(This thread is for my parents).
I downloaded Spybot for them, not long after they couldn't get the dial up connection to tiscali. They are worried it was connected to Spybot and un-installed it.
They still can't connect and have now also lost a game they like. They have spent ages on the phone (50pmin) to provider to no avail. They are now not on the net, any ideas? I didn't think it would be Spybot's fault maybe coincidence.

spy bot would only have removed rogue dialer's they could have been using one by accident instead of there Tiscali connection.

Without considerably more information, I don't think anyone will be able to help;).

I don't think SB is responsible for the disappearing game (unless the "game" concerned is a known mal/scum/spyware component - or contains such).

As a final (for now) thought, have you tried re-installing the modem drivers (or tried a different modem - I had one fry during a thunder storm a few years back)?

Make sure that all the basics steps have been taken first.

Is there a "Network Connection" configured for the internet?
Are all the settings in that "connection" correct? Account name/password/dial-up number etc.

Is the modem connected properly?
Is the modem working?

Is the connection dialling out?

Are there any error messages coming up?

Maybe there was a rogue dialler in use that was also giving 'net access and Spybot has detected and deleted it?

I'd recommend a quick call to your phone provider to check recent call activity.

As the others have pointed out it's a bit difficult to provide any solutions without more info so you need to address that first..

However, if Spybot is connected then, as various people have already surmised, it's probably because there was a piece of spyware and/or malware on the system...

The "game they liked" sounds somewhat suspect as that's often where spyware gets in, as many parents often find out the hard way...

If you're using win98 then the lspfix utility should provide the fix and get you back up and running.

However, if it's any other Operating system you're going to have problems for a while...

Bottom line though, Spybot is better ON your system than off it... Or at least some form of protection to replace it should be considered.
