations have changed so it cannot be sold for use in children under 2yrs this is due to it containing antihistamine which the under two's can no longer have.

I did however ring medised to discuss this and they said that they have to ask for sales from now on but even though the formula is the same as always and is perfectly safe for babies 3 months and above the cannot sell it for this age group.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

its always been a P item and had to be asked for. It can only be sold in premises with a pharmacist and a pharmacist must oversee the sale.

Whats a P item? sorry for being dumb.

You do have to ask for it and if you say it's for a child under two they wont sell it to you (due to the change in regs)

sorry your not being dumb i was, forgot to put what a P item is. If you look at you medicines some have POM (prescription only) or P (pharmacy only) some say GSL (general sales) although not all GSL items actually say it on it!.

I knew something happened with medised but i have been off on maternity so no doubt will have lots to learn when i go back:(

Hi - I've used it without problems - just check the age out and don't forget IT CONTAINS PARACETOMOL so no doubling up with Calpol. I'm probably stating the obvious but best to be on the safe side. Check the age on it too.

Doctor at Childrens hospital said okay to use and my GP said to steer clear as the thing (sorry -don't know the name of the chemical) that makes them drowsy can have bizarre effects (like hallucinating!!!). Just shows how 2 professionals can have differing opinions and experiences.

As I said, my boy was fine with it but to be honest its not a miracle cure when they are so ill. Just your TLC and plenty of fluids is the miracle cure.... xx Take care.

I bought it for Cosycub, but he wasn't with me, and they never asked. The bottles still state fine for 3 months and above, and I think if they were very serious, they'd recall them, surely?
How odd.

Well, I've only used it once and it seemed to have no ill effects. Right, I'm off to do some research...

It's down to people over dosing their babies by giving it with other medicines containing anti-histamines and/or paracetamol. MHRA say it is perfectly safe, if taken on it's own and according to instructions, but that, well, we are all too stupid to be trusted to do that.

Tbh, if i feel it will help Wolfcub more than Calpol for specific things, I will give it to him. If I think Calpol is more suitable, I will give that to him.
Until Calpol is banned because a minority of people accidentaly/ignorantly double up on paracetamol medications.

I am concerned that they will be putting more children at risk by doing this, because many parents are aware that Medised is not dangerous in itself and will still use it for children under 2, but will not have the benefit of the correct dosage instructions.
I have also read some of the hysteria and misinformation going around on various forums regarding this.

And there we are in our nanny state once again, unable to do anything for ourselves.

I bought medised yesterday (it's fab stuff!) for my 3 year old and was told by the chemist that it SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO CHILDREN UNDER 2 YEARS. (It does say 3 months on the bottle)
